If you would have told me when I was twenty something, that someday one could sit in their dining area or den, grab their guitar, take a sip of wine, and sing a song, then post it on TH-cam for potentially millions of viewers, I would have said..”no way!” Now that I am 78, I truly understand that change can come in small waves, or in giant tsunami’s. But the platform or social media is never better than the thing posted, and when an old and mournful, pleasing folk song is played and sang by a superb artist, it is a delight to behold. The rich history of folk music goes on. If we would all just stop to appreciate it, the ballad, the story in a song, the narrative of a life lived with ups and downs, success and failure, happy times, and even depression, well, all I can say is…..there is a universal longing, artistic expression, and a message for each of us. Let us all keep looking for it. God bless.
@@dreamalittledo I’m not from USA but I think this kind of music and performance is more popular there than what goes for popular music. For the few big money stars there are thousands making or supplementing a living. This song is Americana genre, which I see as a fusion of folk music from many countries. I think you should check bluegrass music if you haven’t already, a root of Americana, and itself rooted in Scandinavian folk music.
Thank you young lady. Not only did you make this old man smile but I’m sure there’s a man named John smiling down by the Green River where Paradise lay.
Greetings from Germany and thank you for this beautiful tribute to John Prine. There is no better way to do it. I am sure he would be very happy about it and he would be proud.
The dress, the table, the colour scheme, the guitar, the ice cold beverage and of course, you Toni. It all comes together in one beautifully inspired masterpiece. Thanks Toni!
True. Nice dress, nice painting, nice table, nice plant. Real nice sound. Actually, at the end, at 4:05, the pattern of the dress and the pattern on the side of the table come together with the shapes of the paintings on the walls. Nice work all around. Again, nice voice and playing.
So glad Blaze Foley is getting the recognition he deserves, I found this song about a year or so ago and have been obsessed with it since. Seeing more and more covers coming out makes me so happy.
Everything about this performance is stunningly beautiful, starting with the clarity of the guitar and circling to the mellow tones of Toni’s voice. A keeper.
I've been playing and singing this awesome song for years. Blaze Foley's story has a very sad ending but John Prine gave the song some exposure. This is a great version. Thanks Toni!
Great performance of one of the best tunes ever written. The legacy of Texas songwriters like Blaze Foley, Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark is an absolute gold mine.
Those names you mention help make up my playlist. It’s remarkable to me why not everyone knows those names. It’s uplifting knowing that Toni, Elle, Carson McKee and Josh Turner are keeping those names alive. Toni is my favorite guitarist by far now. Carry on guys.
I love this song and this cover is so beautiful. Fun fact: feeding pigeons clay protects them and heals them against certain things. It made me view the lyrics in a more beautiful light.

@@ToniLindgrenToni, outstanding as usual. You've probably mentioned before maybe many times, but which Martin is that? I notice it's long saddle, toner, gold butterbean likely open-back tuners, ie, not your current "everyday herringbone" - so original vintage or whatever they call their various tribute/homage/reissue models? And what strings and gauges? Mine is a c.1999 standard D-28 I've had since new, looking forward to giving it a proper 25th party next year, and it's great, but doesn't sound like this! Scalloped bracing I'm sure is part of it. The player something to do with the rest I'm sure, ha! Gorgeous guitar and performance regardless.
Literally everything in this video is beautiful to look at, then it's soaked in beautiful music. That took me away...and I'm still sitting here...frozen....
The simple niceness of the setting and Toni's slightly-modified style perfectly matches her performance of the song. The genius of Toni and Reina lies in their ability to get this kind of thing just right when their musical talent alone might seem to guarantee their success. It's a craftsmanship which many musical stars didn't seem to develop before TH-cam. It's not the best platform for _everything,_ but it is the best for this sort of thing!
For those who may not know, this was a Blaze Foley song that John Prine did a cover of. Blaze had a small but powerful repertoire of original songs that are worth hearing.

Interesting! I had always thought John Prine wrote it himself. As they say "That is what I get for doing my own thinking." LOL Eventhough John Prine was much older than Toni when he passed, I would have Loved to have saw Toni and John performing as a Duo together. He was such a Great songwriter!
Thanks for doing this compliment to Blaze. He would be crying right now. Back in the day we all knew him as that guy who always needs to borrow five bucks and a string or two. I knew him. I knew the troubled soul that shot him. I lived across the street about three doors down from where he was shot. He was so humble. He loved poetry. He persisted even though he never really made a dime from his effort. He's much larger in death than life. He would probably laugh and make self deprecating jokes about that were he here. Then he would probably get all philosophical and talk about how many better people would pass through this life and never be remembered. Then he'd pour some of his beer out in respect for the departed. He was here a short time. Knew trouble, joy, and love. And after, slept.
The way you channeled Mr Prine's sound, voice and guitar, is truly amazing. Many of yours and Elle's covers are creative and inventive modifications that I appreciate. I love this one because it is so close to the original but in a (wonderful) female voice.
Performing this at the low end of her vocal range gives a definite Prine effect. Masterful playing - left hand like a spider's legs (in the very best way).
Ah Toni, that was beautiful. First of all great choice on the song. Your picking was spot on as always. Your vocals are a joy. I can remember leaving a comment a long time ago that singing low and quiet was difficult to do well. So I suggested you sing to the back row., and not be timid. It has been a real treat to hear more of you in recent months. I enjoy all the combinations we get from you and Reina and all y'alls friends. I really enjoy hearing you step out and sing. Keep doing what you obviously love to do Toni. Make music. Always looking for what's next from you. Thanks for this vid.
As Inhave said before many times, you are one of the tastiest lead players out there. Now you show a mellow smooth voice and melodic finger picking. So much talent and an inspiration.
Beautiful sang ,interpretation and arrangement ,Toni my friend ! Excellent performance! Congratulations and great like ! Best wishes from Austria !🎶🎤🎸❤
The best song writing is story telling that is real and relatable. Thank you for introducing me to this song Toni. I am not actually from the younger generation, but I have had a huge void in my knowledge of such music. My appreciation of well done covers has gone up so much since I started following you. In a world of mega production and super concerts I greatly appreciate the pure beauty of a well played acoustic guitar accompanied by a sweet, humble voice.
Great song. Great guitarist. Great singer. Great cover. There are so few performances anywhere that can match this. Your taste in all you do is impeccable. Proof, for me, is how fast the tears welled up as soon as you began to sing. More please, the world needs you...

Take care and we'll see each other on the Isle of Avalon.
She has the most beautiful timing and touch on all her guitar playing. She's in a class of her own. Love all her and Reina's music!
Eh she’s okay lol
I adore Toni. Not so much Reina. Reina does not love the unborn child.
The finger playing on the guitar and singing voice is something out of the ordinary
Just a woman, her guitar and a ton of talent,... a superb example of 'less is more'! Thank you, Toni, for enriching our lives with what you do!
So well said! And so true!

She wasn't just playing and singing a song a lot of hurt in her past sure came out in her voice and in her guitar. A very heartfelt piece!
Great version of this John Prine song! With her voice and emotion she seems like a “soul sister” of John.
