I dedicated this song to my old bestfriend, from about 10 years ago. He died in a car crash right before his first daughter was born. In no way was our relationship romantic, but we both loved this song and appreciated eachother in times of great need. Sometimes I randomly think of this song while washing dishes, or folding laundry and cry. It's been three years and no, it doesn't get easier. It becomes something you are able to bear though.
I had lung surgery a few months ago and after every procedure I would listen to this song and it calms me.... honestly this song just speaks to something so deep in the human psyche.
I was in the middle of listening to this, when my brother called to tell me our mother had passed away. Every time I hear it, I’m reminded of her. Far away on her “island”
haven't listened to this song in ages. take me right back to a special time during my youth. there are times i wish i could re-experience those moments just one more time.
I’ve been listening to yall since you were The Jakes, and nothing will ever come close to the vibe or feeling of your first album. Still all these years later, it’s still my favorite
There's just something about this song that touches me on a deeper level than most music. It's an awe-inspiring feeling and it makes this one of my favorite songs of all time and that will never change.
I can't believe this is the first song I ever heard from them in 2011 and seeing them live last Friday At the Hammerstein , hooked since the start. Real talent .
Maybe I'm just hearing this wrong, but the lyrics I'm hearing is: Five days Underwater Near your island Off the coast Oh no Five ways You were my lover Incantations Of the tide In rhyme Oh out in the glow I'll find you waiting Oh has it been so long now Oh I thought you knew that I'd be coming The way you move A foreign groove at night I could never I could never hold you Watch it rise up Where you hide your pearls Feel it pile up Where you cast those stones you wear When no one's home Do they feel cold on your bones All the years I've missed your warmth Have you missed my warmth? On your island Island
it is so annoying that everywhere is the wrong lyric, even THEY post the wrong one, and i was always struggling to hear out those words but never could. I'm happy i found this version because it's clear now what exactly he is saying. But I think he says: "I know five ways you were my lover"
6 years and i come back to this recording. I remember this session in particular touched my heart and changed who i was forever at the time. Its so funny how the same song can teach a new thing in a different part of life. Thank you Young the Giant.
I've seen them three times. I never miss them when they come to my town. I almost missed them the last time I saw them, in late August. I had work, and the tickets for the festival they were at were too expensive for how shitty the lineup was. So, I had lost hope, basically. Then, some random dude on Tinder asked me what I was doing that weekend, and that he had an extra ticket. I told him to expect me to get off of work that night--I was going to make it happen. So I made it happen! Random Tinder man got me a way into my favorite band. I have not spoken to him since. You call it desperation, I call it innovation and dedication. Love my Giants.
I remember listening to this album and this version of Islands religiously my first year of high school when I felt so alone and so confused by my emotions and puberty and all that fun stuff. I fell in love with this sound so much, I wish I could just go back to those days when everything felt new and beautiful. I love how this song means so deeply to so many others.
AN ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING AND BEAUTIFUL SONG,.. IT MAKES ME JUST CLOSE MY EYES AND GO BACK TO MY JUNIOR YEAR, THE BEST YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL ('11-2012). IT BRINGS BACK SO MUCH EMOTIONS, I CAN LISTEN TO THIS SONG FOREVER.
i almost never comment on things, especially on how good bands are, even though i listen to a lot of music. i just cant take it anymore. you guys are the reason i bought an instrument and am interested in learning music. you guys are an inspiration, and top-class band. i love every song you guys make, and am very eagerly awaiting to listen to anything you guys come out with. i want more!!!
