    It's great to see them let it go, but I can't help feeling that it may not have survived. By this I mean you need to look into swim bladders in fish. I remember (as a kid) reading about the swim bladder expanding quickly when a fish is brought up too fast from deep water. I maybe wrong but, I think that's why it was belly up for quite some time when they let it go.

      @Maximus Decimus Meridius I am an avid muskey fisher, and used downriggers in over 60 feet to catch the big ones. They like it down there. The only problem was the swim bladder got so big from the pressure that it comes out of their mouth, and had to poke it with a syringe. Not only pressure, but we pull them above the thermocline, shocking them from the temperature, and shocking them again by fighting them. Most of the ones caught went down just like that fish. Upside down. It was probably weak, and beloted with air. Most of the musky's I fought died. They probably all did. I stopped fishing them that way. It probably would have been best to keep that huge fish, and eat it or something.

    Zwhat effect does bringing a fish up from 1500 feet have on the animal? I know humans cannot come up from depths fast or they get the bends but what about these huge fish does it affect them the same way?

    • @bill1usmc
      @bill1usmc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If that fish was actually 1500 ft down then it most likely died after releasing it. The swim bladder doesn't have sufficient time to release gas causing a rupture that will inevitably kill the animal. The difference between sea level and 1500 feet deep is about 729 psi, so the chances are it didn't have time to acclimate thus ensuring its demise.

    lol just put your boat side aligned with the current, and let it drift slowly.. so you get the fish in the other side of boat that current carry you(so the fish line do not go under the boat). Another click bait video. Should have put Giant Sword Fish caught in 1500 feet of water for the title, so I could have passed this video up. Thought you caught something different or special. Surprised the eyes didn't pop out, and more than likely it died before it ever reached home depth. You could tell it was bloated and in shock when released.

    Absolutely no point in returning it to the water. Having been raised ("hauled up") rapidly from 1,500 feet (pressure = 660 psi./45 bar), its swim-bladder would have burst early on in the ascent and the gas that the bladder contained will have diffused into the surrounding tissues to expand and cause further damage as it was finally raised to the surface. This will the cause the fish to be unable to swim in a balanced way and to be constantly fighting buoyancy problems. In other words it will be unable to hunt (it's a predatory species) and so starve to death, slowly and possibly very painfully.
    Unless, of course, swordfish don't have a swim bladder (but I think they do), in which case please ignore this comment (rant?).
    I hope you enjoyed your moment of pleasure because I bloody sure the fish didn't. Notwithstanding, I have no problem with you catching it but I do have a real problem with the drawn out consequences for the damaged fish when you return it the water. Please, next time, just kill it and eat it.

    • @YouFishTV
      @YouFishTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martin. Swordfish often rapidly ascend and descend up to 600m. They do have a swim bladder and aren’t immune to barotrauma but the likely hood of this one surviving are extremely high given it was hooked outside the mouth and was able to descend several atmospheres on its own in order to decompress.
      This is backed up by a number of sat tagged swords in our fishery which went on to survive perfectly. By tagging and releasing these fish we gain a greater understanding of them so that we don’t have to guess and assume like you have.

    Hi guys, thanks heaps for your awesome comments. Just for those who don’t know we have a scientist here in Australia called Dr Sean Tracey who studies swordfish. His area of expertise is satellite tagging recreationally hook and line caught large swordfish from 1500-1700ft deep. His research has shown the survival rate of fish caught like the one in this video is extremely high, in fact likely. Satellite tagging has seen many fish of this caliber go on to thrive after release and travel all over the world before returning back to this area. This particular fish estimated at 500lbs was landed in only 50 minutes then swam away very strongly and was almost certainly unharmed. I hope that addresses your concerns about whether the fish survived. Thanks everyone!

      I'm glad that you recognized it as a female. Most nonsportfishermen assume that because it's so large that it's a male. I used to go to the docks at Morehead City, NC, to watch the annual blue marlin tourney. I never gave any thought to what became of the winning marlin. Well, my last year going there was because the 700+ lb. trophy fish ended up being buried in my next door neighbor's garden to rot as fertilizer. So essentially it was killed so the winner could hoist it up to take its picture! That totally disgusted me. Don't get me wrong: I'm not at all opposed to hunting and fishing, in fact I did both when I was younger. But I just can't condone not eating the kill yourself or selling or giving it to somebody else to eat. I'd go on the fishing piers and it would bother me to see even a pin fish rotting in the sun at the fisherman's feet. He could have kicked it back in in just 6". Just not right. 🐬 🐡 🐟 🐠

      @ Ever notice "some" species have their stomachs hanging outside their mouths or eyeballs bulging but but other species don't when you pull them up from several hundred feet or more? There is a reason for this. Notice this fish's insides were not hanging out nor was his eyeballs. He will be ok, I promise.

    I don't know about salt water but catching fresh water fish down deep and bringing them up causes injuries that usually lead to death. In my area its recommended not to fish deep in waters that have size slots or protected fish because anything caught deep is likely to die from the pressure and temperature changes when brought to the surface. Seems like that guy was pretty lively though, hopefully it survived!
