I still remember watching my firs episode of Knife banter with you and him, and you convinced me to by a Spyderco Roc cause you were both talking about cleaver blades! Seeing you both now, with you finishing up your new workspace, and Ben doing his own thing with the Knafs brand and the Lander, it's so awesome to see you guys doing your own things! What a reunion! I haven’t had so much fun watching a knife video in a long time. The honest, thoughtful, and nuanced conversation is much appreciated. Banter on!
But what I’m really here for is to ask the question your Sanrenmu discussion made me ask myself: are the old Schrade, Puma, Case, Camillus, Utica, and Ka-Bar folding hunters all clones of the Buck 110?
Traditionals are such an interesting case for this idea. I honestly don’t know enough to weigh in. I’d live to hear ideas though!
That’s a great point! I’ve heard a lot of those other companies back lock, brass bolster, clip point blades, called a “Buck Knife” so that’s definitely an interesting topic! I believe that they’re all “brothers” like Ben said because they are so similar, but I can totally see someone calling them all clones for a handful of reasons.
Ben, Zac (Jamie and Austin), you guys got me started on the "knife life" years ago. Through your mentorship, humility and humor you guys have shown the world that the knife community is rooted in friendship and fun. Great to see Ben and Zac together again. Keep up the great work!

When u get to a point in knife collecting you understand that the small nuances in knives are what make them different and special. To a non knife nerd all knives look alike. I think it’s the small changes that make the general knife design special. The banter and baby banter are spot on designs. Haven’t gotten a lander just yet. But I can definitely see the design cues that make it different

There are literally so many knife designs at this point it's hard not to design a knife that has similarities to other knives.
Without these two I wouldn’t have a love for knifes! Also I’m a anthropology major now and love the idea of looking at the knife community through a anthropological lens!
It's kinda like how Disney and Pixar made Ants and A Bugs Life with absolutely no thought to what the other was doing but through market research both realized that a movie about bugs would do well.
This was an exact example I thought to use but never got too😎

I don't know what I was expecting with this collaboration, but thanks for the deep dive on knife design. I have a feeling that this is going to shape how I look at knife designs and similarities between designs in general.

Such a great conversation guys! Loved hearing you guys get into the nitty gritty here. One of the biggest things I catch myself doing when designing knives is wondering "does it look to close to x, y or z". It's a pain, because it brings me to a point of indecision where some ideas just get scrapped all together. I think when sketching something, it is a lot easier to be hyper aware of your own influences in a way that far exceeds how others will see it. The sum of all of the parts is what makes something unique in it's own way!

This was such an incredible video for so many reasons! I loved the intro; I firmly believe that if your relationship with one another in “real” life - always there for each other! Having you guys together again for a video is always a treat! It was like watching an after school special, or when a guest star shows up on your favorite show! And the discourse was amazing… convergent and divergent design and cultural content… I feel much more educated!

This was the fastest 30+ minute video I’ve ever watched. As for doing it again, I’d watch this type of content from you guys every week!!! Please continue to do all of the things you’ve been doing!
I've noticed on top of small similarities in knife designs, people also get stuck on color. For example, I feel like nearly every knife that has blue FRN or G10 scales gets compared to base model blue Bugout. When you look beyond the color, most of those knives don't look anything like the Bugout. I read those comparisons in online comments all the time and I don't understand how people don't see the differences.
Edit: Also, I love the interactions with you and the old BHQ crew. It's obvious you're all good friends and have a lot of fun together. It shows through in these videos and they're a joy for us knife nerds to watch. Thanks for making the video and keep 'em coming! Cheers!
