Canon MF656CDw Color Laser All In One Printer Unboxing and Real Review

- Today on Real Reviews we will be unboxing and reviewing my new printer, the Canon MF656CDw Color Laser All In One. I picked this printer up on sale for around $300 and it has been good to me so far. The print quality is good and the speed is acceptable. I really like that you can print, scan and copy all on the one unit.
The only issue I see is that the replacement factory cartridges can be expensive. However, aftermarket versions are available for much less. Just be aware that if you do decide to get an aftermarket cartridge set be sure they have the Smart Chips so they will not give any counterfeit error and will be able to display the ink levels. I have not tried any as of yet, however I did find a set on Amazon with the Smart Chip for a reasonable price so I will leave a link to both that set and the printer below. Just be aware that since I have not yet tested this cartridge set I can not comment on the quality. Please do your research.
Thank you for watching.

Thanks for the review! Beware of aftermarket toner cartridges!!! I have a MF642CDW that has worked PERFECTLY for four years. However the last non-OEM toner I bought ruined it because of massive toner leakage. The local Canon dealer said the ITB will need replacing because it damaged the wiper blade. Cost to repair is same as purchase price of a new printer. So I will likely buy the 656 model. I absolutely loved my older printer and have learned my lesson. Only original OEM cartridges for me from now on.
Wow, sorry to hear that. Thank you for letting us know. Once my toner gets low, I will be reviewing an aftermarket set. Then we can see what happens 1st hand. I plan on getting some decent quality cartridges with the Smart Chip. This video may be in the next few months.
@@lindam.4678 Yes that is what I heard too. It's a shame they charge so much for the OEM.
Can you use aftermarket toner with black and white laser printers and if it spells their won't be a problem because they don't have TB(transfer belts) like color Lazer printer.
@@9to5techs To be totally honest I am not really sure. I have used aftermarket toner in the past, both cartrideges and the powder toner refills on the original cartridges. With the powder toner refills the color seemed to be much closer or just as good as the originals. But with the aftermarket the colors were very muted and not as bright or sharp. Then after a while with the aftermarket the yellow toner began to spill out somehow and ruined my last Ricoh laser printer. It was however the cheapest set I could find. Factory is your best bet but the price is over the top at like $100 per cartridge. When my toner runs out I will probably just look for a deal on a new printer or attempt to refill the old ones myself if it's not too tough. And they wonder why land fills are so full. Who's fault is that really?
Pls how much is these printer
Fantastic review thank you. I sat at I Windows 11 computer struggling on how to get a print but when I came here you showed me the Android app and all my fears were rested because at least I cooked the print straight off on network using that app.
Also your advice on using Canon paper will save us a lot of money with repairs so thank you again, and keep the good work👍👍👍
Great unboxing/review. Very thorough. Thank you for taking the time to record.
I appreciate your kind comment. Thanks for watching.
No problem. Thanks for watching.
That extra piece of plastic is called a legal dust cover. You were close but you didn't quite install it properly. To the right of the lever you moved, there is another lever that expands the tray to full legal size. THEN the dust cover goes on and it will fit properly. I had to google this to find it. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
Wow great. Thank you for letting me know. The way they described it did not make sense. I will definitely check it out.
Thank you for reviewing this printer! I watched your video and found just what I needed to set mine up. : )
@@barbaradixon3970 No problem and just an FYI, when you turn on the printer give it about 60 seconds then open the app or attempt to connect to it. For some reason at least mine takes this time to get the wifi going.
Thank you for the print and photocopy samples!
Hi there, how are you finding the scanning functionality? Scan to email/Google Drive, or OCR? Would be great to know. What made you choose this one over something like MF754Cdw for example? Thanks so much.
I honestly only purchased the printer for light printing and scanning to and from Android devices and PC. I have found it rather simple to use via the provided software. As far as scan to email, Google drive and OCR I have not tried as I generally do not use those. I chose this particular model since it was on sale at Staples and I had a decent store credit about to expire. I only paid about $100 for this unit out of pocket and am happy with it so far.
@@Real_Reviews For your own needs this printer is an overkill
Great review! Thanks...

