@DrumRollTonyReacts fun fact. Mili actually has a fun twist with her songs she does that is in Rightfully. She makes up her own language that she can fluently speak and understand and uses it in her songs. This part is during the part where she goes "christ en momonte broustande montes".
The first episode shows you that the goblins are monsters in the truest meaning of the word. It sets them as unforgivable enemies. It puts you in the main character’s head and shows you that goblins only need to be exterminated, there is no sympathy for them. It doesn’t show what happens in a good light, and the main character eventually goes in and wipes all of them out.
Also the series wants to be graphic. The scene in episode one does a lot of things: it shows how far the series can go, how evil the creatures are, and instead of hiding behind suggestive imagery it shows the audience in near full the horror of what happens and what these characters have actually seen. Having seen the same evil the characters have seen helps put you in their headspace. Now you can argue against it all you want, and say well they could do this or that instead. Sure they could, but they didn't because they want to show the evil not allude to it. The best part is, if you aren't ok with that, you can drop it at the start. Personally I think the problem is not the act itself but how the scene was executed and how the subject is treated later. There's a series called Garden of Sinners and it's 3rd move starts with SA scene, but it manages to handle a heavy subject like this because the whole move is build around exploring and dealing with it while Goblin Slayer just shoves it in your face from time to time and later even starts to focus on boobs and butts of SA victims.
I will say however that the attitude towards fan service in the show is very confusing. On one hand we have the show present these despicable creatures and their unforgivable behavior, but on the other hand we have sword maiden’s outfit and the credits of season 2, featuring Priestess in a position you’d expect from a body pillow.

A reference to the older players playing this kind of games? _"My whole body exposed"_ -- something important to yourself, that should've been protected, is now not, and is marked by _your shadows_--already marred mangled desecrated. This could be the players as they are dragged deep into the gritty grim dark of the DM's settings, or could be the NPCs when they are in the face of the goblin raids. Mili is a quite amazing band, completely indipendany as well, they rely on their fans rather through patreon. So Mili works well with an anime based on DND since for a long time DND was very underground. All their music is quite different from each other, my personal favorite song is "Bathtub Mermaid".
I love using this song for cardio because it starts slow, ramps up, then you go hard, slow back down, then start ramping back up again to another sprint then cooling off with the final bit there.
There are few anime openings that fits like a glove in context of the shows they are playing in. Goblin Slayer and Re:Zero does it best in my personal opinion.
the song itself is a matter of personal opinion, so thats understandable. the opening as a whole (meaning visuals alongside sound) is really a downgrade from the previous. you have generic camera pans, unfitting sound to visuals since the visuals are muuuuch more intense than the sound, mediocre storytelling and concept since you don't really get whats the premise of the show and deeper meaning of whats going on from whats going on screen, and the overall storyboard doesn't get you nearly as hyped to see the show as it did with the first opening.
@@I-VisiBomb-I @I-VisiBomb-I A song doesn't need to be metal/rock to emphasize the intensity of a show. In these GS OPs, it's the underlying tension throughout the whole songs and their lyrics. Also it could be your own ignorance sometimes if you don't get some of the details in a song or an animated video. And OPs are not always about the hype. It depends on the genre of the anime. OP serves as the introduction or an overview of what's about to happen in an arc/season
@@arkayn1906you're bring up counterpoints to stuff i never said. never mentioned rock or metal. also hype doesnt have to mean excitement in the opening itself, rather than an excitement to see the show while seeing the op. just like openings like zenkuyo no terror can make you excited even though it is relatively chill, or even the first GS OP which just does a better job at fitting visuals to sound. this can go deep for people who see GS violently slashing on monsters with blood splattering all over, and the song in the background is so soft it feels like its not even coming from the source its related to. sure you can say its a motif and that the contrast between the two is the point, but it ends up being a mishmash of things and an imbalance of what you're supposed to get from what you're experiencing at the moment. plus i like how you're being humble by calling for ignorance even though you dont know my background, thats always great.
