Word has it that Dave Grohl recorded the drums with "air cymbals" then overdubbed the cymbal hits later on.
He did that with QOTSA but not Nirvana

@@TempoDrift1480 I believe it was something to do with the cymbals bleeding into the direct microphones, so they recorded them seperately
@@TempoDrift1480 you get much better track separation and potentially fewer phase issues.
It sounds pretty basic with hurried times fills to me. Check out LoveSpreads (Reni from Stone Roses) isolated for serious drum fills a la Keith Moon

No idea where this would come from if there wasn't some kind of filtering being done to separate them out from the retail releases. Studios don't just give away data like this.
