Curtis Leach, who co-wrote this song with Billy Gray, was killed by a home invasion robber when he was only 37 years old. He had just moved from L.A. area to the Dallas Area and had recently finished an album for Dewey Groom's Texas based Longhorn records. A tremendous personal loss which overshadows the great loss to country music also. Curtis wrote great songs and surely would have had a long and prominent career as a performer as well as a writer. At the time of his death only 20 recordings by him existed.
One of the greatest songs ever recorded by one of the greatest singers that ever recorded a song. Several years ago BIll gave me the Golden Guitar. I still have it today.
Mid 60's the first time I heard. Always been my favorite of Bill's. I've played and sang this song many times. I was talking to Bill at the Opry back in the 80's. I ask him if he wrote it, he said he wish he had. He told me someone else wrote it, I ask reckon it's a true story? Said he didn't know. But we agreed that it sure sounds like it could be.
one of my favorite songs, I grew up listening to this song. This is the type of country I enjoy. The country they have now days in my opinion is not country. The "old country" is a lot better. Bill Anderson, George Jones, Johnny Cash, and the list goes on
yeah me too. But I like this old style country music I like to coin "hard country" (like some into rock music like hard rock or metal rock). The "country" music on the radio today is not country music I was brought up on.
Very beautiful amazing voice and song just love all of your songs perfect I have been a fan of yours for years just your voice singing you are just amazing thanks Bill for all of your beautiful amazing songs
@Bill Anderson Thanks for the reply! Ive been a fan for roughly 15 years. My dad and his friend which have both passed on now would play "golden guitar" every time they got together . First song I recall hearing, but it was actually some years later before I heard to real song.
I worked with Dalton Fuller for many years. He is by far the only brother I ever had. No relation though. I can't praise him enough. God Bles and keep up the good work.

The pedal steel guitar on this track is played by the unmistakable sound of the legendary PETE DRAKE.