@@I-VisiBomb-I I was trying to give an example to say that a song doesn't need loud instruments and fast tempo, like rock/metal music, to be intense. Zankyou no terror OP is relatively soft sounding and the tension of the anime lies in the lyrics, which is a good example of that, so I'm really curious to why are you not that fond of GS OP 2? Also I said it could be of ignorance (a possibility) that you don't recognize the great details the song has, not saying you're definitely lack of knowledge, since I don't know your background. As I commented, I personally think op2 is better than op1, not that op1 is bad. In the end, everyone has their own taste, but there is a undeniably good amount of effort that goes into creating the song. I suggest u checking out the full version and the lyrics if u haven't done already, and try to look at it objectively.
Mili is soooo good and have such a unique sound. They mix the jpop sounds with classical, electronic classical, and post-classical genres, use multiple languages in their songs and just randomly shift between english, japanese, chinese, french. Their music is very playful and a lot of times has a sort of narrative design to it rather than the repeating typical structure you'd expect in modern stuff
I think the sounds that occurred around 1:50 into the opening could represent the sound of dice being rolled on the table, since Goblin Slayer is basically a D&D wold in the perspective of its inhabitants and the show makes lots of dice references.
One of my favourite anime openings. The version that they use for the anime cuts off the wacky bits near the end tho so it was interesting hearing them here lol
Here I am, from the chaos of the youtube's algorithm that brought me there. I really like your work and how you "dissected" this song. As for the anime, the first episode looks like a mix of "look how raw we are !" + the ennemy is dangerous + the main characters are cute and badass. Quite a regular thing to do when you want to last more than 7 episodes as an anime (I don't judge, I really enjoyed watching both seasons) Once again : bravo (for your analysis on this theme I can listen to, over and over again)
I never understood reaction to first episode of many people, like, we just were shown what goblins do, thats it. If people are reacting that way to this, they should react the same way to just killing of people imo.
I agree. You have the only intelligent take in the comment section tbh. We have become desensitized to murder in all capacity in shows, movies, and form of media that there is not much outrage. HOWEVER we do NOT watch r@pe in 99% of the similar comparable media so the comparison really falls flat. Its impossible to say the desensitized factor is there. This is like such a fn simple concept to grasp but do many just can't. Lol
@@DrumRollTonyReacts The original Grimm fairy tales had people being mutilated and dying in horrific ways. Violence in fiction ain't nothing new. The Grimm brothers even watered down some of their versions compared to the original tales.
That scene in ep1 serves its purpose to disturb and disgust. Show how horrible and monstrous goblins can be. Is it mandatory to the plot to show it tht explicitly? not really. But the difference of being more "viewable" vs implied is to set expectations for audiences. Make u despise goblins with no ounce of sympathy or empathy, even if their young gets slain as well. If it makes someone drop the show? Then tht is good as well since its simply just not meant for them. Personally think tht disturbing content has its place when its served to make a point or a purpose, and not just thrown in there for shock content or for the hell of it.
I especially love that kind of scene. I think people just overcomplicated in interpret the message it want to convey. Every person have their own side of version. To me that kind of scene is needed to show just how horrible goblin can act and do to their victim and how DEEP GS HATE goblin. Rightfully song convey exactly what GS thought about himself. GS is not a person exploded in rage, but his rage is the cold type. That to me is more scary than the explosion one. That's why GS is one of my favourite all time MC that I truly love
We need more Mili on here! I am very biased since I've been a massive fan of them for a couple of years now, but their style is just so unique which you cannot get anywhere else.
Mili's music is amazing, she has also done GS season 2 op and Vermeil in Gold ending, which is one of my favourite Mili songs and it even has such beautiful lyrics.
