For some reason, context is not usually considered when speaking of style rules in the sartorial realm, but today, I'm going to defend rule breaking and tell you why context matters.

Black tie and White tie are the one exception. Unless it's Creative Black tie you should never break those rules, you just don't. Everything else from Creative Black tie formality and down is at your discretion and the occasion like Levi said.
Exactly. If I were to attend either Black or White tie I'd go by the rules full stop; it's all about the rules, formality and giving the creative attention to the ladies, not the men. The fact that people go crazy at Black tie events that aren't specifically Creative Black Tie is sad imho

The only reason rules exist is so fashion designers can seem edgy when they break them
