I really appreciate that you took the time to show your viewers what is up with the all the water flowing through the canals to southern California. So much misinformation out there in the world.
Thank you, Zeke, for all that you do to provide intelligent, factual, and experience-based wildfire analysis. Our son, who was a PCF in San Luis Obispo, turned us on to your channel. During the first week of the Palisades fire, you became our most trustworthy source for reporting actual progress and educating us on the behind-the-scenes work being done around the clock. Your reporting style inspires confidence in the capabilities of fire fighters who must deal with unforgiving weather and terrain. Thank you for all that you do.
Thank you for talking about the SWP. Im a geographer living in the Delta and there is so much going on here like the construction of Delta Conveyance Project to divert more water to LA. The Delta supplies water to about 23 million Californians, and so much politics is wrapped around it. Water districts from LA are even buying land in the Delta to likely get more power to get construction of the tunnel completed too. Similar to what happened with Owen's Valley and LA buying settler's land for water rights.
Thanks, Zeke; that recap on California water movement is timely. CDWR is, like you mentioned, the biggest electricity user in California, so much so that they participate in the yearly blackout drills that the state utilities perform in spring/summer. CDWR plays two roles in those drills. Firstly, they can free up generation by turning off their pumps, and secondly, they can provide electricity to the grid with the generators they operate on the downhill runs of delivery route. (CDWR recaptures power pulled by their pumps on the northern sides of the mountains with their generators on the southern slopes.) The largest generators are at the head of Castaic Lake, and are operated by Los Angeles department of water and power. The state was going to place a small generator there, but L.A. planners intervened with a plan to place 1,200 MW of generation there instead, and provide the state with an equivalent amount of power that would have been generated by the water that flows through on its way to the water users (Metropolitan Water District - a consortium of water suppliers).
Homeowner in Meyers and ever since your coverage of the Caldor fire, there is nowhere else where I know I will get accurate information and deep understanding of how a fire is likely to behave and why. Thank you.
Lived in xmas valley next door to Meyers for 15sh years and was in Stateline top of Kingsbury when Caldor. Been around this channel since those days as well, great info indeed. Lived in Topanga just a ridge over from Palisades for many years before moving to Tahoe. For awhile had a home both places. Crazy fires been hitting all my stomping grounds across the state.
@@thereseember2800 I see sheep herders with thousands of sheep going around Sierra mountains fairly often. Started seeing them over last decade. First time while camping middle of nowhere was wtf is going on. A see of sheep kept walking buy for over 2 hours lol I know some people in Topanga(palisades fire) who were paying to have their properties grazed yearly. Not public lands though.
Poor Californians! Hope that this might end soon, wishing you all the best of luck and that those firefighters, policemen and -women, pilots and helpers will be able to pause for a while 🙏🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀 With love from Germany 🇩🇪
Zeke, thanks for explaining the water flow from the feather river and delta all the way down south. I always knew about the acquaducts (?), but never saw a map. The HS comment, thank you 😊
Yep. People not familiar with the California water system do not reaize 99% of the water in Castaic Lake comes from the north. It's theoretically possible for some of that water to originate in Oregon via the Pit River.
Thank you for your sober assessments. I wish the media would cover fires like you do and give us facts, not sensationalism. Would do a lot to head off the politicians who use these as cudgels against their made up enemies.
Well Zeke loos like you picked the right year to leave the pesky day job, here we are late January talking active fire. I’m sure you have other Lookout projects planned for this time of year but here we are. Thanks as always.
It would be great if at some point you could zoom out far enough so those of us who are not very familiar with the geography of California could get our barrings and a clear understanding of where the fire is on the map in relation to places we do know, ie the greater Los Angeles area and the Pacific Ocean.
The last five minutes the best! I am researching the Wachusett Reservoir, taking 4 towns early 1900 to water Boston with unfiltered drinking water. The natural rivers and wildlife was ruined and added so many reservoirs and basins and large dead tree areas, water and Power companies OWN this field
I remember Castaic when there was just a Mexican Restaurant and Truckstop between two Intersections on Interstate 5 10-12 years later, everywhere you looked, 'NO TRUCK PARKING.' The place would not have existed if it wasn't for the trucks. Now, is this area part of the burn no idea, but my heart doesn't weep for all the commercialization that drove the truckers away. Should it burn up.
If so, why? Why would anyone start a fire that they would be pretty sure might get big, out of control? What would the motivation be? Or isn’t arson involved
Thanks for the update, and showing the routes of nor cal water. Many will say "Oh so cal isnt getting hardly any water from nor cal" Classic mis-information they probably heard on FOX. In a dry year that water really matters.
Wow Zeke, that fire went exactly where you predicted it would. I don't mean to sound condescending I'm new to your channel-- maybe you do this regularly-- it's new to me. And thanks for the info on the water supply. I'll resist political comment, thanks for facts!
Really enjoy your content and your perspective. I don't know if it's possible, but if you could pin a compass on your maps it would be a great help. It's helpful to orient your maps as you rotate the view. Also, I would ask you to consider using military time to make your presentation more clear. Thanks in advance, great info! xxx
I hope you have more eps about Water. I live in socal and hope there are ways we can help /volunteer to share this info and any solutions that can help solve these problems.
I'd love one of your mus, but I'm put off by the cost & dangers of shipping to the UK. Maybe if I ever get back to your corner of the USA I'll pick one up.
I am so disappointed that you dropped your coverage of the Hughes fire; as I understand it as of today (1/28/25) it is 95% contained but the “news media” dropped coverage on that fire Friday night/Saturday morning. Your coverage was an important purgative for all the b.s. on the rest of the world of chatter. I can only imagine how hard it must be to find yourself in the middle of a veritable maelstrom when all you are doing is dealing w/facts and your knowledge &experience.
I really appreciate that you took the time to show your viewers what is up with the all the water flowing through the canals to southern California. So much misinformation out there in the world.
Aliens stole it

