Each season has a distinct theme according to the show runners. Season 1 is basically a detective show with a mystery that is investigated. I really like the sci-fi neo noir of season 1. The debris field is what was left of the Canterbury propelled through space by the force of the nuclear detonation that destroyed the Cant. In "The Expanse," physics is both a plot element and an antagonist.
A subtle thing the show did by destroying The Canterbury was removing "plot armor" from the cast. They built up all those characters on the crew, then killed them. Now, in the back of your brain, dangerous situations have more concrete consequences. The threats are more real. Our plucky heroes may not make it out safely at the last second. 😲
Eh, not really. Being a Lone Survivor doesn't preclude plot armor at all, and part of an episode isn't much buildup at all. Expanse main characters have pretty good survivability overall, though we do get a few deaths when Dramatically Appropriate. And also the one guy who died because his player left the campaign. The series has some rich world building going on. They drop you in the middle of the world without a guidebook. Be prepared to stick a bunch of pins in things to come back to later as the details get revealed. If you like uncovering mysteries - this is a target rich environment.
The Expanse has a Filoni-style slow burn start. You get a lot of information about the players and what some of the essential plots are, then the characters get deeper and the show can finally take off, pun intended.
Remember the Cant! I figured you would be a belter fan. Hold on this is going to be a ride. The actor that plays Amos talks about his inspiration for the character and how he talked to psychologist about people on the autism spectrum and how they would function in a high stress environment. Keep your mind open. This is going to be fun.
Really enjoying your reactions! You're doing a great job analyzing, just remember they only show you what they want you to know. You're asking good questions and I promise you answers are coming! Please stick with it! I promise you want regret it! No the Cantebury isn't our " Enterprise ", Can't say more without spoilers so hang in there! Can't wait for the next one!
The first couple episodes, I had so many questions, and I just wanted multiple episodes of pure worldbuilding and exposition to let me know everything about everything before the plot began. But having watched the whole series, and really just after the first season, I was able to look back at the beginning and understand why they did it this way, and I appreciate it much more how they gave answers more slowly. The show does a lot of cliffhangers and it's much more of a scifi thriller than a pure scifi show. But The Expanse does reward you for sticking with it, and letting things get revealed over time. It also rewards you if you pay very careful attention to the little clues it does give you bit by bit early on. The payoffs are incredible.
The pace is a bit slow for the first few episodes but I feel like the general consensus from people I know is that it picks up very bigly. I'm glad one of my favourite reactors is reacting to one of my favourite shows though 🙂
Unfortunately, 1x2 is probably the slowest episode out of the entire series :( But it is all up from here, and fairly rapidly :) I do hope you continue, because I have been enjoying your reaction immensely, witty and enagaging.
The ep does something important. It establishes that air and water are precious and that space is fucking LETHAL. Just beyond that thin sheet of hull metal is death.
At least 2 friends of mine stoped the series in 1X02 ..wich deeply offends me considering other stuff they watched back to back wich is like a magnitude less quality.. 1X02 is slow but even so when i rewatch it its still full of interesting info here and there

I can tell by your analysis before and after each episode that you're actually paying attention and trying to understand what's going on. I definitely can't wait for more!
It is a slow start, but there is so much information that will be important later. It is beautifully crafted, and later on you’ll go ‘Oh! Now I get it’ Amos became one of my favourite characters, I can’t wait to watch you discover all the crew’s stories.
Yay! Click on this soooo fast. Great to have a huge fan of scifi watching this.. Also - you are one of the only reactors I've seen who got all the names right on first viewing of the first episode! I am very much looking forward to you watching my favourite series!
Glad you're sticking with it, it's well worth the time investment. This show has some of the best written strong female characters in recent years. I mean every character is very well rounded, but they really did a great job of demonstrating the various ways a character can be strong. With regards to how the story is being told, it will vary from season to season. Because it's based on books, some questions won't be answered for a couple of seasons. The first book is a noir detective story in space, so the mystery of Julie Mao plays the central role. It will hook you, and when it does, be prepared.