[Intro] Five days Underwater Near your island Off the coast, I know Five ways You were my lover Incantation Of the tide in rhyme [Verse] Oh All in the glow of fire, you're waiting Oh Has it been so long now? Ah-ah ah Oh I thought you knew that I'd be coming The way you move, a foreign groove At night, I could never I could never hold you... [Chorus] Watch it rise up where you hide Your pearls Feel it pile up where you cast Those stones you wear When no one's home Do they feel cold on your bones All the years I miss your warmth Have you missed my warmth? On your island, oh... [Outro] Ooh-ooh ooh ooh, ooh-ooh ooh ooh ooh-ooh Ooh-ooh ooh ooh, ooh-ooh ooh ooh ooh-ooh Ooh-ooh ooh ooh, ooh-ooh ooh ooh ooh-ooh Ooh-ooh ooh ooh, ooh-ooh ooh ooh ooh-ooh...
I lived this song for a solid six months of my life. When I woke up in the morning until I laid my head to rest at night, the song remained on a permanent loop in my brain. I've seen YTG in concert five times, always waiting for them to play this, my favorite song. My song. The last time I saw them live, it was about forty five minutes into their set and I had already abandoned the hope that they would play it. And then....they did! Miraculously, they did! And my heart simultaneously sank and exploded in my chest. It meant everything. To this day this is still my favorite song of theirs. I still listen, just a few thousand feet from the Atlantic.
This is by far my absolute favourite song ever. I also really enjoy these open sessions, so much so that I was a little disappointed with the album versions...just a little.
When he said i could never hold you it made me cry because we all have tht special someone or something we'll never be able to hold again. Thumbs up if you feel youll never let go even though you cant hold
don´t know how to say, a band that makes you smile, cry, think about life, your everyday life, your feelings, think about the other as yourself... I´m a better person today. after knowing this band. yes, music IS the language of the angels. thank god for young the giant, as posted really touching, intense, and true. pure love..
I used to listen to this and watch this all the time in high school. I think this is definitely their best open session, it is my favorite. So beautiful.
There's something majestic the way that bird at the ending of the song is staring out into the ocean. He's probably connected more thann we could know.
Their music and the places they shoot their live videos is pure art. The soulful crooning and the mellow sunset is the perfect combination. Cannot wait to see them live this weekend
No offense. But you should try to catch the same feeling as in this song again. This really reaches deep into the soul. The new songs aren't as emotional as this... it's difficult to explain it. Needless to say, I love this song.
yeah, you are probably right but... I mean, how difficult can be to express that emotionallity in everything you do? getting the right lyrics and the right words? plus adding the melody and making it a perfect mix...? Also the moments we go through in life can completely change our perspective on things and also, the way we want to express those feeling out of our shells... That's why albums are different to each other... because we are different as well... every year we are different.. I dont know, it also makes me think on the RIGHT moment to listen to a song.. because I have been listening to them since the first album, but this song didnt get me completely until yesterday.... I mean, this is very complex and makes me think... is it us reacting to any specific song in a different way depending on the state we are living in? Does it depend on our mood? Is the mix of our energy and the vibration of the song? The message contained is waiting for us to get to it? Because I can tell you that for me, the last lines are so on point for the moment Im living in right now... I dont know. Sorry about the digressing ... lol ... music makes this to me with the right songs... every single time...