You talk about all the interesting parts of the music as a musical piece. I appreciate that perspective. I love how the music works with the lyrics to emphasize them and tell the story. The resemblance to a classical piece evoking a medieval atmosphere, It starts out calm but somber, then paints the scene burdened by regret and scars, then snapping out of those thoughts, time to get to work(killing goblins). The music gets a more "playful" tone as the line "Laughter above, playful smile" while maintaining the tension from earlier. The goblins are mocking you, but this isn't a game. Then the drums(very breakcore sounding) are added, sounding chaotic, like that of a fight. Then the shift, which sounds reminiscent of a hymn, is it a prayer for salvation, or part of an epic(which is in the making), or is it reflection on those who could not be saved? Then a shift again, but that of perspective, the sweet wistful thoughts of someone who still needs saving, which goes back both lyrically and musically back to those thoughts of regret, but this time with that off beat-sounding with the high-hat which to me invokes the image of a reel of film skipping signaling that Goblin Slayer is stuck in the past, unable to move on. Or perhaps you could see something being dragged through a dungeon, or the attempt at striking flint, trying to light a torch in a dark cave, either way it's a source of his "chains". Then the rising scales, the rising tension, the enemies closing in. Then the strings almost trail off, but don't lose any of that sense of urgency, almost like we're getting a glimpse at something else going on, but only for a moment. Then more action, more slaughter. Then finally again that hymn in another language again. Do his prayers go unanswered, or is this just the beginning of something much larger? We couldn't possibly know.
The reason this song is so bizarre because the song itself is a description of the character of Goblin Slayer. It starts peacefully, since he was a kid living carefree on a small town, but, they are attacked by Goblins, so the song starts to become more chaotic, as Goblin Slayer has to learn and adapt to keep fighting constantly... but then he starts to doubt, he remember his Sister, his only family, that died in part because of him, would she be ok with what he became? Would she want him to be what he dreamed as a child? But no, He cannot doubt, his mission is not done yet, as there are still Goblins to Slay.
there is another Goblin slayer song made by mili, it wasnt used much in the anime, basically a self insert song but its a banger... "Mili - Static" would be amazing if you reacted to it
i love Mili there ops for Goblin Slayer are some of the few ops i never skip i remember back in high school when i discovered them through a little known rhythm game called Cytus
I highly recommend watching the video on Mili's channel for this song on your own time if you enjoyed it. there's a music video with a dance choreography and it's really neat to watch
The scenes in episode 1 were needed to show how horrible and disgusting goblins are in the Goblin slayer world and to empathize with the main protagonists (goblin slayer) goal/obsession . It also showed the "worst" outcome/ending that happens when goblins are underestimated in the Goblin slayer universe, which is a very common occurrence. Later on, we are shown even more scenes of how cruel the goblins can be and again we see that, what SHOULD be a rare occurrence (the heinous acts that goblins commit) is actually common and is what drives Goblin slayer to constantly be on the hunt for Goblins.
I don't remember the opening visuals anymore, but for some reason my mind was showing some string player in the middle and around it there is fast paced goblin massacre 😅
This song is a masterpiece! Mili and Goblin Slayer are a perfect duo, i wished you turned on the subtitles since they capture Goblin Slayer's determination and quest for what's rightfully his. You should react to Within and Static by Mili as well (they're both from Goblin Slayer as well)
the show+song that introduced me to my favourite group The group's composer Yamato Kasai is indeed classically trained. Some of Mili's early stuff has no vocals and is just classical instrumentation.
That first episode is to make you as disgusted and enraged with the goblins as the main character is, so that you are from then on 110% behind him in his one man extermination mission of an entire species of parasites.
Goblin Slayer episode 1 showed it wasn't afraid to push boundaries. The point wasn't to show people that gruesome stuff. The point was to show how disgusting and evil the goblins are. It was to show how horrible things can become when you're not prepared and it kicks off why there's a goblin slayer in the first place. Why there needed to be one. Also it's a DND campaign the creator had with his friends that he made into an anime so I guess he wanted a lot of detail put into his story
Mili is one of few that mixes classical instruments, modern instruments, tempo change and voice in a unique way thats sucks listener right in... this one is 1 of my milis favourites together with Paper Bouqet... this one is calling you to the mysterious but deadly world where you kill or die... Paper bouquet is more of a giving chance to soul in a neverending bloodbath
Goblin slayer is a great series. The first episode will trigger you but shows you how much of a threat the goblins are and the cruelty that can and will take place in that world.