I bet 90% of the people who watched the show found the first episodes kinda slow and not all that gripping. After you get over that hump, the ride keeps getting crazier and crazier.
When I first started watching it and it was still a syfy show I was definitely pretty meh about it for the first few episodes given that syfy don't exactly have high, or any standards
I never felt that way. I always thought it was well paced. And on second watch, it is fairly dense with info. Never understood what everybody was on about the first episodes.
Everyone I recommend this show to I tell them this: "stick it out until you see nukes flying or until you meet the Martians" The first few episodes take a good long time to world build 😀
I love long showers too.. but in many places on Earth you already can't take long showers and that is spreading. Fresh water is getting more and more scarce. So, soon we will have to learn to live with short showers on Earth.. preparing us for a life in space.
It seems from the comments below that people vary greatly in which specific episode really grabbed them and spiraled them down the rabbit hole for good. For me it was Episode 3, but you kinda get the idea that the show is slow burning on purpose, no need to worry tho... very quickly in the first season for sure, you will come to an episode that will hard hook you as a fan that can't wait to watch each next installment. This is a show that was definitely done right, and viewers sing it's praises with good reason. Enjoying your reaction!
The OPA terrorist was on a ship traveling to the Moon, but the acceleration of the ship was very high, people use drugs to decrease the impact of acceleration, they weren’t torturing him at that time. Julie was still on the ship, but they ran away from the ship so quickly, they didn’t see Julie.
As others have said, you’re doing a great job picking up on what’s going on!!! It is a lot of seemingly confusing information & you will have many questions (but you are asking a lot of the right ones!) Your questions will be answered (& then replaced with new ones!) They do a really good job in this show of showing that most people are not completely good- or completely bad- they are doing what they think is right for their people / group which, if we are honest, is how most humans operate. Glad you are sticking with it - & once this show gets really gets rolling… hang on!! I’ve just Subscribed & I know We (insert fan group name to be shared later) welcome you! - love watching people discover this wonderful show!! 🚀
As far as questions...your head is going to be spinning quite a bit until probably episode 9. Even after that The Expanse is good for having you ask questions that they will definitely answer. They're going to answer things you're not even thinking about and may not even catch on this first watch through of yours.
At first didn't notice it but on my 2 or 3 rewatch noticed that you can see Heikee Sobong's bones cracking thru his arm when he avoided the high G injection to kill himself
It took me a while to get into the show too. I actually quit and tried again a couple years later. Glad I did because, once I did I was hooked for life. Love the books too.
Not the Kelvin reference! :) Oh man, a fellow sci-fi nerd from my generation! (Also, I know you don't like spoilers, so just let me say that the pace of the show changes soon.)
Everything you said in your introduction makes me so excited for your journey! This show, as I'm sure you've read "does not hold your hand", and your attempts at understanding what's going to happen will always be obliterated. Lol You are exactly where every one else is at this point. And everyone loves the voyage in the end!
