- An earthquake with an early measure of magnitude 6.4 hit Southern California, about 150 miles north Los Angeles near Ridgecrest, California, according to the US Geological Survey.
At least four large aftershocks have been recorded, measuring 4.7, 3.5, 3.8 and 4.2 magnitude, officials said.
The quake was felt in central Los Angeles as a long, rolling quake, making buildings rock back and forth for at least several seconds.

As you know we had 2 major hurricanes practically back to back in 2017.
I'd take hurricanes over earthquakes, any day.
Why?
Because you can have at least 12 hours to prepare (stock up food, water, etc)
There really is no way to prepare for a quake.
Well there is a way to prepare, everyone should know that there is a big one awaiting for California, since 7th grade-30+years ago our Social Studies teacher told us that a big earthquake is expected that it may rip Cali off the map. #BePrepared!!!
I feel different but I'm imagining Puerto Ricos building and bridges don't compare to California? I'm not trying to insult and I know I can be dead wrong on that. But I've lived here my whole life and no one really fears earthquakes here. Its rarely catastrophic. Hurricanes and tornadoes, which I've never experienced, seem much more destructive.

We're very much the same here regarding hurricanes. We've experienced them since we were little kids so in a way they are a regular occurrence. Seismic activity, the type you feel the floor or the building where you are shake, not so much.
@@Poc3d i'm a cali native, but i also spent 15 years in tornado alley. on the west coast, i did as we do... on the east coast, i did as they do. their homes are brick, which can take the huffing and puffing of a tornado and stand firm and rigid in the worst gales, but would shatter like glass during a pitiful 2.0 earthquake... our homes here are wood and flexible materials and construction methods that move and bend with the shifting ground, which would be torn apart and knocked over in a light gust back east...
we are safe in both places because our building standards have to compensate for the hazards of the region we live in. neither is more or less dangerous than the other, but we tend to think of what our home would be like elsewhere... instead of realizing the home we'd have elsewhere isn't built anything like the home we'd left behind.
it's the mentality of the person who has hurricanes thinking "i can go shopping two weeks in advance- you earthquake people have no time to prepare, how do you manage to rush it?", but the earthquake person says "i've been prepared for 20 years- you hurricane people only have two weeks to prepare, how do you manage to rush it?" ...it's just perspective from not having lived elsewhere and not knowing what they do to prepare.

Thank you God. I live in LA and I'm safe. I guess having earthquakes is just one of the drawbacks people who live here in California(LA, SF) have to deal with. East Coast folks who live in NYC/Boston/Philly/DC,etc probably don’t have to deal with this as much. Luckily, most of the earthquakes here are not life threatening.
The shaking this morning probably lasted 10 seconds or so. It was pretty bad and certainly one of the biggest earthquakes I have experienced in LA over my 20 years of living here but overall it wasn't so bad especially comparing to the one I have experienced on the 30th floor of a hotel in Shinjuku, Tokyo two years ago.

I live in the region affected by the quake. It was a fairly long quake... exactly how long, I can't really say. Well, nothing really happened here. Just a fun little roller coaster ride for a minute or two. Didn't lose power, no cracked mirrors in my house... nothing. Didn't even wake up my dog. Given the location of the epicenter, this strikes me as being what we call a "shake and bake quake." That area of the Mojave gets _very_ hot this time of the year (105+), and the heating of the ground sometimes triggers small quakes, and occasionally larger ones. But we're just fine here.

My week has been compromised of this an explosion on Tuesday, illegal fireworks going off on Wednesday, and now a 6.4 magnitude earthquake today, damn it feels good to be back in the CA.

I live in Long Beach, CA, near the downtown area in a 4-plex on the 2nd floor of our building and this earthquake was felt very strongly here! I got under the frame of my bedroom door and held on and actually leaned against my doorway to be able to feel just how much the building was swaying back and forth and it was very significant!
I have a chandelier in my bedroom and it was swaying/swinging back and forth, like a swing a child's placed and given a huge push! It was definitely very scary here!
The floor of my room was like standing on a boat and having a larger boat pass by and your boat is caught in the wake of the larger one!
I kept waiting for it to end but it kept coming, growing in intensity! I've lived in Southern California since the late 1970's and I've experienced a lot of earthquakes, but never one as this significant. It felt more like the 7.1 magnitude that they first called, not the 6.3 that they later reported!
My fear is that these two fairly large earthquakes are the precursor to an 8.5 or something higher? This earthquake just seemed to roll where I live, there weren't any major damages or any deaths. I just hope that there's not another major one coming after this one!
I still feel as though my building is still swaying back and forth!