That off-white plastic part could be a tray cover to be used when printing on legal paper. I have a Canon imageCLASS MF733Cdw since 2018 and it is going strong. I wish to advise you that glossy paper is not for laser printers. The toner in the printer is thermal-heated onto the paper, and glossy paper would likely melt and mar that paper inside a laser printer. Glossy paper is appropriate to use with ink printers. I use laser paper because it is bright and does not have a "show through" effect as the case of bond or copier paper. Also, laser paper holds toner so well that documents and files appear with typeset quality. Last year, I made smart purchases on toner. I purchased Canon high-capacity toner in two supplies of all four colors. In my case, I do not print a lot of documents daily, but there were few occasions that I printed at least 50 copies in one run, and still had toner to spare. Therefore, I needed NOT to buy [third-party] toner; brands that I never saw in my life. I am an avid typist who does document printing in the privacy of my home, and am a fan of microcomputer technology. This is a way I try to advise you with some surefire tips. You still have my 587 Like. 🖥🖨
most excellent review. Im looking for a new printer and thought that the smart tank printer for inkjets would be a great idea. I found out that that is wrong. So now I looking at laser printers. Your video was very, very helpful. Im in Florida too. I hope there is a printer laser color without a fax. If not I'll be getting this one. T Y
Hi, and thank you for watching. Yes, there are several laser printers without the fax feature. I am not planning to use that either, but I do like the 50 sheet auto loader on top that tends to come with the all-in-one printers. It is great for scanning documents and pictures in bulk.
Watched this to figure out how to put it back in the box. Was informed that this would handle all types of thick paper, but it would not print very well on glossy. Then when trouble shooting, Cannon said it doesn't print on glossy, but there was no indication of this on the specs page. Since Canon makes high-res cameras, why did they not make this high-res printer for glossy photo and brochure printing?
@living4ever My thoughts exactly as I mentioned in the video, but it is still a good printer. According to what I read, no laser printers at least in the at home and small office range truly support glossy.
@@Real_Reviews 20 years ago, I owned a Photography and Directory business. I leased 2 different Xerox laser printers, one being a Doc6, which handled all types of glossy and coated paper, all the up to 120lb card stock coated double-sided; there were no streaks or runs, and it printed in 600x600 resolution. This Canon printer had a standard 1200x1200 resolution, and printed well on plain paper, with outstanding image quality. I also own many Canon cameras.; one would think that a company that makes cameras would understand that their customers might want to print an image on glossy paper - not photographic quality paper, but semi-gloss papers which are used for 50% of brochure paper like I needed.
I reviewed the new Xerox comparable home office printers also, and they all print on the same glossy media, but with a printer price of $330 and toner cost of $1100 for 4, plus other purchases of replacement parts - no thanks!
After 20 years of progressive printer imaging design, I thought all laser printers would be able to handle glossy papers and have a standard 1200x1200 resolution or more. But it seems, that printers have descended in media printing capabilities for lasers.
I ended up buying an inkjet Epson Ecotank which prints on glossy media and has a standard resolution of 1440x5000+ DPI. Let me know if you want me to list the results here for comparison?
Comeon you cant use a Laser Printer for printing photos! That’s common Knowledge! Canon does produce high-res printers for glossy printers: Their Inkjet imagePROGRAF line. They are great! Might also look at the Epson Ecotank Photo series, for printing images very cheaply.
@@axgrf I agree! I didn't buy it to print "photos;" I bought it to print brochures with images on them for semi-gloss paper. I use a specialty printing company to print masses of brochures that are folded many different ways, but I needed a way to print a few test samples before they printed thousands. The Canon would not print on semi-gloss, but I ended up the Ecotank, which has a resolution of 1400x5000+ DPI. They are stunning brochure samples, but it takes 30 seconds to print one. 15 years ago, I leased a Xerox Laser printer, and it printed photos on all types of glossy paper with zero problems. Even the $300 Xerox printers print on all types of glossy, but their toner replacements are $1100. (yikes)
@living4ever Wow, $1100 toner replacement on a $300 printer. I mean it's definitely cool that it supports glossy paper.
Thanks for the review!
No problem. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the review, but will it accept glossy paper?
16:48 He talks about it, sadly laser printers can't print on any glossy paper. Closest you'll get to "glossy" is some unsatisfying textured paper you can buy. That's the sad reality, I love laser printers but they just fail at that one crucial aspect for which most people want to own a printer.
@@hugrid9647 Oh i didn't pay attention there, thank you.
The answer is "no." Glossy paper is for ink printers such as inkjet and ink tank models. Laser printers use non-glossy paper. Glossy paper needs no heat as that inside laser printers. Laser printers were made to print documents and files made in business productivity with typesetting quality. Light graphics are added to some business documents. Glossy paper is used in photographic work and creative art.
@@hugrid9647 The inability of laser printers not being able to print glossy paper is not sad. There are many kinds of printers for various kinds of jobs just like there are different kinds of [micro]computers for all kinds of purposes. Laser printers were made for business offices to print many kinds of documents and files in business setting. Office firms would prefer to have their documents and files appear with typeset quality that brings a professional polish. Ink printers, and ink tank printers made today, are made to produce high-quality, artisitic-looking photographs and artwork that were not intended for laser printers. Ink printers use liquid ink that needs no thermal heat.
Very cool. Have a like.
Great Printer for $299. If you buy the Cannon print cartridges' expect to pay over $500 !
I know. Laser cartridges are not cheap. But I can't go back to inkjet.
Great unboxing/review. Very thorough ! REALLY enjoyed it... btw, can you please let me know what is your tablet at the beginning? and what's cover on it? thanks a lot

I cannot figure out how to get my printer to stop printing in greyscale. Please help all my printed documents are coming out so light, cannot for the life of me figure out how to turn off this feature. Please help!
@ckpiers1 Check in the print menu when you choose print where you should be able to select color or grayscale. You can also open printer properties if using a computer and select preference where you should find a color mode drop down. Then just choose color or automatic.
thank you..can you use a flash drive to copy picture fron you phone or andriod have a blessed day