Oh, you're gripped. Your head is filling with theories and what ifs. You need to know what happens next. This show will keep doing that to you. Keep asking all these questions. It is fun to see your questions...especially since Marie and I were asking the SAME questions...and we now KNOW everything. Love it. Marie's favourite character is Naomi (especially at this point in the show). My favourite character is James Holden. Yes, I know...he's emotional, but I love his passion. The other surviving crew members of The Canterbery, Amos, Shed and Alex. We really love their dynamic. You will learn more about them, don't worry. BIG question, who are the bad guys? The Martians,? The Belters,? Earthers? Who made the stealth tech and for what purpose? Chrisjen Avasarala and Sadavir Errinwright are movers and shakers in the United Nations government of Earth. It is interesting to see what each of them is willing to do...for Earth. The Belters plight...they live on the brink of disaster. Like you said, one shipment late...riots, two shipments lates death. A perilous situation to be in. Learning more of the Belter psyche and why they do what they do. Detective Miller seems to be compitent, but also a little shady. Love how Thomas Jane plays this character. I do hope that you continue to watch this show. It keeps getting getting better, episode by episode and even more so, season by season. AND, yes, space is a trecherous environment...always close to killing humanity. The debri from the Scopuli...made a mess of the little craft that they were on. Unlike in Star Trek...there are no ray shields. It just takes a stray object going fast...to mess up your day. The Donneger is the Flagship of the MCRN (Mars Congressional Republic Navy). Cannot wait to see your reaction with next week's episode. Ugh. Wish these reactions were closer together. You are killing us. JK We are having a LOT of fun watching your reactions. We have seen SO many reactions of this show...and almost everyone of them is near the same. Asking the same questions. BTW, this is the show that we've gathered a lot of friends from. It has almost a cult following on social media. In fact, the show was saved and bought by Amazon BECAUSE of the love so MANY loyal fans...that even Jeff Bezos became a fan...and brought is back from being cancelled by SyFi Network. So, the writiers, the production staff, the directors, cast and crew became very socially connected with the fans. Once you get far enough...there are lots of Official Podcasts done by one of the authors and one of the cast. It is amazing how much this show is loved by pretty much everyone. Until your next drop...we hope that you have a WONDERFUL day.
This is what this series does better then any sci-fi work out there: Space/Physics itself is a character, not only it has such a big effect on the Belter's culture but its gonna effect so much of the plot and story. Love this show
First, thanks for your honest opinions on the hat--too many people just ignore that abomination! ☺ Second, yes, the first few episodes are slow because of all the world-building, but things _definitely_ start to heat up soon! Right now, they're just want to make sure you know that space is scary! (I think you picked up on that!) 😉 Pointless trivia: Ceres is the asteroid that was famously promoted to "dwarf planet" at the same time that Pluto was _de_moted to that status.
Our current knowledge about Ceres is that it is the largest object within the asteroid belt, and that its surface is covered with ice, and not just a dusting of it, but a very thick covering. That rabble-rouser on Ceres, speaking with his Belter Creole accent, mentions that Earth and Mars stripped all of that ice from Ceres. It is not explained why they did so, but one of the consequences is that the people who setttled on Ceres then had to acquire ice from other sources and live under water rationing even in the best of times.
Amos will become your most beloved sociopath…and trust us, you need to invest in the world building early on for the payoffs down the road when the story completely takes off
Everyone commenting on these reactions. Please be careful talking about future episodes, even if it is just saying things like,"the next episode is great" or 'my favorite '. This reactor considers these things spoilers. Also describing character's arcs, could also be considered spoilers. Please let her discover these things on her own. That's what makes it genuine. Thanks
Amos is a self-aware sociopath. He knows he doesn't have the tools to make right/wrong decisions (the reasons are explained later in the show) and he uses Naomi's sense of right and wrong as a touchstone. He doesn't like or dislike Holden (or anyone),
The show really doesn't get going until episodes 3-4...then there's another slow down until episode 8. Once you get to episode 8; I can assure you your seat is going to be damaged from all the "hanging on to your seat" you're going to be doing, the jaw dropping, big eyes, and chest clutching.
Hang in there! I stopped after this episode because I wasn't following it and there didn't seem to be any characters for me to like. I tried again when Amazon picked up the show for a 4th season and I think it was the 4th episode that I got on board. The wrench was a goof by the team as yeah, it wouldn't fly out of his hand unless something knocked it out. They've acknowledged that. Amos is really an interesting character and Jim is a passionate kinda guy. Naomi is pretty fun too. The Donnanger is a big ship. All the ships are built like office buildings because of thrust gravity.
Rewatching the first season for me is a mixed bag. I love the show but I see what a slow burn it was. Every episode gets better and every season gets better. This is a book series that was such a joy to see come to the small screen.
have to agree when i first watched this show as it aired i missed a fair bit of info and found it slow but when i got to the end of season 3 the first thing i did was go back and absorb as much as i could from the start. the story truly gets better and better, consider the slow start the beginning of a crescendo that ultimately pays off. just gotta stick with it, it may be slow to hook you but when it does you'll likely love it.
