We adored this song when it came out. I remember driving around with it blasting and my friend yelling SCIENCE! at people working in their yards. We were so stupid, but it was fun.
Thomas Dolby is a synthesizer genius. As a session musician, he played the synthesizer/keyboards on Foreigner's 1981 album "Foreigner 4," including on the hit songs "Urgent" and "Waiting for a Girl Like You" and "Juke Box Hero." ... Whenever "She Blinded Me With Science" would play at the bars back in college, we would all sing and dance along.
This is a GREAT GOOFY song! One of the best songs of the 80s! I love singing along with Dolby when the song comes on the soundtrack at stores, ESPECIALLY WHEN I'M WORKING AT THAT STORE! SCIENCE! Glad you enjoyed!
I heard this first in a club in NYC that was converted from a huge and very ornate bank lobby, large screen TVs all along the upper balcony walls, the marble and glass made it a perfect echo chamber. I was floored. Yes it was something completely new and I thought hmmm maybe the 80s won't suck. I immediately bought a pair of round wire rim glasses with coke bottle green lenses...so cooool!
This song is still on all my New Wave and Best of 80s playlists just for the sheer funky melodic earworm insanity of it all. It's just one of those songs that you fall in love with at first listen, and even though you might not hear it for a few years, you still love it just as much when it wanders back to you again. I never heard anything else from Thomas Dolby, but he has a permanent spot in my memory on the strength of this one song.
Magnus Pyke was a nutritional scientist and a governmental scientific advisor. However he was huge in the UK for presenting TV shows that brought science to the masses. He had a very eccentric expressive style that made absolutely anything he spoke about fascinating. He was the perfect celebrity to bring on board for such a quirky song. I highly recommend that you also listen to Dolby's "Wind power". I loved Dolby back in the day. People were experimenting with music, and he was out there!
We had one the same in Australia. Professor Julias Sumner Miller, did great shows in the 60’s on black and white tv all about science and was wonderfully eccentric. The shows were great to watch when I was in primary school, taught kids to love science and experimenting.
Hey Salvo Thomas Dolby used to play keyboards in David Bowie's band back in the early- mid 80's. You can see Thomas playing for David in the Live Aid concert from 1985!!
I remember playing this on the college radio station back in the early mid 80s. Even today when friends and I would play trivia and the host would announce a science question or round, we all scream "Science!" much the psychiatrist.
The old guy was the host of a science show geared towards schoolchildren. He didn't really understand what was going on, but he went along with it all anyway.
Alright, someone else who loves I Love You Goodbye!!! One of my favorite songs ever! I'm a huge TD fan, his memoir is a great read and he just published his first novel, which is next up on my to read list. I also love Budapest by Blimp, The Flat Earth, Flying North, Windpower, May the Cube Be With You, Beauty of a Dream, White City... I can go on and on!
My friend Matthew Seligman played regularly with Dolby (among many others) back in the 80s. On this you can hear Matthew's iconic bass playing. Highly regarded by his fellow musicians (including Dolby), he is sadly missed.
Julie, thanks for the request, HUGE Thomas Dolby fan here!!! Sal, yes, there are a lot of great songs on the album. Dolby was part of the initial electronic/new wave explosion in the 80's that included bands like Duran Duran and Human League. Although his music was electronic based, it was the most human sounding of the genre and with a funky edge as well. His song, I Love You Goodbye, from a later album, is one of the most amazing songs ever. Definitely worth checking out. Also check out Budapest by Blimp, The Flat Earth, May the Cube be With You (with funkmaster George Clinton), Beauty of a Dream (with Jerry Garcia from Grateful Dead), White City, I Live in a Suitcase... I can go on and on. Even Michael Jackson was a big fan of his. He's absolutely brilliant!
Dolby was pretty much a one hit wonder in the states as far as being a solo artist. Though he did play keyboard for both Foreigner and Def Leppard under an alias. He was definitely ahead of his time.
I miss seeing actual music videos. I love it when they tell an interesting story. Thomas Dolby is one of the most interesting artists I’ve heard. He invented Dolby sound. Thanks for reacting to this. 🔬🧫🥼🧪 SCIENCE!!
I bought "The Golden Age of Wireless" when it was released, and I still listen to it regularly to this day. Every song is good; the lyrics are very clever, the music is good - it's got funk, jazz, synthpop, etc. I never skip around on this one, just play it straight through.
