This time he thought he finally got the part he had wanted + had more lines = screentime to show off his skills (it is a survival show after all). From his perspective he is repeatedly losing out on the parts he wants because there is always someone who is better - that has to be upsetting.

I honetly don't think it was an editing issue at all. It seems like a genuine thing - I mean uptil then Mathew had been losing the parts he wanted to others, and the one time he got it (and he was so happy), it also gets taken away. It does carry that undertone of "you are not good enough for the important parts" and that has to be a major blw.