I don't understand how you can call S1 slow when they already blew up the Cant in E1. I also was hooked from that moment. Though I have to admit it took a while to connect to the characters.
Not refering specifically to this reactor: nowadays lots of people are action/adrenaline junkies. If explosions and pew pew pew are missing people complain being bored. It´s easy, stuff just happened, there´s no need to think. Short attention spans maybe? There´s merit and stuff to be appreciated in action but also in slow character and/or plot development.
You will get the best space battles of any show. And emotional moments. Nobody is who they seem to be here, it’s intentional that no character is easy to read at first. The expanse is also known as Cliffhanger: the series, just give it time.
Personally, I found the show to be very slow in the beginning and I wasn't fully hooked until about maybe episode 8 or so. However, season 2 gripped me right away. The 2nd half of season 2 and season 3 are off-the-charts fantastic, IMHO.
lol royal pains was a guilty pleasure for me. Paulo Costanzo was a lot of fun to watch in that series. The expanse is great definitely worth sticking with. The realism helps make the more science fiction elements of the show believable.
Jim Holden grew up on Earth and likes coffee, however, out in the Belt just about everything is made using fungi, so people wind up using any hack they can to make it taste more like "the real thing."
You understand space just fine, the way the wrench fell off was one of the producers rare physics mistakes :) which they have coped to with some embarrassment.
The wrench flying away was a mistake. That would have worked if the ship was under thrust, but you wouldn't be thrusting while working outside the ship. They didn't catch the mistake untill they were too far into post production of the ep so they left it in. Because of this, the FX team did a crash course in physics and orbital mechanics. They got so good at it that they would sometimes correct the writers later I n the series. Because they left the mistake in, the wrench makes an appearance once each season as both an Easter egg and a reminder.
"It's not our Enterprise, it's our.. Kelvin." 🤣 A perfectly on point observation! Except instead of an Enterprise, we end of up with a Defiant.. An independent ship and a legitimate salvage. 👌😁
That tank interrogation scene. You'll get the answers, but oh my do they make you wait. You can put that up on a shelf for a few seasons, like lots of stuff that you see in the first few episodes, and take it down and look at 8t from time to time when you get little references to it along the way. I get the impression, from the first couple of reactions, that you are gonna absolutely love this when it really gets going. I know for sure that I'm gonna love watching you while you're doing it. Oh the theories and the questions. I promise, really, that you will get answers to all your questions...with more questions 🙂
I'm so glad you're watching this, but yeah, I wouldn't expect you to be into it just yet. It is a slow burn. Each episode will make you want a bit more, and by the end of the first season you should be fully onboard, and it only gets moreso from there :)
this is one of my all time favorite series and thats saying a lot as a Cinephile, and yes it does take some time to really get its footing but in reality it is more of a build up being that many details are important, i would suggest watching the series in two or three episode intervals as to not lose traction and makes the series more satisfactory along with intriguing of whats to come.
Oh sorry for spamming, you may have missed it in episode one but miller explains it in the bar to Havelock The spine thing is because belters bones don't fuse correctly because of cheap bone density drugs, for helping bones to grow in zero g
Great insights again! The show will make an effort to show you what being in space is really like, the dangers and the myths. The show opens with the line "all it will take is a single spark". Keep that in mind.
13:37 They look like they are still but there is no friction in space thus an object in motion will forever be in motion in it's last direction. They are moving. Let go of the tool and it flies away.