He was a real scientist and nutritionist from paddington London he was on a couple of shows in the 70's and 80's with other scientists that answered questions. He died in 92 age 83.
I think Magnus Pyke was a food scientist - he worked for The Distillers Company at Alloa , Clackmannanshire ( yes that is a county in Scotland). Vitamins were his area of expertise. He promoted the distribution of Rose Hip Syrup as a source of vitamin C to babies and children owing to the disappearance of oranges during WW2.
This is just as much fun now as it was when it was first released and we were crankin' it up on the best stereo systems in the electronics store where I worked at the time.
Magnus Pyke was a scientist. He also was on British TV shows. At least one of them got shown down here in NZ during my childhood. Me and my sister thought it was pretty cool when he later popped up in this video.
Synth pop was everywhere in the early 80s. See "I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls, Cars by Gary Numan, Whip It by DEVO. Human League, Tears for Fears, Soft Cell, ABC, etc.
Hyperactive was a big hit but it didn’t age as well so maybe it is a good window into that time period. Off of The Golden Age of Wireless, I like One of Our Submarines - but it is a little atmospheric for a reaction video, instead Europa and the Pirate Twins…
Quirky novelty single UNLIKE anything else on the album Golden Age of Wireless album which is a gem! Highly recommended listen 🥂 Check out the song Europa and the Pirate Twins 🎉
Magnus Pyke OBE, was a real scientist, his field was nutrition and he was a governmental adviser for food. He was a real character and was known for his enthusiasm and arm waving when he spoke. What you see in the video was pretty much how he was when he spoke.
I’m glad that you tipped your toe into the water with the 1982 debut album (The Golden Age of Wireless) from Thomas Dolby. My favourite single from the album is Europa and the Pirate Twins. My favourite Thomas Dolby track is The Flat Earth (1984), the title track of the follow up album. I would say give this song a go for its sound scape and for being one of the first music reactors to pick up on the song….. p.s Mr Dolby also popped up on The Wall Concert in Berlin with Roger Waters (1990)
I forgot how fun the song and video are! It def charted in America - probably top ten by the number of radio and video plays. His second album wasn’t as commercially successful as his debut, but the songs "Screen Kiss" snd "The Flat Earth" are worth checking out.
Loved his early work with foreigner 4 waiting for a girl..and writing lene lovich’s new toy and his first album Europa ant the pirate twins radio silence and one of our submarines.. later with white city, multi, I scare myself so inventive so 80s essential
Hey SalvoG. Thanks for reacting to this '80's treasure. Give "Eastern Bloc" a listen. Thomas Dolby featuring Eddie Van Halen on lead guitar makes for a great listen! "Hyperactive" is also a great T.D. tune!!
THANK you for studying and telling us about the artist BEFORE teeing it up. Most of these reactors just go in cold and proceed to make useless comments including "Oh, what TV show or commercial have I heard this song in before?"
Take a listen to the song Cars by Gary Numan. Check out DEVO, maybe listen to the entire debut album “Q: Are we not men? A: We are DEVO!” That’s what was going on in that corner… This was New Wave, you had to be there. Everything was changing as rock met dance and punk. Then technology took it crazy places. What a crazy time me to be in Art Scool!!👍
We adored this song when it came out. I remember driving around with it blasting and my friend yelling SCIENCE! at people working in their yards. We were so stupid, but it was fun.
I still love this and randomly shout “science!”
Thomas Dolby is a synthesizer genius. wait really? I had no idea!
His memoir is a great read!
Much like Foreigner...another Mutt Lange produced gem with Thomas Dolby, he is also on a few Pyromania songs from Def Leppard
I believe the "science" is pheremones. "I can smell her chemicals".
It was on the radio every
five minutes 📻 🎵 😊
The "Science Guy" was actual scientist Magnus Pyke.
This is a GREAT GOOFY song! One of the best songs of the 80s! I love singing along with Dolby when the song comes on the soundtrack at stores, ESPECIALLY WHEN I'M WORKING AT THAT STORE! SCIENCE! Glad you enjoyed!

I never heard anything else from Thomas Dolby, but he has a permanent spot in my memory on the strength of this one song.
