    I read up on the Japanese Privet, and according to several info, the privet is toxic to dogs, and the berries a mess. Its invasive and the flowers got a very strong smell.

      Podocarpus gracilior, Ligustrum texanum would be two decent choices. Also look at Dodonaea purpurea and Prunus caroliniana

    My landscaper planted many Japanese Privets on my neighbor's fence line for privacy. He planted them 5 feet apart... Based on this video, I am now concerned they will never be a true privacy screen! Should I add an additional Japanese Privet in between each tree?

    • @BudgetPlants
      @BudgetPlants  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! 5 feet apart is definitely a little more than recommended for a solid hedge. They would quite possibly fill in eventually, but it would take a very long time. I would say to plant more in between for a little bit more instant gratification :)

    I planted four last year to start a hedge. It's almost spring and I want to encourage faster growth. Should I prune with hedge trimmer? And should I remove the wooden stakes that came with the plant or leave them in? Should I prune off the top as well?

    Hi Dominic, love your videos and thank you for all the helpful info . Have a quick question. We planted these about 9 months ago and would like a privacy hedge that will grow to about 6feet. They are the right height now . Do we pull the stakes or leave them in ? How do we promote the sideways growth? We are In southern Ca and they get lots of sunshine . They are watered every other day for ten minutes with a drip system !?
    Any advice would help a ton ! Thank you so much

    • @BudgetPlants
      @BudgetPlants  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey! Thanks for watchin. I’d pull the stakes out about two years after planting. The stems should be ridged enough to hold themselves up. But if not, maybe keep them in another growing season. Trim longer branches that may be growing out or ‘flopping’ over to help promote inner and side growth.

    Hi all, I'm getting ready to plant 30 of these (they're about 3ft high in container). Should I break up the root balls and "cut" a few line on the ball along sides and the bottom when planting?

    • @BudgetPlants
      @BudgetPlants  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! No I would not significantly disturb the root ball. Sometimes a light teasing of the roots is good if they appear to be very dense, but generally it’s not needed.

    Couple of questions. If this ligustrum is watered via drip irrigation how many emmitters and what size (gph) would you recommend. How many times and for how long would you run the emmiters weekly. I know it varies by region and season but let's say spring in climate that gets around 85 degrees with no rain.

    • @BudgetPlants
      @BudgetPlants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jose, here in So Cal I usually do two, 2GPH fixed emitters. Then I’ll run them for 30-40 min twice a week. In some cases can just be once a wee with a deeper watering of 60 min (depends on many factors...soil type, climate etc). For new plants, they need water every day. Hope this helps!

    What kind of fertilizer do these plants require? Should I trim to encourage height??

    • @BudgetPlants
      @BudgetPlants  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A general purpose time release fertilizer is good. Well balanced, like a 10-10-10 ratio. Yes.. trimming will encourage tighter more dense growth and Moses stability as it grows taller.

      Fungi and molds can definitely affect this plant. It should not be overwatered. With that said, it’s less susceptible than many others.

    hi Dominic, recently planted 6 small privets about month half ago, full sun, here in NorCal, been watering everyday cuz no rain here. I planted them perfectly, not covering the trunk. last three weeks the edges of the leaves turned yellow, then later curling, and now falling off, starting from the top of shrubs... looks like dying. any thoughts?... maybe over watering? the native soil is rather hard, how about fertilizer? thx.. on further inspection just now, there are small white bumbs on the woody stems? is this normal? thanks again, I enjoy ur vids, in fact I've got three Hopbush doing great from your video.

    • @BudgetPlants

      Scale are small insects that attach themselves to the plant, usually at the stem. If it’s just a small amount, you can sometimes just rub them off, or dab that area with an alcohol swab. Neem oil can be used to treat larger infested areas.

      Most folks keep the Ligustrum texanum about that height for a hedge. If left to grow I trimmed, it would eventually hit 12-15’ max, but it would take a really long time. Not sure if any dwarf varieties.

    How fast do they grow?

    • @BudgetPlants
      @BudgetPlants  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve seen them put on about 12 to 16 inches in height in a year. I’d consider these a moderate growth rate. Something faster would be the Ficus nitida, but then you have to worry about heavy root systems as well as heavy maintenance. So there’s a trade-off for fast growth. Hope this helps!
