The biggest problem with the E36 is that it's been a boyracers dream for 30 years at this point. They are so good cars and handle awesome when done right, but they've all been taken apart and fucked with by any number of idiots and put back together with zipties and other wonky shenanigans. It's hard to actually find a good, clean unmolested one. Like, BMW knew they fucked up on the E36 interior and got a bit cheap, cause the E46 interior is so much better. The powertrain is mostly bulletproof tho. A good "hack" to get a non molested one is getting automatics and manual swapping it. You'll get shock towers and subframes that aren't blown out by wannabe drifters. It's not that difficult of a swap and can be done in a weekend with time for a few beers in between.
My 1998 M3 Convertible and the Dakar Yellow 1995 I used to have were two of the best cars I've ever owned. Current cars are a 1988 M3 and a 1992 MTech II convertible. Now I want another E36 after watching this video lol .
2 years ago I convinced myself to buy a 1997 E36 320i convertible. My daily is a 2019 120i. A great, great little car! Naturally, driving the E36 is a different experience compared to the 120i. The E36 is rewarding in its own way. It makes you feel more connected to the road. The manual gear box is great. The steering is precise. And the humming song of the straight six is wonderful. It has AFAIK never been driven in the winter time, and I will only drive it May to September. No problems yet. It starts just fine. No noises that shouldn't be there. We'll see. So far, so good. 😅
Bro your videos are awesome! I have an old German car too, a 2004 Mercedes S600 with a V12 Biturbo, I bought it with lots of problems too, the car had ABC suspension which is hydraulic, it failed and the car completely sagged, so I installed Coilovers and now the only issue it has is an annoying battery drain which is related to my cluster, and of course oil leaks, which for 20+ year old German cars are OK. I want to make videos of the S600 like you! I plan on buying an E36 M3 sedan, i love how they look. I think it would be a nice second car, more “reliable”, like a daily driver! I’m also from the MA area!
I appreciate it. I’m editing a new video that I am really proud of -think it punches way above these previous ones. Hope you all enjoy even if I part ways with the m3 in the future
Came across your channel, good luck and yes smart move selling a car you love, it truly is such a good looking car. I just picked up a 99 m3 vert 5spd with 105k miles for 7k. It was little rough but mechanically it's solid so far. I'm learning and it's not my daily so I don't stress it much. Just got some vaders and building over nj winter. Good luck w channel, seem nice kid...
I've got a 2006 330i and I'm on the brink of selling it and getting a new econobox lol. I've dailied the car for almost 7 years now and have definitely spent an arm and a leg on repairs and preventative maintenance to keep it clean and mechanically solid. A couple days ago the sunroof completely messed up and is stuck open with bent parts....it's always something. Good luck with your bimmer journey, alls to say it will probably be exciting in one way or another!
Old car problems haha. I feel you man. My E30 is 38 years old. And my E46 M3 is 19 years old. Guess what though… I’m a masochist so I still want an E36 M3 knowing the newest one is 25 years old 🤣🤣🤣
The reason why your horn and airbags are disconnected is because the sport z3 m style wheel was only meant for 98” and 99” e36 m3s that came with completely different steering clock springs. That’s the reason why your missing the metal ring and the air bags have different connectors. So theirs no real way to connect it unless if you buy a older wheel like the m-tech 2 wheel
Thanks for the info! I swapped on the 4 spoke stock wheel that came with this exact m3. The previous owner literally cut all the wiring so I’m going to have to strip and connect and buy new connectors it looks like :/. And the white pogo contact for the horn is broken into two pieces so I have to get one of those too
Great video and intro to E36 ownership! I've got a 1999 black/black coupe just over in Coolidge Corner hahah. Can't wire a horn but down to help on other issues you run into!
Nice video. Great cars. Thoughts on these wheels? Im torn w my 23s, some days i like em some days i dont. May splurge on bbs but at $4k i feel money can go elsewhere on to the e36.
Yeah I’m in the camp that wheels come after everything else on these cars, also depends on if it’s a show car vs driver vs autocross or track build, 4k is a good rainy day find for the health of the car
th-cam.com/video/560_upBEh5c/w-d-xo.html whoever modded that 3spoke in did not salvage the old horn connector from the 4 spoke wheel. Your airbag in that z3 wheel does not take a clock ring with the metal ring on the back. The video I linked above should reveal your solution.
Keep it. Not much of e36 content filmed like this anymore elsewhere on TH-cam. WE NEED THIS CHANNEL WITH THE E36
Haha I’ll think about it but don’t know how long it’ll be in my hands tbh
Bro is single handedly making me want to sell my 5speed 4runner to get an E36
Do it! They are insanely fun cars but be ready for repairs when they come!
Don't sell your 4runner bud

Most based bmw comment so far
Yes. Non-abused ones are safely sleeping in garages and rarely come up for sale (like mine 😁)

Your channel is about to blow up bro
Haha I’m hoping to make some even better stuff soon! Thank you 💪

Plotting my own path to an e36. Love the drive and talk angle but anchor it a bit better so it doesn't wiggle!
I want to add e36 m3 as daily. Considering selling the m4 and get e9x m3 and daily e36 m3
Hi Ian 👋. Love your content with your car and am learning a lot of what to expect when I try to buy one. I’ll be here all the way
Thank you! Really appreciate the kind words

Haha i feel you there. For my Miata I just stripped everything out and put in cheap stuff. The E36 is a bit of a different beast
e36 m3 ftw

Godspeed brother 🫡 much thanks
Godspeed brother 🫡 much thanks
Lmao my 95 m3 is so fucked but fun the luxury package interior is just dying slowly. It’s Boston green doe so everything worth it in the end
I know what’s wrong with your steering wheel. I just did a 4 spoke to 3 spoke conversion.