His catalog is amazing. Check out the song, I Love You Goodbye, it mixes electronic with funk and zydeco. It's one of my very favorite songs ever.

He was almost like the equivalent of, and I’m dating myself here, Mr Wizard or if you go more recent bill nye the science guy.
The Professor ended up hating the song.
Anonymous people would run up to him and yell, "Science"!!!
Magnus Pyke was brilliant. I once heard him suggest making each day 28hrs long and getting rid of Monday altogether. 😆
EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT.... SO GLAD YOU GOTTA SEE THIS....
This one always gets me dancing 🎉 hoorah 80s!
God I love Dolby! His memoir is incredible, a great read. I got to see him live in a small club when he toured his Flat Earth album. Amazing!
@ohfour-seven6228 I'll have to grab the book, he's obviously a unique force!
The best of the 80s playlist!
This, Der Kommisar, Electric Avenue, and Toni Basil were mainstays
Der Kommisar could go two ways and you can't lose either way. Please add Golden Earring's "Twilight Zone" so the list is complete.
Gotta add Rockit by Herbie Hancock!
Such a fun fun song!
Oh, Salvo....we had the same look on our faces...but it's SO catchy, we were constantly singing it. Hilarious. Thanks so much.
They produced such a cool, trippy sound with that synthesizer. Then that percussion with it!!! Fun jam.
Hyperactive is a great track as well.
So fun!! One of the many unique hits from the 80’s! Glad you liked it Sal! Great request Julie!!
"Airwaves" and "I Love You Goodbye" are songs you would love. After all these years, I still play them. Beautiful music.
Alright, someone else who loves I Love You Goodbye!!! One of my favorite songs ever! Wonderful suggestions. Can we remark on what a wonderful actor Thomas was in this video?
I love that menacing sound combined with the funkiness! This song never gets old.
Yay you watched it !!!! Will never get tired of the song (or video) 🏆
I'm so lucky to have been in High School when this came out. We had THE BEST time back then. SCIENCE!!!
Thomas Dolby, genius!
Huge fan here!
LOL, I can't believe you played Thomas Dolby, he's increddible!!!
OMG, how can I forget One of Our Submarines, another must hear from TD!
This was a monster hit in the 80'
s
Science!!
OMG! This song was 🔥! We danced like maniacs when this came on! Ahhh... The 80's!❤
Love this song. Fun memories. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
No musical instruments were harmed, or used, during the making of this song. 🤣
So glad you liked this fun and unforgettable 80's tune. I wish I could go back and hear so many songs for the first time. Sending you best wishes. 😊💞
My friend Matthew Seligman played regularly with Dolby (among many others) back in the 80s. On this you can hear Matthew's iconic bass playing. Highly regarded by his fellow musicians (including Dolby), he is sadly missed.
I used to bust a move to this song. Live it up if you're in your 20s....best time of your life :)

You definitely need to hear this whole thing! This isn't just the best synth pop album of the 80's, but one of the best albums, period.
I miss seeing actual music videos. I love it when they tell an interesting story. Thomas Dolby is one of the most interesting artists I’ve heard.
He invented Dolby sound.
Thanks for reacting to this. 🔬🧫🥼🧪
SCIENCE!!
I bought "The Golden Age of Wireless" when it was released, and I still listen to it regularly to this day. Every song is good; the lyrics are very clever, the music is good - it's got funk, jazz, synthpop, etc. I never skip around on this one, just play it straight through.
This song is played in movie "Weird Science", you need 😢 watch it. Funny as hell🤣🤣
I loved that movie and Kelly LeBrock!
I highly recommend "I Love You, Goodbye". Tremendous.
One of my favorite songs ever!!! Huge TD fan here!
I was a kid when it came out. It was back in the day when music videos on MTV were a big thing. Was the early days of MTV.
I was mainly a hard rock and metal kid, and even I liked this song. Great quirky singalong.
Thomas can also be heard on Def Leppards "Photograph" and "Rock of ages" on the synth
Salvo - for your own kicks, his album Aliens Ate My Buick is a great ride. Do it loud on a good system.
Listen to the song/video "Hyperactive" by Dolby. Great fun!!.
He was a real scientist and nutritionist from paddington London he was on a couple of shows in the 70's and 80's with other scientists that answered questions.
He died in 92 age 83.
