3D Zoetrope: Fish eating Fish

  • Zoetrope kits available now! www.4-mation.co.uk
    Kit unboxing video • 4-Mation Zoetrope Kit ... (with optional Frogs V2 animation set)
    Video also shows kit assembly - I can do it in 5 minutes! but it should take most people less than 1/2 hour.
    The animation was printed on a Form2 - and it has been much improved since this video - (better swallow, larger starting fish, and hollowing for better printing) which you can see in this video • 4-Mation 3D zoetropes:... . You can download the files pre-supported for Form2 here: www.thingiverse.com/thing:302...
    For newer printers like the Elegoo Saturn and similar 8.9inch LCD printers (or larger) you can download the pre-supported files here: cults3d.com/en/3d-model/art/f...
    Note the 2D colour printed carousel sheet design is not public, you have to get that from us at 4-mation.co.uk
    Note: for filming - we use high speed shutter and match carousel rotation speed to the camera fps (you can see me adjust the carousel speed on the phone app).
    In person, 4-Mation uses strobes - 24 x 3Watts - but strobes do not film well - so we turn them off and use shutter speed instead.
    Storyboarded, printed, built by Kevin Holmes, animation and character design by Johnathn Scoon of Bottle and Spoon animation / bottleandspoon / scoonani
    Music is Gunnar Johnsen : Strange Tech 3 - edited to extend the second half. From epidemic sound, music licensing service.

    This is mind-bending. Congrats on doing such a fantastic job with all the pieces. There should be a full TV documentary on this artform. Zoetropes have been around for over 100 years, but nothing remotely as awesome as this. Bravo!

      Thanks! you're too kind :) I mean there are a few other zoetropes out there that I think look really good. The Toy Story and Studio Ghibli ones for example. They're obviously large machines with big budgets, and there's other big ones too, although none of them lean into the multiplied-loop technique like me. Maybe I'll get a chance to one-up them one day with a big-budget client ;)

    Do you need a camera to view it like this? Is viewing with naked eye the same?

    • @DSDesignWoodworking
      @DSDesignWoodworking 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since they didn't reply I'll take a shot at it.. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the frame rate of the camera (i.e. how many frames per second captured), along with a spinning rpm that nearly matches the frame rate. Similar to how wheels on cars can look like they are nearly motionless or even spinning backwards when filmed if the rpm of the wheel is close to the frame rate of the camera.

    • @massimookissed1023
      @massimookissed1023 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For naked eye viewing without the camera:
      The wooden cross up top has LEDs on the underside that strobe flash in synch with the 20 sectors of animation going past.
      20 flashes / rev, 75 rpm = 25 "frames" per second.

      Yes in this video - but also for human eyes when the strobes are on, eg: th-cam.com/video/EBMwX6BTRHA/w-d-xo.html in that video the camera is configured to be like human eyes and it's filmed with with the strobes. Off at the beginning, then on, and off again at the end - the main difference against the human eye is that it's better than the camera at handling the colour and light range when the strobes are off or on.

      It works IRL too with strobes, but strobes do not film well. So for filming I turn the strobes off, set the shutter speed to 1/2000 and adjust the carousel rpm so that the camera sees 24 carousel segments per second. I'll be posting more videos including some with a colleagues camera that minimises the artefacts caused when filming with strobes.

      With the strobes on we normally run it at 100 RPM (generating about 33 strobes per second) but when filming with rolling shutter camera we turn the strobes off and match the carousel speed to the camera frame rate which works out around 72 RPM.

    • @n0f8r

      "nuked eyes" 🤣🤣 - not sure if that's a typo or not - since for "naked eyes" strobes create the effect - see here: th-cam.com/video/idemWAE6Jjo/w-d-xo.html if it wasn't a typo, then note that the strobes don't nuke the eyes at default frame rate of 28fps, but if you go down below 25fps it can get uncomfortable!

      Thanks, my English is still terrible.
      I remember learning this effect at the Photography school, but it was almost 40 years ago...

      @@alexabadi7458 ahh - I wasn't sure, because if you take the strobe rate down to like 15 strobes per second or lower- and have the brightness up high - then it does Nuke your eyes! I mean it's quite uncomfortable and most people instantly their head turn away and complain ...

      see my reply to your other comment on the "how 3D zoetropes work" - I put a lot of effort into that video, I can't think of a better way to explain how it works. I sell the strobe+frame+motor kits that come with an App for interactive control

    I'm wondering. Normally a zoetrope requires a strobe light to see the effect. Our eyesight doesn't flicker.
    So the fact we see this, I'm assuming is more due to the flickering of the camera filming the rotation. Like when filming the blades of a helicopter, at certain speeds the blades seem to be frozen still.
    How will we see this with our naked eyes?
    Also, this was published on Oct 2017. But your page still has a form to be notified of the kickstarter. Will there be a kickstarter?

      See the video description - strobes do not film well without a global shutter, so we turn them off for filming. You could also check out our video explaining how 3D zoetropes work, filmed with a hired Sony F55 that does have a global shutter.

      Thanks. My question was not so much about how you filmed it, but more about how it will actually work for someone who owns the 3d zoetrope. Nevertheless, you said "we turn them off for filming", which tells me the zoetrope comes with strobes. Which answers my first question.
      Now the second question I had: when?

    • @n0f8r
      @n0f8r  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I pointed you at the "how zoetropes work" video because in that video the strobes are on. We hired a sony F55 for a weekend to film it. The F55 can film the strobes because it has a global shutter.

    A few small questions
    What's the speed 1440 rpm or 1800?
    Strobe information please.

    • @n0f8r
      @n0f8r  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Top speed is 100rpm, but in the video - to sync with the camera frame rate of 25fps - it's running at about 75rpm. When the strobes are on, they always fire 20 times per revolution, so at 75rpm that equates to about 25 strobes per second. At 100rpm that means about 33 strobes per second.

    Does this look as cool in real life? Or is it mostly camera tricks?

    • @n0f8r
      @n0f8r  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In real life it uses strobes, normally strobe flashes don't film well and this video was filmed with the strobes off - however I recently upgraded the control software to allow better filming with the strobes on th-cam.com/video/J3o9QBifdrY/w-d-xo.html
