Hello, I bought this S2 Custom 24, actually it is a really good guitar, but not equal like the CORE series. When I bought it the salesman in Sam Ash told me that it was a pure USA PRS guitar. In the PRS page said the same, but it is not true, the electronics, the tremolo, and pickups (G&B) are the same of SE Serie. So the reality of this guitar is that all the manufacture in wood is Made in USA, the electronics, tremolo and pickups are imported from Korea, to be assembled in the guitar in USA.
What I will to do, is it change the pickups (G&B) to PRS 59/09, the Tremolo to USA PRS Tremolo, and the volume pot to american one, the tone pot is ok. I know one guy that made those changes to his S2 PRS and now he has a real USA PRS S2 amazing guitar. Even with those changes the total price is cheap compare with PRS CORE Serie guitars.
I hope my comments be helpful for you.

Thanks for your comment,I'm going to buy S2, but still have a doubt is this a real USA guitar.

3 way switch was getting on my nerves, I've opened the guitar and I've lost my words. I couldn't believe this think was packed up with nasty cheap electronics. Changed everything but pickups because those are too expensive for me right now, one day will do that.

The major issue I have had with the S2 is the pots. The taper is very weird

The way I understand it, it is a true tap. Some just kill half the pickup and call it a coil tap, which is dead wrong. These not only tap, but engage 1500 additional windings so that you lose no signal strength, no volume. So it is a true tap. I am not sure if it is humbucking or not, but it's a true single coil. Almost like a P-90.

In practice the coil tap is very thin, not robust like a p-90. If you own a Tele or a Strat it will be very unsatisfying. The 85/15 S pickups are mid range, mid heavy, and not very rich harmonically. They also have a very thuddy quality to me on the attack. Unplugged my S2 Custom 22 Semi Hollow sounds fantastic, plugged in with stock pickups, dull, muddy, thuddy crap. Love the guitar hate the electronics.

why the audio pan of this video is 1% left / 99% right?

  • @Robstafarian
    @Robstafarian 11 ปีที่แล้ว

I know that technique was used for the 408 pickups, and it would be a very nice surprise if the S2 series used pickups made that way.
It is good to know someone else is bothered by the incorrect use of the phrase "coil tap."

Who gives a shit If they call it coil tap. Your life must suck if that bothers you. You probably correct people who misspell words on Facebook or TH-cam. Get a life.

To be clear: does the DPDT activate a true tap, or is it simply a split?

I have a s2 standard satin... and I have to say that the build quality is superb... and the pickups do sound really good.. so in my case this video rings true... what I like about s2 over the $1500/$3000+ line is that I want to play it and not have to worry about destroying something so high end and expensive.. so the s2 satin is perfect for me... If it gets a few dings its ok.. it fits the vintage satin look.. I'd like to see the S2 satin get a upgraded model... it would be the same guitar... satin and all.. but with the core electronics.. pickups... and trem.. that would be MY perfect upgrade. Attention: PAUL!!! :)

I have a satin s2 24 as well. Changed the pickups as the korean ones are a step behind any SD or PRS USA pup. Changed today the tremolo block with a brass one and brass saddles Now, it's a full USA core model sounding guitar

What kind of magnets are in the S2 Singlecut pickups? Anico 2 or 5?

No they are the same. S2 guitars still have wooden bodies that are carved and built in Maryland (but done so with a less complicated process and shape for easier and less expensive production). The guitars are assembled with foreign built tremolos and pickups different from the Core models that are built in the USA. The electronics utilize less expensive parts (no name capacitors and Alpha potentiometers, still decent quality though but much more cost effective). The string tuners are different but actually really good. I personally think they function the best for all of the PRS lines from SE up to Core models. The aren’t flashy, but just work really well. I would “assume” they’re manufactured by the same companies (Schaller or Gotoh) that produced previous Core models.
The pickups are good, but not great in my opinion. I think you can find the occasional gem, but mostly Seymour Duncan and DiMarzio would be better pickups. Plus the S2 pickups are generally not as good as the current American PRS pickups which I think are fantastic (Metal, 57/08s, 59/09s and 85/15s). Although with what I’ve said I have played some of the G&B 85/15 “S” pickups that were pretty good. I wouldn’t necessarily rush to change those out. The older generic G&B produced pickups prior to the S2 production and even the S2 #7 “S” pickups weren’t all that impressive to me.

sounds like a good guitar to buy, play a while, then upgrade the pups/electronics when you want it to be all-USA
if you don't want it to be, that's fine, too. some of us will want that, though ;)

So, basicly these pickups are exactly the same as the us made ones, but cheaper because they are made by under payed people, inclusive the transport.. I have a S2 Standard mc carthy. Love it!

I’ve just got an S2 and the G&B neck pickup is a bloody swamp of mud! Splitting it doesn’t really help, adjusting height and poles no real clarity added. I’ve emailed PRS techs and they’re only responds is buy 58/7 for $300. These guys on the video our speaking BS these Korean copies are no way close to a US pickup after A/B testing them at Guitar Center you can hear the difference. It’s sad that PRS has to cheap out on pickups after selling a $1k plus guitar my Fender Squire set up has much more clear and defined tones.

I'm a COMPLETE newbie to PRS...My go to for years has been my Gary Moore 2000 LP...Picked up an S2 Standard 22 Satin Great guitar, but I agree...the neck pickup drives me crazy, and the Treble bleed cap, if there is one...needs a swap...haven't opened er up yet.
I'm considering upgrading...but not up on PRS pickup compatibility...*what pups work well together) etc...and so begins another MILLION hours of research...lol...Any input from yooos gear heads would be appreciated..Thanks
      Peace~
