How Well Should You Hear In Background Noise? - Speech-In-Noise Hearing Test (QuickSIN)

  • How well should you Hear in Background Noise? With Speech-In-Noise testing, audiologists can predict your level of success. Dr. Clifford Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, discusses Speech-in-Noise Testing and how it can predict your ability to hear in background noise with hearing aids.
    Website: www.DrCliffAuD...
    Clinic Website: www.AppliedHea...
How does the Quick Speech-In-Noise (QuickSIN) test work? Basically it requires that you repeat sentences out loud with increasing background noise to determine your Signal to Noise ratio loss (SNR Loss).
This SNR Loss will range from 0 to 26. If you score a 0, you hear better than normal in background noise. If you score a 26, it means that any background noise makes it nearly impossible to hear in background noise.
Knowing this score will help a hearing care professional determine what treatment is necessary for you to perform better in noise. On top of that, it makes Real Ear Measures even more critical to maximize hearing aid performance. Watch the Real Ear Measures video here: • The Most Important HEA...
If you want to hear better in background noise, you need Real Ear Measures, but you also may need better hearing aids and a remote listening device. A device like a remote microphone will have the largest impact on how well you hear in background noise.
Bottom line it, if you struggle to hear in background noise, you need to know your SNR Loss, otherwise, we don't know if it is you or your technology.

Thank you for your videos. They have helped me ask my hearing impaired husband the correct questions about his test and hearing aid. Though I have to repeat them several times!
He's a Vet and went to the VA hospital. I just learned after the hearing test he was offered 2 choices of hearing aids. (He has a ReSound GN.)
She gave a hearing test then took a mold of his ears. Nothing more.
When he went to pick then up she said his brain would adjust to background noises. That it would take time.
Once home he wore them for a few hours. Guess where they are? In a drawer.
He can't tolerate background noise. For example we have a fan that is quiet and on low but he can't hear the TV because the fan drowns it out. To him it may as well be a helicopter.
Even with the fan off, he can't tolerate the TV. He hears the background noises such as music, people clapping, birds etc., that drown out dialogue.
As for me, I'm frustrated! I have to repeat myself so many times it is to the point I don't speak or ask a question unless it is absolutely necessary. Wish you would do a video about family members frustrations for those needing hearing aids or not wearing them and the toll it takes.
He gets aggravated at me because I don't speak loud enough when I am already speaking in a louder tone. Then, when I speak even louder, he feels I'm yelling!
Needless to say, we do not have meaningful conversation or any "conversations" now.
I wear ear plugs to muffle the TV he has up very loud.
    I'm at my wits end!
Please do a video about how those who won't wear hearing aids affect family members and what, if anything, can help encourage them to do so!
After watching your videos it has become obvious that he wasn't tested correctly. No REM, no Quick SIN test or SNR.
This upsets me for both of us and the tax dollars wasted for a hearing aid that is useless!

Hi Linda, I'm sorry that the VA failed you and your husband. These are definitely signs of an improper fitting. I will see about developing a video about the impact of untreated hearing loss on family members.

LJ Adkins Hi, I know your comment is old, but as an audiologist, your husband’s complaints are very common. There are lots of adjustments that can be done to the hearing aids that can help your husband with the transition. Most people need at least a couple follow-up appointments for a successful fitting. Consistent use is also very important!

Wow this is so interesting. I have never been tested for background noise and i waa born moderately severely deaf . Background noise is always difficult for me. A few months ago i got a bluetooth mic to use with my HAs and this has made a huge difference! I love my mic. Also yr video abt WRS is excellent. Hearing loss is so nuanced and ppl don't understand that my hearing really is poor when i have excellent communication skills. That video has given me more ways to explain my deafness to those who don't understand.

I know you filmed this a few years ago, but I just found it. I'm in Scotland and use hearing aids, but am having trouble understanding speech even with the noise reduction. Basically if there's much background noise I can barely hear myself think, let alone hear people well enough to make out what they're saying. All the audiologists say is that ther is no way of reducing background noise any further. I only ever had the hearing tests done where they play frequencies at different volumes. I asked once about real ear tests, but was told they only do more advanced tests if there's something seriously wrong.

    Dr. Cliff,
Is this related to auditory processing? It's fairly common for people on the autism spectrum to have auditory processing difficulty (or most senses). It's like the brain perceives everything all at once and cannot filter.
I often struggle to understand what people are saying to me, or characters on TV, etc. It's like I can hear the sounds but struggle to parse them out and recognize the words.
I get by when it's a relatively quiet environment and if they enunciate very clearly. Other times I have to ask them to repeat themselves and become too embarrassed so just move along without knowing.
It's always been like this for me. I brought it up when I was a kid but hearing screenings back then (basic lift hand when hear beep) were normal so nothing was done about it. I learned much later as an adult that auditory processing is something else, we hear with our ears but listen with our brains. Not all audiologists even test for it, or if they do it's for kids. I found one office that does but tells me I don't qualify because you 1st need to have normal hearing and I have mild hearing loss in one ear now.

I lost a crucial interview because I cant hear properly because of this background noise... Their office was just beside the highway wherein alot of cars are travelling around during that time. I passed the tests, very confident that I land that job because of my work experience as well and I'm basically ready for everything unfortunately beacause of that background noise I couldn't hear what the interviewer is saying properly to the point that I asked him to repeat the question 3x and I can't even understand what he was trying to say. He got annoyed and thinks that I'm absent minded so sadlife I lost that. I was looking for free or natural solutions for this. This happened to me alot of times even when I was just talking to my colleagues and friends I cant hear what they were saying then I will just say OK to it even though I didn't understand what they were telling.

Hi! I found out I have a mild speech in hearing loss at a local audiologist. I believe my loss occurred with chemo 9 years ago. I’m concerned about this being a gateway to dementia. The audiologist did not recommend a hearing aid. I am very concerned about missing speech at work, in a noisy rehab gym, or socializing with friends in noisy environment. Is there a hearing aid I can use successfully? Thanks Loren (SLP)

Hi Insight. First, you need to know what your SNR Loss is. Second, you need to know if your hearing aids are programmed to your hearing loss prescription by having Real Ear Measurement performed. After having these two things done, you may or may not need a remote microphone. You would get one from your hearing care professional.
