I just brought my first photography light and I thought to myself "surely you dont just put the sand straight into the bag?" so i looked up how to do it and came here! Thanks
Zip lock type bags are a must. I like to use quart size freezer bags with pea gravel instead of sand. An alternative is to use 4 20oz Gatorade bottles filled with water..
I have been doing that for years, it definitely works. Also use "play sand" instead of masonry sand. Play sand is sifted, so that it has less dust, it often ships in plastic bags with some moisture, so that when you transfer it into a new bag, the transfer process is less dusty.
Thanks for your comment, Michael. On occasion I rent studio space for other types of shoots, and I'm usually blow away when I grab a sandbag at another studio and dust pops out when you set it down. Pretty crazy. Thanks again for your comment. Cheers.
I use #8 lead shot in a zip lock bag. (You can buy at a hunting store ie, Fin Feather and Fur.) I divide the weight into 2-3 bags per each side. I have a kitchen weight scale to measure the amount of weight for the bags. I now know the exact weight for each bag.
Thanks for the idea with the plastic bags I'm going to fill them with t gravel and use them in my little pool for my duck because its a lottle challenging for him to get out of the pool on his own that easy and when he's ready to get out I'm just going to put it down where he could step on the little handmade sandbag that's something on the bottom 🙂

How many sandbags (gallon wise I guess lol) should I use for an outdoor event where I tie a projector screen onto a photo backdrop?
Or fun tip:
To to dollar tree and buy the decorative rocks and stones and that works
How much sand does gallon hold in weight?
Hi Judy. Not sure about the weight, sorry, but the gallon ziplock when fully loaded fills up the zipper pouch of the sandbag completely.
Around 7.5 lbs
Pro tip: Use 2 instead of 1 zip-lock bag for extra safety.