I'm guessing here but maybe the ship is still accelerating roughly with one g to simulate earths gravity. If that were the case then anything not fixed to the ship would "fall" down in the opposite direction of the force applied roughly at the same speed you'd expect something to fall down on earth. In general I love this show to bits exactly because, aside from very few creative liberties taken (like engines makings sound in the vacuum of space), it is very, very scientific accurate and grounded in real technologies. For example it doesn't have any kind of spooky Sci-Fi gravity generators, instead it entirely relies on known physical principles like centrifugal force or the above mentioned force applied to bodies when a ship accelerates. Fun fact: most ships in The Expanse are built in a way where the different levels of the ship are running perpendicular to the direction of the engine so they can walk on the ground while accelerating. Think like a house with the engine being in the basement (pointing down) and the ship accelerating towards the roof. However I understand that my love for such physical accuracies may not be everybodies thing. 😂
S1 of Expanse is a somewhat slow burn and a lot of world building but if one stick with it, one would be rewarded with one of the best written sci-fi for a long time plus a newfound knowledge and respect for real world physics and (at least for me) a profound love and appreciation of our mother earth because it's basically all kind of death out there. Oh the pace of the show after the world building is done, and by S3, one might go, "whoa show, slow the heck down" 😁
"All my theories just blown to shit in like 2 seconds"
The Expanse: "heh heh heh"
I love the juxtaposition of you being like "this place is so nice, is it because she's a rich girl?" and then the dad on the videomail basically calling it a dump.

The Expanse has a Filoni-style slow burn start. You get a lot of information about the players and what some of the essential plots are, then the characters get deeper and the show can finally take off, pun intended.
Nice comparison about Filoni!
This show is definitely mysterious and imo that's one of the things that makes it great. I can't wait to your reactions as it unfolds
You don't like Miller's hat? But it keeps the rain off his head!
I'm glad one of my favourite reactors is reacting to one of my favourite shows though 🙂
hehe..."I'm gonna grip onto him; he's my guy." Don't grip too hard. lol
@@rodentnolastname6612 True
It does feel a bit like a filler episode. One of slowest for sure, but it also does a little to flesh out the characters before the story gets going.
At least 2 friends of mine stoped the series in 1X02 ..wich deeply offends me considering other stuff they watched back to back wich is like a magnitude less quality.. 1X02 is slow but even so when i rewatch it its still full of interesting info here and there
@@rodentnolastname6612 its also an interesting episode to rewatch at certain point of the series much much later .. wont say why for spoilers until we get there
Running out of air in space is a definite concern. Getting your eyes sucked out of your head is not.
The series starts slow but give it time, it'll grow on you. This is such a great space action/drama!
I love the show and the books (I highly recommend the audiobooks btw) and I've seen quite a few reactions as I like to see what others think / differing views. I can tell by your analysis before and after each episode that you're actually paying attention and trying to understand what's going on. I definitely can't wait for more!
I love the complex, plausible Geopolitics/Spaciopolitics of this series. 👍👍👍
the thing about the expanse is every character is well written and well acted
3:33 Don"t like Miller's hat? Well, his haircut is even worse 😂
TRUTH
I really hope you continue with the show, it took me a few episodes in before I really started to enjoy it.
I didn't make it past episode two the first time I tried watching
When I first started watching it and it was still a syfy show I was definitely pretty meh about it for the first few episodes given that syfy don't exactly have high, or any standards
First episode was 🔥
I'm in the 10% that was hooked immediately...it helps that I enjoy world-building and taking time to establish characters.
I never felt that way. I always thought it was well paced. And on second watch, it is fairly dense with info. Never understood what everybody was on about the first episodes.
Yes, do use captions, at least for the first season.
And yes, Shed is a fan favorite character.
Everyone I recommend this show to I tell them this: "stick it out until you see nukes flying or until you meet the Martians"
The first few episodes take a good long time to world build 😀
I love long showers too.. but in many places on Earth you already can't take long showers and that is spreading. Fresh water is getting more and more scarce. So, soon we will have to learn to live with short showers on Earth.. preparing us for a life in space.
takes like 6-7 episodes to finnallly feel you're into it
Buckle up! You are in for one hell of A ride with this Show.
I like Miller's hat. In a show with very few flashing neon signs pointing to who's who and what's what you can always pick him out of a crowd.
When I heard "You are prisoners of the Mars Congressional Republic" I started reading the books.
Miller has a great hat. :)
It keeps the rain off his head.
It was obviously from the book and the book was trying to present the image of the private eye.
@@jsbrads1 Yup. and clearly Miller enjoyed projecting that persona.
