WOW!!! I've watched several comparison vids with the 70/80, and this is the ONLY one that it doesn't sound like it's made of tin foil- so confused now, it sounds killer here!
Compulsor I'm very glad you liked it! and even more that you took the time to say something nice, something not that common in our times so hi five for that! As for the speakers, if you are interested in giving them a spin, don't worry, you can't go wrong with them. In real life they don't sound like tin foil at all! and once you get a little practice with mic positioning (maybe you already have it), they are a great sounding choice! They are a little "dimmer" than the V30s, but it's precisely for that reason that they are excellent for recording, you get no fizz, and alI the beefy mids and low end. Anyway, that's just my opinion :)
well, maybe it's better this way? There are many things I've found to be wonderful that, thanks to "group think" can be had for substantially less than their intrinsic value, i.e.: Silverface-era Fender amps, the "Red Knob" Fender "The Twin", etc etc. Anyway, keep up the good work!
@@chucktalley6110 One thing I found from speakers is that sure they play the biggest factor in your tone, but I didn't like the Blackbird I have till yesturday prior to using a quad of Electro Harmonics EL34 power tubes. Ther are so many other factors like preamp, pickup, amp and that really play huge roles for whether or not any paticular speaker will sound good.
Great video, thanks so much for making/sharing it with everyone. I picked up a Seventy 80 ridiculously cheap (like thirty bucks new!) on special a couple years ago to "hold me over" till I could get a "real" speaker for my vintage Deluxe Reverb: I never looked for a replacement. As unlikely as it may seem, it does a KILLER job in that role: wonderful Fender cleans all day, and the PERFECT pedal platform. It's so perfectly neutral where it needs to be, and has very crisp balance when cleans or articulate drive segments are called for. It's really a great little speaker, I know it gets pounded a lot by tone-snobs, but I've got plenty of high-dollar rigs with UK made V30's and Greenbacks, have had wide range of other highly hyped speakers, and while many are very good to great as well, there's nothing they have over these- in the right application.
Thats exactly what I think mate! it's all a matter of perspective. Like if you want to cut through the mix in a small rehearsal room, sure, the V30's kick ass, put for a controlled recording environment, the Seventy/80's are perfectly fine, and they are actually delightful to mix in post prod! thanks for your comment!!
For this CHUGGA CHUGGA power chord stuff, the Celestion punches out more. For Al Di Meola type chops on the neck pickup, the Blackstar might be better.
Great demo! Enjoyed your playing. Seventy 80 is definitely a nicer fuller speaker. Was looking for a speaker for my THR100HD and the Seventy80 should do nicely without hurting the wallet. Thanks!
Awesome mate! there is definitely no need to break wallets to get a good sound, it's more about honing skills actually (not that mine are that honed lol). Seventy/80's are actually very easy to mix in a song, as their response is very natural, so check them out confidently!
I put a 70/80 with an Eminence in a 2x12 and they match so well it is unbelievable. Guys with Mesas were asking how I was getting such a sound. I just lucked out. They complement each other to create a massive monster tone in all areas. They destroy my Marshall Cabinet with Legend Eminence speakers. Embarassing. Can't put them in the Marshall cab due to the ohms. So, I record with my home made birch cab with the combo I mentioned. Need to get an EQ for the Marshall so I can use it at gigs.
Mr.@Hate Factory, you are actually right and thank you for listening. I guess I was just aiming for the guitar sound comparison, and not really a mix comparison, that's why I just cooked a quick Drum line just to feel the flavor. But for best results, a Bass would have been great. Maybe I'll ask a buddy to record something and add it! Cheers! :)
Nice no bullshit comparison. Yes, that panning technique you use is very good indeed. Now about your playing. Sloppy? What? you rocked dude. Don't belittle yourself lol
Enrique Correa Glad you liked it dude! and I actually share your opinion, I like the Seventy/80's better too! Though I wanted to make the shootout for reference, hoping that it could help someone in doubt. Cheers and thank you for listening! :)
I have to say the 70/80 has a fuller sound. The Blackbird 50 is a bit muddy, IMO. I'm looking at a pair of these on CL for $40.00 which is what brought me here in the first place. Thanks for the vid!
So this recording sounds like it is in Stereo and both do sound good to me. I like the playing and the style. Can you tell me your recording method on how you separate the channel to give it the stereo effect? Thanks
Hi! it's dubbed, meaning I played each track twice, and panned one playthrough fully to R and the other fully to L. And I only used 1 mic per track. If you have further questions just ask away! Cheers.
The dude doesn't know how to compare speakers. He compared two very diifferent cabinets. Per his note: - Blackstar HT112 loaded with Blackstar Blackbird 12'' speaker - Laney GS212IE loaded with Celestion Seventy 80 speakers
Hi, I know that cabinets make a difference in sound, but that difference is mainly appreciated from certain distance. You notice it (and can be quite a lot) when you are in a room playing, but when you mic the speakers as close as I did with this review the effect that the cabinet has in the final sound is almost nothing. So is it perfect? no, but it is very close and will definitely give you an idea about the sounds.
@@magicdjinn internal cabinet dimensions (as well as closed v open back) make a noticeable difference in how a speaker performs... if i took my closed back 1x12 with a peavey blue marvel (might as well keep the speakers that get some unfair hate theme going) and modified it into an open back i would change the sound... put the same speaker in a 2x12 and again the sound changes... put it in a 4x12 and the sound again is affected... the differences won't be as drastic as using a completely different speaker but somewhere in all this you find that in some configurations the speaker sounds better than in others personally i think most of the 70 80 hate comes from the fact that it doesn't have the blanket over the highs that the people who jizz in their pants at the sight of a vintage 30 seem to want... plus the 70 80 being modestly priced and often used as a stock speaker earns it that weird "ew cheap stock speaker" instant hate from idiots (if they want a cheap 12" celestion to hate on they should look at the rocket 50... that one is crap)
@@magicdjinn Still I agree with guitar player it still makes a lots difference I have blackstar mkii 20 with the blackstar 50 watts speaker sounds great I try it with the avatar helltone 60 watts which is a vintage 30 the stock speakers sounded way better. I also have a G12 vintage 30 8 ohms I will test that but if you ask me I don't think it be much differ
How old is the Seventy 80? in this video? It sounds way better than mine. I have a Marshall MX212AR cab with a DSL20HR, and the speakers have no warmth whatsoever and sound brittle and sterile compared to yours in this video. I hope it's just an issue of breaking in the speaker, because right now I want to send it back. That Laney IRT amp sounds great!
Hi Tim! That's very odd, Seventy 80s are quite warm, many people actually dislike them precisely for that. However, the speakers were about a year and a half old when I recorded this, so it could be an issue with breaking down the material. Have you recorded them? It could be useful to isolate the effect of the Cab + Room from the speaker itself. If miked closely, the cab should give you it's most "unadulterated" sound. Keep me posted!
+lijian1982 Agreed. It has a more "analogue" sound to it. The blackbird is specifically voiced for blackstar amps, which are kind of dark, so the speaker tends to have a harsh high end on other amps.
+Nezzka Do Urden the laney cab with HH custom 12" speaker is much more harsh based on my experience. switched to HT5 112 used with celestion blackbird 50, sounds much better and more balanced into my ironheart studio. the blackbird

it's one blackbird speaker against two 70/80 speakers (1x12 vs 2x12). Not fair comparison.
