Many people have mentioned steel plate. Remember, lots of schools have metal detectors. Also remember that body armor is prohibited in some places so the AR plates, the Kevlar book bags, etc. may not be available to everyone. then there's the matter of cost. The ceramic tile was $1.97 How much does the tactical back pack cost?
And remember, you have to get your books out of your bag without everyone seeing the tile. So the armor has to be under the books even if it may be more effective on top of them.

Something to consider as well is that you could probably make an effective bullet stop with several layers of ceramic and not worry with the Kevlar or poly.

As stupid as it may sound, and trust me, I doubt these arguments are being made in good faith in the first place, if body armor is illegal where you live, yes a school will tell your child they cannot wear any form of body armor, be it in a backpack or otherwise.

Where I live, no one can (legally) get an m16 (assault rifle)
However, like the rest of the country, an AR-15 type rifle (civilian, semi-automatic rifle with many similarities, same barrel, etc) is quite common amongst firearms owners. It's not a stretch to imagine a deranged adult bringing one to a school, or a teen stealing one from an older friend or relative to do the same. Even though nothing of the sort has happened in my area, I'm glad Paul has shown the difference in power between even an intermediate cartridge like 5.56 NATO versus a pistol cartridge like 9x19 or .45 ACP. For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure Paul's A1 rifle is *not* a select fire M16 - but the quote sounds better to call it an M16

Another great presentation. Here's a helpful note. It's not just kids that carry backpacks. Many adults work in settings where it would not be uncommon to bring a bookbag to work. They're so much more useful than say, a briefcase. However in addition to all of the items you determined to provide projectile resistance, add to that my ham and cheese sandwich on whole wheat and sometimes a small bag of chips or Oreos. Now let's take a look!

This really makes me think about something I really didn't want to think about. Some of the suggested items are not terribly expensive and are all readily available in most cities. With my wife and myself about to tile a part of the house, tile like that will be available. We can give extras away to those expressing concern. We can get the plexy cut to our needs as I know of several places around me. The body armor, I haven't even thought to investigate that. Even though I walk the kids to school and they get a ride back, if something were to happen IN the school, they'd have a bit of extra protection.

    Thanks for the video!
If you ever do a follow-up, another idea would be to try to use kevlar sheet rather than pre-made body armor. First, ordering kevlar sheet from Amazon gets one around any legal issues related to "bullet resistant vests." Kevlar is used many places for many things, and I think most people can order the stuff from Amazon. One product I found in a quick search said that it required special handling and couldn't be sent to my address. I suspect that's because I don't have home mail delivery and can only use a PO box. Most people can probably order kevlar sheet from Amazon and make their own lining for a book pack. I suspect that making one's own lining would be cheaper than buying something specifically made as body armor. Considering that a book pack has to be reinforced with books, plexiglass, and a tile in order to stop a rifle bullet, maybe a homemade pad using kevlar sheet would be just as effective.
If I had a kid and were trying to create something like this, I'd consider gluing the tile between two pieces of plexiglass. I know that people have made some silly videos about the bullet resistance of Flex Seal, and I suspect that Flex Seal isn't all that resistant. However, using Flex Seal to glue plexiglass to each side of a ceramic tile might increase the effectiveness of the tile and give the benefit of the plexiglass to stop fragments. I'd then put a piece of foam over the plexiglass meant to go closest to the body. I don't think the foam would do much besides make the whole contraption more comfortable. I'd then put kevlar on both sides and maybe put nylon over the kevlar to stop abrasion. Based on the tests in this presentation, that wouldn't stop a bullet, but maybe a couple of books in front of all that would make something effective. Again, the point would be to offer an idea for anyone who couldn't get or couldn't afford official body armor.

Sad but interesting and informative video. I have three kids, only one of which is still in school, but I would worry on occasion about them being in these kinds of situations. As has been said, many kids today don’t have the heavy tomes that I remember carrying in school, more an iPad or Chromebook, but still good to know what it would take to keep your kid safer when the bullets start flying.

Just a thought, but what about wrapping the tile in fleece? The tile being much harder than a bullet should fragment the bullet and we’ve seen time and again that fleece does a good job of capturing reduced energy fragments and expanded bullets. That and having it wrapped in fleece will make it less obvious while only adding a little bulk.

Speaking from personal experience, i was nearly run down at least twice and i knew a girl who spent 5 months in the hospital when a sedan sailed through a red light and hit her on a corner. I knew absolutely no-one, who knew anyone, who knew anyone that died in a school shooting.

I do think this might be slightly off though, with modern school children, frequently not carrying books anymore, but actually carrying a laptop/tablet computer, with their books on that. I’m just guessing but I would think at least the latter would hold up for a couple of rounds.

The Run, Hide, Fight video was something that was shown to us at our work a few years ago. I carry a concealed pistol when not at work and I was in management at the time. They wanted our feedback before showing to video to all of the other employees. After watching the video, our store manager went around the table to get our feedback. I purposely sat in the very back of the room, knowing I was going to have some politically incorrect statement to make. When the store manager asked me for a comment (I think I was still rubbing my temples in pain) I looked straight up and said, "Can I make a video on the same topic?? I will call it, 'Take cover, Take aim, Return fire'".
Sadly, my idea was not taken seriously.
This subject has come up though, as the work I do involves the public, and anyone can come and go in our facility. Even if company policy allowed for conceal carry of a firearm at work, the last thing I would ever do is try to hunt down some maniac shooting up our building. I'm gonna get out of Dodge. The ONLY time I would ever respond with deadly force is if I was to get cornered and that was my very last option. I don't get paid to save the day, my motivation is to save my ass and my loved ones, and hopefully if that day ever comes, I am able to make the right decisions to accomplish that goal.

@@timewave02012 Thermonuclear attacks are also actually statistically rare. They also get a lot of media coverage. But disproportional coverage? No, not really. The thing about school mass shootings is, that they should not take place at all. Not in a civilized country, not in an uncivilized country. Not even in a fucking war zone. And yet they happen. It's children being massacred thousands of miles from the nearest battlefield. I take "disproportional coverage" over "swept under the rug" any day of the week. The fact that kids accidentally get caught in the line of fire on their way to school should also have media coverage. And why put quotes around threats? It's either a threat or not a threat.

@@thomasraahauge5231 school mass shootings actually happen for very rational reasons. Mabey they "shouldn't" happen, but they do and we do nothing to figure out why. • @timewave02012
      @timewave02012 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@thomasraahauge5231 The problem with media coverage is that it reinforces the idea-to people with certain mental conditions-that a school shooting is a thing they can do to get national or maybe worldwide attention. As for "should not take place at all", I agree with the sentiment, but what do we do about it? Schools shouldn't be a place where diseases spread, but unfortunately spreading disease is an inherent risk of gathering many people in one place. When COVID-19 hit, we decided the risk was too great and stopped sending children to school. We didn't allow them with PPE, or temperature checks at the door-we shut the schools down. That's a guaranteed way to stop school shootings too, but we don't do it, because everyone who can separate numbers from feelings knows it isn't worth the harm to children's educations.
