We grow strawberries in big containers (1m x 40cm x 50 cm), they're fine and don't die during winter. It's snowy here, though, so the containers are completely covered with snow.
I remember seeing those burpee seed catalogs... my dad was in horticulture so we always had random plant-related publications lying around. He had quite the garden at home and was a sales rep for several different nursery stock companies.