Even though I reside on the East Coast, I’m really impressed and loving your calm insight and 30 years experience with California wildfires.
Thx for the water route education…..very informative and makes sense! 👍
You are so on point. Please keep providing these update & insights on how to move forward

Life long CA guy and my Wife went to school in Chico. Thanks for the update and education. Looking forward to those Axes!!
Thank you for the professional appraisal, enlightening.

Excellent update on Hughes Fire..Thank you Robert Nessier..
I'm alwsts impressed by your knowledgeable reporting. Thank you for your incredible accurate reporting!!

Dear Zeke, Do you know if permanent grazing goats (to prevent wildfires) is being proposed in CA? Thank you.

wasn't expecting this talk to be so interesting but i'm fascinated listening to zeke talk
My daughter picked the blue hat. ❤ its perfect
thanks for that explanation, at the end, of the water flow through California.
Thank you so much. Love The Lookout mugs!
The state water bit at the end was nice
Thank you for the thorough, detailed explanations, as always! It helps to calm our disaster fatigue. The mugs are great!
Outstanding! This info is inspiring, love your teaching and ideas👍

Yes,it's crazy to think that once upon a time, water from oregon would end up in the san francisco bay.
@ It still does. The Sacramento River headwaters is the Pit River, which has tributaries almost all the way to Lakeview, Oregon.
Wow. Shocked at how fast it’s developed in 30 minutes.
Really appreciate the explanation about water flow. Great job!
Thank you for your sober assessments. I wish the media would cover fires like you do and give us facts, not sensationalism. Would do a lot to head off the politicians who use these as cudgels against their made up enemies.
I’m a potter too! Mugs are very fun.
Amazed by the amounts of ash that ended up on my patio in Ventura.
Great detailed info! Thank you! Much appreciated !
Well Zeke loos like you picked the right year to leave the pesky day job, here we are late January talking active fire. I’m sure you have other Lookout projects planned for this time of year but here we are. Thanks as always.
Thanks for the informative update.
Thank you 🙏
Furst time here, excellent coverage. I used to live in Alta Dena and Valencia.I really hope they can stop it at I5
Thank you!!!!!
Thank you thank you thank you!
The Santa Ana's just don't stop!

Bearings
If you look up Castaic Lake on something like Google maps, you can zoom out and see where it is in relation to the rest of CA.
Type "Castaic Lake, California" into Google Maps or better yet, Google Earth search window & hit Enter.
Thanks Zeke for the update. Hopefully you'll be able to follow up during the night or early in the morning.
Thank you
Your last 30 seconds of commentary was priceless, starting at 23:56.
Fun Hat and logo.. like the Trucker 70's look.
Wow nice mugs!
Silver lining - 4,000 fire fighters on site from previous fires.
Ceramics… blacksmithing… wildfires… it’s like there’s some kind of theme going on here but I can’t put my finger on it.
Great commentary, thanks for your knowledge, glad I stumbled onto your channel
Great intel and explainer. Especially the part about "horse shit" comments from you-know-who. Truth prevails.
Thank you.
Add your merch website to description.
Saw a fire tornado go up a hill and then back down same hill -
Did any of the Altadena homes have wood-shake roofs?
well done to make your own merch... i'm guessing you're one of the few that have things actually made in america.

Make more mugs. Sold out !
I need that cap.
Solid content.
Thanks, I have a daughter in the Santa Clarita area and I can't get info like what you put out. Thanks for your info.

Can you check out the fire in the Tahoe National forest in Sierra City? So far 2 acres
Mugs need to be really stable.
How did this fire start? This one stared up on the mountain? Are there downed electric lines up there?
Where is your Thursday update on the Hughes fire?
It's out, we didn't have a report, tonight.
❓Is this the same Hughes Fire as from like 10-14 days ago ?
Do you think there is arson going on?
If so, why? Why would anyone start a fire that they would be pretty sure might get big, out of control? What would the motivation be? Or isn’t arson involved
Where can I download these fire layers for Google Earth ? Curious to see the history of my neighborhood

fine for the fishies but that still doesnt explain why the Eaton Canyon and Palisades reservoirs where emplty
Nor does it explain what happened to my pliers. I set them on the dryer and now......?
Ugh! Why am I getting your Live notifications 35 minutes AFTER you stream?
I’ll kick in for a new hard drive or SSD if anyone is taking up a collection.
I'd love one of your mus, but I'm put off by the cost & dangers of shipping to the UK.

Do burning tumbleweeds roll while containing their own embers?
There's a new fire? Sepulveda fire at the 405??
