Hi Ross - like your attitude and expertise with hens. Some really sound stuff in the vid. I kept my home flocks on deep litter - chopped straw, over 6 inches deep on an anti-rat-wired shed floor. It was sweet for months as a bit of corn on the floor soon gets it turned over. Their house ALWAYS smelt sweet and the floor stayed golden until I decided they deserved some new litter. As for the runs. Like you, grass gone in seconds. I solved that with the odd bale of WHEAT straw, not scattered but broken into four and the chickens enjoyed it no end by spreading it themselves. Thanks for emphasising that it is a hands-on commitment. Livestock being living creatures depending on us, need frequent and regular attention in every season. Well done. all the best - Paul

Spot on with your comments Ross, keeping chickens is a commitment if you are a responsible person, I only have 3 girls and they are delightful, real characters, they actually climb on my knee and my shoulders when I am in their yard. Fun times. Lol

Hi mate, i've recently got an allotment, but have a friend who has one two allotments down from me, who has been hospitalised and we didnt find out until like 2 weeks after the fact, he had 19 chickens but unfortunately after going in, is down to 12. I've been going up every day feeding and watering but i've never dealt with chickens before and know nothing about them. He had them in 4 different runs. (All dead have been cleared now but i'm unsure on intergrating) Run 1: 6 Chickens 3 Dead.. Run 2: 6 Chickens 3 Dead Run 3: 5 Chickens 0 Dead. Run 4 2 Chickens 1 dead.
Run 4 is currently alone and as I say i know nothing about chickens etc, i've been going up once daily to feed and water but thats it. Any advice?

Sounds like you're doing a good thing, as long as they have food & water that's the main thing.
Without seeing the set up or them its hard to advise more.

Yes they are good but your trusting it to look after your hens. Personally I would rather lock it my self so I know its locked. But it's an option.

Yes I do, but sadly we cant at the moment in UK due to birdflu quarintine.

I'd love to have chickens but we have foxes that visit the plot all the time, and at home there are foxes that live under next doors shed, so sadly I don't think it would be a good idea!
We have foxes too, they visit all the time if I go early in the morning I can smell where they have sprayed on the allotment. it's posible to make a run pretty secure, but you'll know best. 👍
As you love children (chicken) and looking after them you are good people and should be vegan, not eat chicken, not exploit them for eggs or poop, you can use plant compost as well and eat plants to protect yourself from nasty germs and also noroviruses and other viruses to be healthy and kind, stay safe. blessed be!
I understand this. But I also believe in sustainable farming. And only eat meat that local and ethically farmed.
Sadly if people stopped eating meat many animals would die out. Google rare or extinct farm animals. Its an intresting look at how meat CAN be ethical.