I think that scene in the first episode is critical. It is one thing to be told what Goblins do to women they capture, it is another thing entirely to see it with your own eyes. And in the future, if you see female adventurers going to fight Goblins, it makes you scared for her cause she has no idea what will actually happen if she is captured by them while we, the viewer, does. And not to spoil anything, but when Goblin Slayer and his party find themselves in a bind fighting Goblins in future episodes, and Goblins are trying to pin down Priestess and High Elf Archer, you have flashbacks to that scene in the first episode that makes you terrified for them. And they, especially Priestess, know firsthand what will happen to them if they are taken alive. It makes it completely understandable when she pees herself. If she, and we, did not see what the Goblins do first hand, I think Priestess would come off as cowardly and annoying in those scenes. But since we saw what she saw, in detail, we cannot blame her and would probably do the same if we were in her shoes. Basically, they made Goblins actually look like monsters and a true threat instead of the tiny insignificant monster only fit for newbies to fight like how most people see them.
Personally, I think that if they were going to add a scene like that in the first episode, they did it the way they should have. It's actually horrifying and traumatizing. It's extremely graphic and disgusting and if they pulled back even a little, I feel it would have wronged the scene and robbed the anime of the reason why Goblin Slayer dedicates his entire existence to Goblin Genocide on Reverse Flash levels of hatred.
I definitely would enjoy more goblin slayer content since Mili has done multiple songs for the series. The opening for season 2 "Entertainment", the theme for the movie "Static", and an ost from episode 12 "Within" would all be good reactions. In regards to reacting to the show and posting it, I would definitely watch to see your reaction. Episode 1 is definitely the worst in the amount that it shows, but the trauma that some characters experience and how they deal with it is relevant throughout though. Do wish the show wasn't as in your face for shock value (during the first episode especially) but the story, world, and characters are all super enjoyable for me.
FWIW, I think people are just used to Anime skipping / censoring the kind of shit Manga pulls all the time. In this case they deemed it worth keeping because it did a good job of painting the Goblins, the damage they do, and the trauma that arises from that, in a more serious light, which is basically the premise of the entire story. Yes, they could have done it with just raw violence, I don't disagree that it would have worked, but I also don't see it as necessary to censor something when the entire point is for it to be horrid. If it turned into a weird fetish fanservice thing instead of what it was meant to be, it'd be a problem, but that's not what it was.
I think the scene in ep 1 is nesseary it very well explains one of the main reasons goblin slayers dispises goblins especially with his backstory in ep 2
the first episode is not the only time it happens the whole point of the show is to portray that these creatures are truly monsters and there's a reason why there's someone in this world wants to dedicate his life to killing all of them also its their only way to reproduce because there are no female goblins so its them surviving by doing horrendous things to humans.
Thaco went so hard in dnd, 3.5 edition was my entrance to dnd and i touched fifth edition twice but the spark wasnt there, learned about cyberpunk red last year though and now I'm a certified dm!
You should check out dungeon meshi next season. It’s gonna be a great one. Also the opening has already released. “Sleep Walking Orchestra” by BUMP OF CHICKEN
I think youd enjoy Within, also by Mili. It has a really nice sound to it in my opinion, and feels like something that would get a good reaction. I could be biased though cuz i really like the song
First episode bothered me but for opposite reasons. I heard about the manga and that it was super brutal and hardcore, with goblins as the primary threat above all. But a few episodes in seemed more and more like a decently executed but generic fantasy anime. Theres a guild, and theres plenty of other monsters like dragonslayers. But goblins just happened to be ignored a lot. Felt like it dangled episode 1 for shock value to get attention when it doesnt really represent what happens in the rest of the show. At least as far as ive watched. *(To clarify i dont want every episode to be like the first one obviously. Just that it used that extremeness as a dishonest cover to grab eyeballs)*
This was the song that got me into mili, no i think ga1ahad and scientific witchery is my favorite of the group and absolutely love the album "to kill a living book" made for library of ruina
Episode 1 can be kind of rough if you're not as dessensitized to this sort of stuff and can't really power through it, but it is very important. It shows just how much you should despise Goblins, it builds this deep disgust for them that then into catharsis every time GS rips one apart. It also shows how dangerous they can be when contrasted to how unseriously people take them
you know how in a lot of fantasy h3ntais the goblins are always doing the dirty on girls, to me Goblin Slayer is the response to that. that's why the first episode is presented in such a way, it literally plays out like how a h3ntai would usually go. in those h3ntais, the girls are always helpless, always the victim, and there's never a savior in sight. Goblin Slayer is the response to that trope.