Had mine for 2 days. Got it setup to scan to a network drive, or email. Does not like Avery Business Card Stock.
The plastic piece goes on the back over the paper tray if using legal paper.
Yes, I did finally figure out that piece. I do need to try more features on it. One thing I do know is that I continue to be impressed by the print quality and really enjoy printing on mine.. As far as the business cards, I just checked the spported paper types on the Canon site and did not see business cards listed. I don't know if it would actually specify that or just paper thickness. how is the printer after 10 months? any issues with it?
Mt main issue with the printer is that it takes a few minutes after you turn it on to show online. Besides that it's great. But that can be frustrating when you are in a rush.
@@Real_Reviews It can't be left turned on?
It can be left on standby, but I don't use it every day, so I turn it off.

If you intend to print such labels on a laser printer, ensure that the amount labels on each sheet equals to those files in your [database] file.

Maybe I missed it but what is the slot/feeder above the paper tray? I have this printer and when I push a sheet of paper inside the slot/feeder the printer will push it in.
is there a port in the rear to hook the printer directly to the computer via a cable?
@mswik3384 Yes, you can directly connect from the printer to a USB port.
I live in the U.K. and have been thinking about this printer, the print quality looks great. I don’t know is it’s the same over in the states but here in the U.K. the toner cartridges for this printer are very expensive, and that putting me off buying it. I’ve been looking at the Xerox C315 A4 Colour Printer, which has a cost per page about half of this printer, but I need to find out what the print quality is like…..having said all that I might still go for the Canon as my print volumes are not that high.
To be honest I originally only got this printer because it was on sale and I had almost $200 in store credit that was about to expire. I did not expect much I just hoped it was better than my Ricoh. But when I printed that 1st page I was very happy I got it. Original toner is about the same price for both coming in around $100 per cartridge. If you decide on aftermarket toner the quality may be a bit lower. For the Canon if your looking aftermarket be sure to get a set that includes the smart chip so you wont have any issues. Best of luck.
@@Real_Reviewsgood info dude… I’m having MF643 cdw …but toner price is expensive…looking for alternatives as you said with chip toner… what’s brand that’s is good budget price… to cut the cost…kindly make a video on that …thanks 🙏
@rufdymond I can tell you it prints great, but the toner is prohibitive. Check out some reviews on Xerox, and maybe it's better than you think. If you happen to purchase, please let us know how you like it.
@winvishnu I have to look into the smart cartridges again. There was a company I was going to use when I needed replacements but mine have held out really well since I don't print so much.
@@Real_Reviews thanks foryour quick update dude - LEMERO SUPERX brand for the alternative with the chip..or others..pls let us know...my color cartridge all over only black with 20%...
Thanks for the video. I had a kid haul it and set it up. Is it the blue cord that goes into the taped area that says wait until down load info? I also gather I need to use my cell phone and find an app ?
Hi, you are welcome, and thank you for watching. It all depends on how you plan to connect it. If wireless, then just connect it to your wifi network. If wired, you would use what looks like a large phone jack. Then you need to install the 2 softwares I show in the video. Happy printing!
Does this printer buzz or hum loud when on wake? The 752 /753 /754 are extremely noisy unless only in sleep. Unusable if you sit by it, I’m getting headaches.
It is silent unless booting up, waking up, or printing. Then it does click and hum.
Does anyone know if Canon i-SENSYS MF655Cdw can be used with G&G CRG-045H compatible toner cartridges because I found such information on some websites? They are much less expensive than CRG-067H and it would be nice if it is possible.
When are you dropping the aftermarket toner comparison?
I am still waiting for a quality product to emerge with the smart chip at a reasonable cost. The one I had originally did not have the smart chip, and several reported that the cartridge leaked and damaged their printer. I do apologize for the delay. The smart chip is a newer technology, and it takes time for the aftermarket industry to catch up. As soon as I find a good one, I will review it.
Great thanks for the info. I just ordered this printer from Best Buy but seems like it will take some time for any reputable replacement toners… this is my first laser printer 🤞
@@alexborrego8051 I hope you like it as much as we do. I have had a couple of color laser printers before and this one is by far the best with the most features. Let us know how you like it.

there is special photo paper for laser printers, you don't use photo paper for ink printers. it is the same paper used in magazines
Yes, there is. However, this printer does not support any type of glossy paper, even if it claims to be for laser. That is according to Canon's technical support team. If you use any glossy paper and it damages your printer, it will void your warranty.
Which special type photo paper for laser printer, can you please leave a link :)

Glossy laser paper does exist like brochure and flyer paper, but I'm not sure if Canon has glossy laser paper.
According to Canon regarding this particular printer, using glossy paper will void your warranty. Supposedly, no laser printer is designed to work with glossy paper due to the way it works.
@@Real_Reviews HP makes glossy paper specifically for their laser printers. Most brochure and flyer paper is also glossy. It seems like Canon only allows their higher end commercial printers to allow glossy paper.
