Omg. This is impressive. Yeah. Bắc means North. Giang is a Chinese Vietnamese word for River. So I guess the name is the river in the north.
@@PickUpVietnamese Thanks! I was learning the Vietnamese provinces every day during the holidays! I actually found most of the meanings from Google translate 😅
@@Elfin1993 That was amazing. Keep going.
Can anybody tell me the etymology/meaning of the provinces in English?
Basically it is just area of land, a part of a country that is not near a large city. It's quite similar to a state or a county.
@@PickUpVietnamese Oh I meant what each Vietnamese province's name means in English ☺
@@Elfin1993 Oh. Haha.
Interesting. I never thought of it. Most of the names are fancy words/ Chinese Vietnamese. Some of them are pure Vietnamese.
There's a story behind every name I guess but I dont know all of them. For example, Ho Chi Minh city aka. Sai Gon has a story. "Sài" is an outdated word for "land". "Gòn" means cotton. When Vietnam was the France's colony, they forced us to grow cotton for them but any other plants for food. So we start to call the place " the land of cotton".
@@PickUpVietnamese That is even more interesting than a literal translation.
Hello Christina, I was wondering what the common words in Vietnamese provinces/cities actually mean, especially the following words:
Giang
Ninh
Binh
Đinh
Vinh
Long
Đồng
An
etc I tried to google translate it, but it wasn't much help. Thanks for your help!
Most of these words are Sino-Vietnamese words which means they're Chinese borrowed words. I do believe they all mean something in Chinese, but the most common that are translated into Vietnamese and also the ones that I understand include Giang (river), Bình (peace, average), Long (dragon), An (peaceful), Đồng (together, bronze).
Your pronunciation is different from those in the north.
Yeah. I speak Viet with southern accent. I was born and raised in the south of Vietnam.