Mili is a quite amazing band, completely indipendany as well, they rely on their fans rather through patreon.
So Mili works well with an anime based on DND since for a long time DND was very underground.
All their music is quite different from each other, my personal favorite song is "Bathtub Mermaid".
You have to know that this song was actually written, right after they read the original manga. The lyrics are absolutely perfect.
Spice and Wolf, March Comes in Like a Lion and Vinland Saga too
Overlord too
Heavely delusion too
gimme moarrr
Link Click too! (It’s a donghua tho)
Mili is an awesome and unique band! I really recommend you to check out Goblin Slayer s2 OP (it's better IMO) and their other works as well.
the song itself is a matter of personal opinion, so thats understandable. the opening as a whole (meaning visuals alongside sound) is really a downgrade from the previous. you have generic camera pans, unfitting sound to visuals since the visuals are muuuuch more intense than the sound, mediocre storytelling and concept since you don't really get whats the premise of the show and deeper meaning of whats going on from whats going on screen, and the overall storyboard doesn't get you nearly as hyped to see the show as it did with the first opening.
OP serves as the introduction or an overview of what's about to happen in an arc/season
agreed, the 2nd OP is more fitting for Goblin Slayer in terms of overall aspect.
So Glad you listened to Mili. Can't wait to see how you breakdown future musical arrangements!
One of my favourite anime openings. The version that they use for the anime cuts off the wacky bits near the end tho so it was interesting hearing them here lol
I really think that the strings section really loves their part in this song. I really loved this song especially when I first heard this.
Great reaction pointing out all of the cool elements in the piece! Would love to see this series on the patreon one day.
Paper Banquet was my first Mili song, really unique vocals and arrangements from them, thanks for the video!
Here I am, from the chaos of the youtube's algorithm that brought me there.
I really like your work and how you "dissected" this song.
As for the anime, the first episode looks like a mix of "look how raw we are !" + the ennemy is dangerous + the main characters are cute and badass. Quite a regular thing to do when you want to last more than 7 episodes as an anime (I don't judge, I really enjoyed watching both seasons)
Once again : bravo (for your analysis on this theme I can listen to, over and over again)
I’ve been waiting such a long time for you to react to the goblin slayer op. Now we need you to react to op2 haha
Mili has an entire discography of amazing performances. She has such a unique voice and style and is one of my personal favorite artists
This dude has the most based DnD take and I was not expecting that! Much love, mang.
the first episode was a must needed to show how the world it was...it is a dark anime
there is another Goblin slayer song made by mili, it wasnt used much in the anime, basically a self insert song but its a banger...
"Mili - Static"
would be amazing if you reacted to it
You sound like a happy music teacher
To Hit Armor Class 0! All my teenage years came cascading down after watching that.... good times. thank you, man!
Such a cute voice.
The first season is great and difficult at times. The second tries to keep up with the greatness of the first.
Mili describes themselves as a contemporary classic band so you were very close
i love Mili there ops for Goblin Slayer are some of the few ops i never skip i remember back in high school when i discovered them through a little known rhythm game called Cytus
And still Goblin Slayer is pretty mild when you consider stuff that comes from Japan. Plus second season is very censored compared to manga.
