    Season 20 DVD vs Blu-ray Playlist - th-cam.com/play/PLeHb4El-ZtarXd47pQ0ss1b7KOD4yxfRL.html
    All three versions presented on the Blu-ray Discs, Original Transmission, Special Edition and 40th Anniversary Edition have the same restoration of videotape and included HD restored Film Inserts. So although the booklet only seems to specifically mention the 40th Anniversary as having the HD film Inserts, worry not as they are included in every version.
    The 40th Anniversary Edition doesn’t really make any sense as it’s just the transmission version with new CGI effects, and apart from the new time scoop capture effect, the new effects are ghastly and unnecessary and not only are the new effects on the Raston Warrior Robot pointless and bad they are actually forgotten on a few shots, really bad quality control and checking going on. It’s a shame they didn’t do a re-edit or anything for it and to go back to the transition version seems pretty regressive as the Soecial Edition edit is superior.
    My ranking then is:
    1) Special Edition
    2) Transmission Version
    3) 40th Anniversary

      Many people dislike the Special Edition though, so I can see why they did it like that.

      As someone who hasn’t seen the 40th anniversary version yet (my set showed up yesterday), what about it makes it last on the list?

    • @tjdw5251
      @tjdw5251  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thetasigma412 well so as I mentioned, I think that the longer Special Edition edit is a superior cut of the story (effects aside, which i could either take or leave), so going back to the transmission cut and just adding new effects to that, which is what they have done, feels backwards as I dont think that the pacing and everything is as good on the original Transmission cut. And then other than the time scoop new effect which i like as it is like an update of the original effect, all the new CGI effects are horrible, in particular adding effects to the Raston Warrior Robot teleportation is wildly distracting and ruins the scene and then in that scene they have actually forgotten and missed out the new cgi effects on some of the teleportation shots, so it is wildly inconsistent and it only takes someone to watch it to see that is has been missed out, so not every good quality control on it. So for me it is like the original transmission version but worse and I like the special edition cut the most, so thats why the order is the way it is for me. I dont usually mind the new CGI versions by the way, its just that here they are so distracting as cheap CGI AND the main thing is is that they were just shoved everywhere unnecessarily. But yh just my opinion, although it is a fact that they have missed some of the effects on some shots and that is just bad.

    • @thetasigma412
      @thetasigma412 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tjdw5251 sounds fair enough. Yeah, it baffles me that they would use the original transmission cut instead of upgrading the special edition. On my next rewatch I’ll probably just watch the special edition again :)

      Love the upgrades and the new SFX.
      My only quibble, "and this was just a personal dream of mine, so its not a failing on their part) was I wish that the Death Zone could have had some colour grading and post-FX-matte paintings added so that it somewhat resembled the orange/ochre hued world of Gallifrey we've come to know in later years.

    I agree… I wish they’d used the extended SE version and updated the effects in that one. But mostly I like what they did, with the exception of the Raston Warrior Robot effects. I also wish they’d done some new CGI for the faces along the sides of Rassilon’s tomb. It’s too obviously silver/grey painted faces behind a plastic “mask”.

    Nice uptick on the location shots but sadly very little improvement on the studio footage which can make for a bit of a jarring change with these releases. At least they have stopped the agressive sharpening of video footage which left some edges and screen ringing previously.

    I like the increased contrast (up to a point) of the new film scenes, but the muted, cool colours look terrible! Surely there’s usually an attempt to maintain the overall look of the original?!

      Agreed.
      I know it was freezing on location, but people with blue / purple faces does look terrible.
      I prefer the warmer (less accurate) grading for the filmed sequences from the 2008 2-disc DVD SE release.

    • @stevetayler9518
      @stevetayler9518 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Personally (and I know this wouldn't be just colour grading but a whole new FX job) I'd have liked it if the Death Zone scenes had been altered, with some added background composition, to make them look like the orange hues of Gallifrey in the new series.

  • @richardmattocks
    @richardmattocks 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Isn’t it funny… we always had the “warm” look to film (I’m assuming as a result of how the original telecine system works with incandescent lamps etc) but the cooler colour temperature from a fresh scan of the 16mm film (that I assume uses LED’s) gives a look is more natural once you see it.
    Like the “studio look” of electronic cameras, it was just how it was but in the modern era, we don’t see those colours anymore. Even smartphones render photos in the more realistic tones.
    Isn’t technology awesome! 😎

    I already have the original DVD and, on the evidence of this, I wouldn’t bother buying the Blu-ray version. Some of the shots look almost unchanged; others gain a bit more detail, but also get darker and grainier, and overall look worse. With modern software, they ought to be able to do better. Seems like incompetence to me, or possibly a rushed job due to lack of money.
    For example, denoising grainy photos is a common software function, available everywhere, but they don’t know about it or haven’t bothered to use it. The lighting and colour balance need obvious adjustments. I think they’ve just done an automatic conversion with no adjustments at all: a shoddy job.

      @@jonathan.palfrey while the brightness and colours of the film shots on the blu ray are maybe up for debate. The actual image quality, resolution and clarity of the blu ray image isn't. It is unequivocally better than the DVD.

    • @jonathan.palfrey
      @jonathan.palfrey 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@tjdw5251 So what? I have both DVDs and BDs in my collection, and to be honest I hardly notice the difference in resolution, in practice, although I know there is a difference. I’m watching the characters acting out the story. If I get worse-looking images at higher resolution, to hell with it. I’d rather have the better-looking images at lower resolution. The higher resolution is an advantage only if the result actually looks better.
      However, as I said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If high resolution is what turns you on above all other considerations, then pursue it by all means.
