Imagine caring about the Mona Lisa one day, and then the next day you, your son, your brother, your father, your cousin, your uncle, your nephew, etc. are bein drafted to fight in the deadliest war in human history. At least, the deadliest one up to that point.

The most interesting part is the fact that everyone at first thought it'd be like the old times, and it wouldn't last that long, and the boys will be back by Christmas. Everyone was in ecstasy, because every nation had a perfect reason/excuse to enter it. Be it protection of our orthodox brothers (Russia), revenge for the last humiliation (France), claiming place under the sun (Germany), avenging dead crown prince (Austria), total and final unification of all Italians (Italy), etc. etc.

    Fun fact!
There are two other Mona Lisa portraits beside the Louve Lisa.
One is seen in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain, and as such is called the Mona Lisa Prado. This one is speculated to have been the work of one of Leonardo's students who took his copy with him back to Spain. It has more color and lacks that yellowish-green hue compared to the original.
The other is the Islesworth Mona Lisa. Originally seen as a copy of the original painted by one of Leonardo's acquaintances, there's now speculation as to whether or not that it's actually an earlier draft of the original. This one also lacks the hue of the original and is a bit darker. Additionally, it is also the portrait of a younger Mona Lisa and that the background may not have been done by Leonardo but by someone else.
It went on display in Turin, Italy at the Promotrice delle Belle Arti gallery in 2023. In 2024, it went back into a private collection in Switzerland, according to Wikipedia.

That sounds like Stéphane Breitwieser, the French guy that stole about $2 Billion worth of Art over a 6 year period, just for fun.
He robbed 239 pieces from 172 different Museums around Europe.
One Painting was worth $10 million alone. But he never tried to sell any of them. He kept them all coz he loved Art.
It was the late 1990's and him & his missus just travelled around Europe robbing Art from Galleries. They didn't plan heists or anything like that. They would just walk out the door with pieces they liked.
Some of the Art was never recovered because they had stolen so much that they ran out of space in their gaff and started hiding them in places they forgot.
When he was finally caught I think either his missus or his Father tried getting rid of them by throwing them in a lake behind their gaff. Think they might've tried to burn some too. Can't remember exactly.
But it sounded like a wild ride. He didn't get much prison time either. Can't remember the reason why he didn't get a bigger sentence. Probably coz he was nuts.
Think he wrote a book about it too.

      Lol, you better believe it.
He always reminds me of the Pink Panther Peter Sellers movie.
Saw a short documentary style thing about him on TH-cam & it was just so bizarre it was hard to believe. Then checked out his Wikipedia & it backed up everything & more. There's loads of info there about him.
Like the fact he was working as a waiter in restaurants, struggling for cash & barely making ends meet, while having millions of dollars of Art sitting at home.
And I think he only met his missus while already robbing Art. IIRC he brought her on a date to a Museum & stole a piece while they were there. And obviously she was well into it. ❤️‍🩹
It was love at first heist.
But the fact he ran out of room for the loot & then started throwing it in a lake shows how amateur they were & how little effort they put into the whole thing.
Don't know how there hasn't been a movie made about him.

I do, I do, even though that's totally crazy and unbelievable ! 😂 I've unfortunately never watched that Pink Panther movie but I just was wondering if they made a movie about this guy... Now I'm truly disappointed ! He was an idiot for hiding the art pieces in places he couldn't remember or throwing them in the lake though. I personally could never, it really breaks my heart to read that. Dude was just crazy because an art lover wouldn't have done that or maybe he's the type to think that if he can't hate it, then no one can have it...

I'm assuming there's never been a movie but I might see if there's one made in Europe about him.
On his Wiki it says he's an Author so I assume he wrote an Autobiography.
It is sad that they didn't get all the Art back. Think they got the majority of it. But there are some pieces that were never recovered.
There was a big criminal here in Ireland years ago called the General. He did a massive heist of an Art Gallery in the eighties & stole some paintings by Renoir.
He thought he'd sell them back & get paid by the Insurance company.
But it turned out they weren't even Insured so nobody would pay up.
Some of them were recovered over the years. But he was shot & murdered in the mid nineties before they were all retrieved. And he went to the grave without telling anyone where they were stashed. So his secret died with him.
The problem is he was known to hide loot up in the Wicklow mountains, which is a massive area going on for miles, and lots of forests. So the chances of them even being found by accident is almost impossible. It's been 40+ years now so if they were gonna turn up, they would've by now. So you'd have to assume they're gone.
Renoir's were worth millions at the time. So they would be priceless now. Especially because they've been lost for so long.

Yes, please, let me know if you can find anything. 🙏
Yeah but even if it was most of them, just thinking that just 1 painting was destroyed makes me sad and angry...
Why that General guy didn't even try to sell them to art collectors ? Today that might be hard to sell stolen art pieces but in the 80s... Hmm, isn't it weird ? 🤔 Yeah, they're certainly lost forever now, and even if some were found today, in what state would they be ? I love Renoir's paintings, this is terrible. I had never heard about these stories before.