@NekuPL yeah, fairly tame, especially compared to 80/90s stuff and s2 does seem different but Idk
I don't remember the opening visuals anymore, but for some reason my mind was showing some string player in the middle and around it there is fast paced goblin massacre 😅
This OP is fire as the entire season 🔥 1-12 🎲
10:50 is a reference to goblin slayers master quoteing something about a nail and a coffin
At least that’s what I think it is
And here I'm waiting for 86 musics 😶
You have to check out OP 2. Basically this song, but even better
This song is a masterpiece! Mili and Goblin Slayer are a perfect duo, i wished you turned on the subtitles since they capture Goblin Slayer's determination and quest for what's rightfully his. You should react to Within and Static by Mili as well (they're both from Goblin Slayer as well)
All of Mili song for Goblin Slayer is very good and addictive. Especially Static. That song is so good.
Goblin slayer has such an underrated opening the show itself too. It has very mature material but it’s a fun watch
The Ending song is also really great, definitely worth a reaction video.
The shit in the first episode is there so u see just how much of a problem goblin can be this aint your average fantasy anime brev \(•_•)/
the show+song that introduced me to my favourite group
The group's composer Yamato Kasai is indeed classically trained. Some of Mili's early stuff has no vocals and is just classical instrumentation.
My favorite band since i found them from deemo,i hope you react another mili song like In hell we live/between two world
Tge first episode explains to you why its there is a light-hearted tone about a group of characters following a policy of genocide and infanticide.
IMO that scene was included both for shock value that will get buzzing and bring viewers and to show us as viewers that these things do happen.
Season 2 opening is fire. I highly recommend.
You are one mili song away from falling down the project moon rabbithole,
Now this is how to review music.
its the red book and bring nostalgic to the 70-80's
That first episode is to make you as disgusted and enraged with the goblins as the main character is, so that you are from then on 110% behind him in his one man extermination mission of an entire species of parasites.
The instrumental version is on youtube for anyone interested in hearing it without the vocals.
Thanks for reviewing first, but second OP is even better. Please request second someday
Episode one sets the tone, stakes and motivation for Goblin Slayer. Its not tasteless.
Yay, more Mili!
Oh no a Mili reaction. I can hear Project Moon approaching. 😭
IM THERE WHEN MILI IS MENTION!
Welp, time to dive more into MILI songs!
I think the scene in ep 1 is nesseary it very well explains one of the main reasons goblin slayers dispises goblins especially with his backstory in ep 2
You have to listen to Though Our Paths May Diverge from Goblin slayer ofc trust me its great
the first episode is not the only time it happens the whole point of the show is to portray that these creatures are truly monsters and there's a reason why there's someone in this world wants to dedicate his life to killing all of them also its their only way to reproduce because there are no female goblins so its them surviving by doing horrendous things to humans.
You should watch the season two op, "entertainment" by Mili
Thaco went so hard in dnd, 3.5 edition was my entrance to dnd and i touched fifth edition twice but the spark wasnt there, learned about cyberpunk red last year though and now I'm a certified dm!
What is Cyberpunk red? 👀
You gotta listen to the season 2 op too its so good
You should check out dungeon meshi next season. It’s gonna be a great one. Also the opening has already released. “Sleep Walking Orchestra” by BUMP OF CHICKEN
Mr DrumRollTony needs to react to Camelia by Mili!
Yamato Kasai IS from Classical Music Major so its not weird to hear all the classical music
please do the second opening, it's similar but even better
Point of episode 1 was to establish their behavior. Knowing what they’ll do if given the chance is part of the threat the pose
We gotta get more mili reactions
How can one tell it's 3/4 time signature without the sheet music? I'd love to be able to do that
Just by listening. Ear gets used to it over time
Who else wants his to listen to entertainment by Mili as well
i been waiting for this! Songs great and theres not a lot reaction for this song sadly
Just that it used that extremeness as a dishonest cover to grab eyeballs)*
he should do more mili songs
This was the song that got me into mili, no i think ga1ahad and scientific witchery is my favorite of the group and absolutely love the album "to kill a living book" made for library of ruina
now the second opening is a must isnt it
sir the op 2 are soo good too
Episode 1 can be kind of rough if you're not as dessensitized to this sort of stuff and can't really power through it, but it is very important.
Second opening is awesome too. You need to react! You always teach me something new. Thanks.
You might like String Theocracy from Library of Ruina game that Mili sang as intro for the game.
You should checkout the main theme as well, that ost was a banger
