Okay, after a lot of trial and error: Selecting a Russian cyrillic type language was the key. Got the intl keyboard symbol, then from there you get into TH-cam, then from there eventually Chrome, then gotospecific website, leading to setting of Android where PIN can be reset to one that you choose, then restart the install from scratch and use that PIN. Thanks for your insight into this workaround. And if I ever find the owner that handed in his/her phone to our Charity for recycling without resetting it properly first I will give them a right talking to.