"Counting Stars" is the name of the song. Sry im a Onerepublic and Young The Giant fan. ( I was a fan of onerepublic before they got more pop ) I hate that all the good bands are going pop Coldplay, Onerepublic, Imagine Dragons ( a little ).

This is honestly better than the original, and thats really saying something, cuz the original is gold
Then that's platinum, or maybe diamond certified?
@@holycabrol5860 glad to be 200th like
They need to do a "In The Open" under the rain. The sound of rain in the background... it would be perfect.
Download the RainyMood app and you can play the sounds of rain and/or waves over this. I've had it for some time now and it makes everything better. It's free too!
Amerika ? or Titus was born ? Sounds good.
Titus was Born for sure in the rain! Great idea.
You're right! Good thing this one has the waves, so soothing
How was this 11 years ago? One of the most beautiful open sessions song.
I dedicated this song to my old bestfriend, from about 10 years ago. He died in a car crash right before his first daughter was born. This is a beautiful song to dedicate to someone.
Bless you 🤍

I was in the middle of listening to this, when my brother called to tell me our mother had passed away. Every time I hear it, I’m reminded of her. Far away on her “island”
years go by and i still find myself coming back to this video

HIS VOICE. No one like him.
I still shiver every time I hear this song because it's just that good.
444 ❤ may you continue to shine your light in this world and be blessed. I feel the same way about this song
There's just something about this song that touches me on a deeper level than most music. It's an awe-inspiring feeling and it makes this one of my favorite songs of all time and that will never change.
I suddenly remembered this song and I have been searching the whole internet. I'm crying so much this is so powerful
i will never get over the fact that i got to witness an in the open version of this song at their last edmonton show, absolutely life-changing
It may be criminal to choose a favorite out of all the "in the open" sessions but this still remains my favorite after all these years.
Still coming back to it today :)
one of the most talented vocalist right now and band as well :)
This song is like melting butter on a crisp piece of toast and I love it to death. XD
This song it's INCREDIBLE. ♥
Still as beautiful as the day I first heard it
His voice is so haunting and beautiful.
i’d die for every in the open to be on spotify. 😪
01:20 "Oh, I thought you knew that I'd be coming"
Dedicating this to my friend, Gev, who sadly passed away in 2021.
May her soul gently rest in peace.
they are just so angelic golly.
I love this song from the bottom of my heart
This song is mesmerisingly beautiful
I could listen to this for a million years.
I still return to this song.

I can't believe this is the first song I ever heard from them in 2011 and seeing them live last Friday At the Hammerstein , hooked since the start. Real talent .
Still captivating all these years later.
Maybe I'm just hearing this wrong, but the lyrics I'm hearing is:
Five days
Underwater
Near your island
Off the coast
Oh no
Five ways
You were my lover
Incantations
Of the tide
In rhyme
Oh out in the glow I'll find you waiting
Oh has it been so long now
Oh I thought you knew that I'd be coming
The way you move
A foreign groove at night
I could never
I could never hold you
Watch it rise up
Where you hide your pearls
Feel it pile up
Where you cast those stones you wear
When no one's home
Do they feel cold on your bones
All the years I've missed your warmth
Have you missed my warmth?
On your island
Island
it is so annoying that everywhere is the wrong lyric, even THEY post the wrong one, and i was always struggling to hear out those words but never could. I'm happy i found this version because it's clear now what exactly he is saying.

the amazing thing is that the sound of nature becomes part of the song
This Open Session just makes me feel one with music, nature and humanity. NEVER gets old.
I've seen them three times. I never miss them when they come to my town. I almost missed them the last time I saw them, in late August. "1, 2, 3, 4, - 5 days under water, near your island, off the coast..." timing and lyrics harmoniously, how perfect.
After so many years this song still hits my soul
if you just sit back and read their lyrics, it's the best poetry
This song is a time capsule. You all know what I mean.
Probably the coolest thing I've ever seen

[Intro]
Five days
Underwater
Near your island
Off the coast, I know
Five ways
You were my lover
Incantation
Of the tide in rhyme
[Verse]
Oh
All in the glow of fire, you're waiting
Oh
Has it been so long now? Ah-ah ah
Oh
I thought you knew that I'd be coming
The way you move, a foreign groove
At night, I could never
I could never hold you...
[Chorus]
Watch it rise up where you hide
Your pearls
Feel it pile up where you cast
Those stones you wear
When no one's home
Do they feel cold on your bones
All the years I miss your warmth
Have you missed my warmth?
On your island, oh...

+Lily Not a huge fan of their 2nd album. This is definitely the best version of this song though.
Home of the strange and Mind Over Matter were both amazing, but their first album is definitly their best
I don't know. I found Elsewhere by itself to be rather complex and beautiful. I'm especially fond of the Bowie-like tones he hits in it.

I never saw it that way! I saw it as Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid.
This rendition of Islands is absolutely my favorite YtG song. Breaks me down every time.
this song makes me want to cry, but i don't feel like crying so...
HAHHAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHh
