Thank you for joining us on this crazy journey! Our family- Kate and Marius plus our four kids, have always enjoyed living a homemade life whenever possible. Moving 1000miles north in 2017 to Northern BC, Canada upped our game even more. We live on a 34 acre homestead and get a kick out of things like raising our own meat, dairy and vegetables. Theres plenty of failures, you’ll be sure to see those here too. We’re a homeschooling family who believes life is the best teacher but we do hit the books in winter. You can find lots of real life confessions, recipes, how to’s and “The Schat Show”. Family health and diet, natural health, cooking, natural food, whole food, recipes, parenting, kids, children, babies, faith, family life, work life balance, survival, wildcraft, keeping a family milk cow, home dairy, chickens, eggs, meat chickens, raising meat, raising pigs, fencing, dogs, cats, garden, gardening, winter gardening, short season gardening, northern living, life in winter, outdoor adventure, nature study, plant identification, rural living, food preparation, heating with wood, firewood, child training, homeschooling are all topics you will find here

Calf sharing can work! It really just helps with being able to milk once a day eventually, but you have to start the “routine” early on. Cows love consultancy. Keep trying! It can work!! And can give you a break if you need to and the calf is old enough. Good luck!

We did it! For weeks! It just didn't work...It was frustrating. I really wanted it to work

@@VenisonforDinner Instead of thinking "this should happen this way FOR me" think about how things should happen in nature. If the cows sense your greedy and entitled they wont like you :/ It takes a lot of patience and gratitude.

Oh man! What a pain in the butt! I have plans of a milk cow once we’re passed the possibility of morning sickness phase of life. I have every intention of calf sharing and my dad (stubborn old farmer 😉) insists that it’s a royally stupid idea that my “internet farmers” thought up. This video isn’t giving me much faith in case 😂 I do hope she’s totally back to normal now! Thanks for always keeping it real!

problem is wont come back and calf hides ... have to train it first time .. then be routine ... hold milk and calf hides and cow wont come ... many problems from that ... trick is real good relationship with the cow ... then wild nails eating the calf so on ... mastitis ... look up the pioneer lady of it . and australian lady and europe farm does it ,,, maybe have calf pastures by cow pastures ... cows break through anything with strong maternal bonds or smarter cows ... they get over or around great wall china for sure ... lol.

Our Nubians do similar things, holding milk back, etc. but in time they adjust and let down, sometimes they give me all the morning milk so I don’t take it all. It is a progression. The kids are put up at night, out with mom all day. The big difference is that we sell the kids at 2 to three months old. For a couple days after, the moms hold back some then let down fine the rest of the milk season.

calf sharing is easier with two cows. when you calf share with one it stresses the cow out.
also, the milkers are very cheap. I know it's the homestead style to hand milk. It's a lot less effort though if you even get a basic bottle milk system. you can DIY it. great video doesn't give up on the calf sharing. Just get two next time. Also, you might want to woodchip your sacrifice pasture. When you do that it keeps all the manure and you can use it. I grow a crop in that pasture just in case. normally it's a bean crop or something else. I scrap it out every once and awhile.
depending on where you live. you might want to grow grapes near the area as well as grapes can be feed off. wild grapes grow well without much effort.

Interesting on the calf sharing! My husband wants me to get a second milk cow but I don't want to at this point. My hesitation against a machine milker (we've had one before) is the washing. We're on limited water so using more water isn't ideal, and i hate washing more things. If we got a second cow, or when the current heifer calf freshens in a couple years...maybe...

@@VenisonforDinner Ya, it is very stressful for single cows. The level of stress for a cow on it's own is slightly nuts when you stop and think about it. It's a herd animal. Even doing simple things like itching for flies everything becomes 100% harder. Also, cows groom each other for comfort. Eitherway I hope it worked out for you.

I keep going back and forth with what we are going to do when our girl calves. First time around, there was a lot of things that made it difficult, mainly that the calf was 6 months old when we got them. Now I just don’t know if calf sharing will be a flop andnmake life difficult again, or if it will be the blessing everyone says it will be. 😂

If its a heifer you want to keep, I would pull the calf and bottle feed because its a pain to leave them together afterwards, the heifer will always want to nurse off her mom.

Very thankful for your encouragement against calf sharing in what seems like so many ARE encouraging it. We bring home our first milk cow just after freshening, but her calf will not be coming. We’ve been warned against, but you help me feel encouraged that it will work just fine! Any insight you have, I’d appreciated. Hopefully she’ll let down for us without her calf here, I’m sure we’re in for an adventure right off the bat.

great idea .. just close pasture . you need to handle baby if momma dont kill you .. baby becomes wild for life . long time trust gaining ... lol. pasture in yard so forth . maybe when calfs up and running and trusts you . then they can run the farm .. calf share is impossible for probly even 20 cows //.. takes to long ... maybe once figure out the tricks . bigger you go you need more close pasture or fresh pasture pen .. big numbers you need to grow fodder to feed cow and calf or feed silage and hay and thats more equipment .. heavy lifting manulel labor ... warm year round is the best deal ... i like thinking about these things ... need pasture hooked to barn and fresh cow in for week then out . move calf out at milking time in separate pen . then trained and go to regular away pastures and calf should be tame and come back with mommy .. then she hopefully still lets down ... they say they do it but if y ou share she wants baby to get the milk ... work on pattern and tricks of how to do it and stick with it , pray for no mastitis . lol.

The cow is producing milk for the calf, not for you. Let her be with her baby.. poor mommy cow 😥 you should be sorry

    • @VenisonforDinner
      @VenisonforDinner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

If i left the cow and calf together and didnt milk the cow, the cow produces more milk than the calf can drink and the cow would get mastitis and die. This way the calf still drinks its mamas milk, and our family gets nutrient dense whole foods to nourish our family. If all you came to my channel to do was to comment ignorant things...just get off the internet. ✌️ If however, you have questions about how this works, I'm happy to answer.

@@VenisonforDinner why dont u just leave the calf with the cow and let her drink as she goes along..... in other words you give the mother one strong milking once a day and let the calf suck as she goes along the rest of the day?
