  • For this week's video, I talk about 3 things I have seen people do during their first photo workshop. I know such advice is basic, but it is a good reminder that those three basic things can be a given and even forgotten. Are you guilty of any of those? What do you use to keep your camera clean?

    Back in the dark ages, one would never go out for a shoot without extra rolls of film. Nowadays, even with batteries that will last for hundreds of shots, I never go anywhere without a spare.
    Good ideas all around.
    Thanks for another worthwhile video!📷📷📷

    ❤ Good times and reminders, plus your mom seems so sweet to help out. I have heard conflicting info on spraying liquid fluid on lens. I have heard spray cleaner on cleaning rag and then wipe on lens. Thoughts??

      I think Tip #3 should be #1. But more than, "read the manual", you should "Know your camera", the first step of which is reading the manual. To make the most of your time at a workshop, you want to operate the camera intuitively.

    Never spray cleaning fluid on the lens. Spray it on your cleaning cloth instead. That way, you reduce the risk of fluid leaking into the lens.
    Don't use UV filter, unless you are in some extremely aggressive environment, such as a sandstorm or shooting film.

      Also, blow or dust off the lens before using a cloth. The cloth can grind the lens with any grit that might be present.

    Thanks for very useful tips, Emilie (and mother), and for delivering them with your customary warmth and good humour. It's unfathomable to me that anyone would not keep their equipment clean and ready to go, but there you have it. Knowing your camera - and I guess, having it set up so you can use it well - is something I see in professional photographers all the time on these YT clips: the ease with which they make adjustments is quite a lesson to amateurs like myself. Learning the camera in-depth, and even plowing through the manual is not always a straightforward (although entirely necessary) task , because the OM-1 manual (for example) is almost 340 pages long, so I supplement my reading of this with more practical advice on camera setup from yourself and other luminaries like Rob Trek and Thomas Eisl.

      Ah excellent channels to follow. Rob and Thomas have great advice. Love their work!

    3:50 No, no, no. NEVER spray anything on the lens. Always spray it on your cleaning cloth, then use your cleaning cloth on the lens, clean from the inside to the outside gently.

    Do you use uv / sky light filters on your lenses?

    • @EmilieT
      @EmilieT  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't for most of the time.

    • @unoengborg
      @unoengborg ปีที่แล้ว

      Only when shooting film at sea, on the beach, or in high mountains. UV filters do nothing on digital cameras. They are primarily a way for your photo equipment dealer to get you to pay an extra $100 or so. UV filters are thin and are much more prone to breaking than your lens. If they do, the glass fragments from your broken filter may damage your lens. Instead, always use a lens hood to protect your lens from bumping into things. The lens hood may also actually improve your image quality.

      @@unoengborg Thanks Uno, being old school the use of filters was recommended primarily to protect your lens. Lens hoods are definitely the way forward removing an extra layer of glass. Peter