As others have said, you’re doing a great job picking up on what’s going on!!!
It is a lot of seemingly confusing information & you will have many questions (but you are asking a lot of the right ones!) Your questions will be answered (& then replaced with new ones!)
They do a really good job in this show of showing that most people are not completely good- or completely bad- they are doing what they think is right for their people / group which, if we are honest, is how most humans operate.
Looking forward to the next 2. 3 & 4 tie together nicely.
JK
We are having a LOT of fun watching your reactions.
(I think you picked up on that!) 😉
Pointless trivia: Ceres is the asteroid that was famously promoted to "dwarf planet" at the same time that Pluto was _de_moted to that status.
Be patient. You'll find out...as the rest of us did...EVERYONE should have a friend like Amos.
Mars, in particular, took Ceres's water to aid in their Terraforming Project.
Naturally, the Belters were less than happy about it.
Amos will become your most beloved sociopath…and trust us, you need to invest in the world building early on for the payoffs down the road when the story completely takes off
15:40 like when I was a Teen and we had those massive tower deck top computers. When it messed up we just gave it a good swift kick. Worked everytime.
Keep staying with it.. you have no idea what you're in for! :)
Thanks
11:35 No, she said: Give him another ten hours! (In gravity torture.)
For sure you have to consider the start of the show an investment. That said on a re-watch it is very high quality even in the early episodes.
have to agree when i first watched this show as it aired i missed a fair bit of info and found it slow but when i got to the end of season 3 the first thing i did was go back and absorb as much as i could from the start. the story truly gets better and better, consider the slow start the beginning of a crescendo that ultimately pays off. just gotta stick with it, it may be slow to hook you but when it does you'll likely love it.
The pacing of the first two episodes IS slow. Pacing and plot are two different things.
You will get the best space battles of any show. And emotional moments. Nobody is who they seem to be here, it’s intentional that no character is easy to read at first. The expanse is also known as Cliffhanger: the series, just give it time.
Take the quiet start as time to work on your heart muscled you’ll need it for the cliffhanging ending episodes to come . . .
With readily available matchstick heads?
Fantastic character analysis and insight, once you get the world building out the way, I reckon you are SO gonna love this show. :D
He let the wrench go, while he and the ship continued moving.
You don't like his hat? But it keeps 🌧️ of his head 🤣
You understand space just fine, the way the wrench fell off was one of the producers rare physics mistakes :) which they have coped to with some embarrassment.
It was struck by a micrometeor or some other debris, that’s why you keep everything tied down.
This show will raise many questions, some will be answered minutes alter, others will require a long time to come to a conclusion.
Only Cad Bane can pull off the hat on scifi.
👏👏👏TRUTH👏👏👏
Episode 4 is usually the episode that hooks most reactors.
I can't wait for your reaction!
Spoiler Alert: I indeed got hooked because of episode 4!
Stick with it, it's SO rewarding.
uhoh "i want to see some space shit"... cant wait for the reaction when the first fight happens
this is one of my all time favorite series and thats saying a lot as a Cinephile, and yes it does take some time to really get its footing but in reality it is more of a build up being that many details are important, i would suggest watching the series in two or three episode intervals as to not lose traction and makes the series more satisfactory along with intriguing of whats to come.
Possibility of more gravity on Ceres: Gravity is created by spinning the asteroid, probably a limit to how fast they can make it spin.
Oh sorry for spamming, you may have missed it in episode one but miller explains it in the bar to Havelock
The spine thing is because belters bones don't fuse correctly because of cheap bone density drugs, for helping bones to grow in zero g
I agree with the other comments. It is a slow burn but well worth putting in the time
Great insights again! The show will make an effort to show you what being in space is really like, the dangers and the myths. The show opens with the line "all it will take is a single spark". Keep that in mind.
I eagerly await your reaction to episode 4. I say that with an evil grin. 8))
Available on Patreon midnight tomorrow 👀👀
The spanner is a mistake in the physics which is unusual in this show.
15:32 It's called percussive maintenance.