Canadian here . . . such fun when we were young.

You should check out the song "Europa and the Pirate Twins" Thomas Dolby is awesome
Thomas Dolby is a genius. Listen to "One of our Submarines" lyrically amazing and "Hyperactive" is great also!
I was 13 when this classic came out!
This is just as much fun now as it was when it was first released and we were crankin' it up on the best stereo systems in the electronics store where I worked at the time.
Lol! I like your reaction to this. I remember this song from the 1980's. I was probably 17 when it was released.
Wind power!!! It will blow you away, lol, no pun intended 😂❤
She's tidied up and now I can't find anything!
A statement made by many men lol
If you like this one Salvo then check out weird science by Oingo Boingo!!!
It's so goofy, but that beat is HARD.
Adore Thomas Dolby...I recommend the album 'Aliens Ate My Buik'......Killer in it's entirety.
I recently came across his TH-cam channel and in the most recent video at the time he was only talking about the new toupee he got. LOL
Haven’t heard this in a long time, great song, interesting video😂!!❤❤
Magnus Pyke OBE, was a real scientist, his field was nutrition and he was a governmental adviser for food. He was a real character and was known for his enthusiasm and arm waving when he spoke. What you see in the video was pretty much how he was when he spoke.
Magnus Pyke was the Scientist. And he was one in real life. He used to explain science to us in a way we’d understand 🇬🇧💜🇬🇧
You want quirky, you should react to Mental Hopscotch by Missing Persons. GREAT 80s tune.
I’m glad that you tipped your toe into the water with the 1982 debut album (The Golden Age of Wireless) from Thomas Dolby. My favourite single from the album is Europa and the Pirate Twins.

Fun little song.
this one is awesome but my favorite of him is hyperactive! saw the video when I was a kid and it always stayed in my mind! great, crazy song!!!
They almost used this song for The Big Bang Theory's theme, but instead they got The Barenaked Ladies to do it.
A classic example of 80s Nerd Rock.
Loved his early work with foreigner 4 waiting for a girl..and writing lene lovich’s new toy and his first album Europa ant the pirate twins radio silence and one of our submarines.. later with white city, multi, I scare myself
so inventive so 80s essential
You have to hear "Dissidents" and "Mulu the Rainforest"
I'd like to suggest getting into some Trance music with Paul Van Dyk. A great starting point would be "I Don't Deserve You (feat. Plumb)".
The theme song for all of us female science geeks!
Europa and the Pirate Twins is a favorite of mine
This and Sledgehammer were huge videos, from what I remember, wow I’m old
I LOVE Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel.
My stereo system has a ‘Dolby’ setting (noise cancelling) when playing cassettes!
You need to listen to "One of our Submarines", from this album. It's the best song, IMHO. I think it's right up your alley.
Hey SalvoG. Thanks for reacting to this '80's treasure. Give "Eastern Bloc" a listen. Thomas Dolby featuring Eddie Van Halen on lead guitar makes for a great listen! "Hyperactive" is also a great T.D. tune!!
:D What a song..... excuse me while I *turn it UP!*
Don't overthink this, it is just fun and funny
✨💫✨
One Of Our Submarines, Windpower and Hyperactivate are worth a listen.
Der Kommisar Next
Hyperactive is incredible!!!!
Such a funky bass on that.
Hyperactive by him is good also.
Maybe some Adam Ant, Psychedelic Furs, Joe Jackson, and Howard Jones?
☮️💙💙💙🔥🔥😎
THANK you for studying and telling us about the artist BEFORE teeing it up. Most of these reactors just go in cold and proceed to make useless comments including "Oh, what TV show or commercial have I heard this song in before?"
RIP Magnus Pyke [the 'psychiatrist'].
Those were the days when we had real scientists [unlike today].
So, Salvo, have you been walking around proclaiming "Science!" the last few days? 😆
Seeing as you like Uk electropop, have you reacted to 'Blancmange'? I'm sure you'd love them.
Take a listen to the song Cars by Gary Numan.
Check out DEVO,
maybe listen to the entire debut album “Q: Are we not men? A: We are DEVO!” That’s what was going on in that corner…
This was New Wave, you had to be there. Everything was changing as rock met dance and punk. Then technology took it crazy places. What a crazy time me to be in Art Scool!!👍
