The 1988 Australian Grand Prix support race 'The South Australia Cup' for Group A Touring Cars was held on the Adelaide street circuit on November 12, 1988. Dick Johnson started on pole.
"Most of the top runners had made the trip to New Zealand, but unlike the previous year's dramas all were back in time to prepare for the last race on Australian soil for 1988. However, the entry included no Moffat or Petch Sierras, while Pukekohe-winner Andrew Miedecke was racing at the Intertec 500 in Japan."
"Sierras lead from the start, but the hot conditions soon gets to them; Longhurst blows a head gasket, while both Shell cars struggle with heat-related misfires. Into the lead surge the two HSV Commodores of Perkins and Denny Hulme, to record the General's only win of 1988. It is also the marque's first win since race 1 of the 1987 AMSCAR series, and their last until the 1990 Tooheys 1000." - William Dale Jr (tentenths.com 2011)

Being there to watch this race go down, right at the last hairpin, all the turbo cars sounded sick, the Sierras and the Skylines. They really did look like they were just going to run away with it but then they started burbling and popping like they had the worst flatulence imaginable and just couldn't pick up speed along the pit strait. Even Bond, who finished third, was having trouble.

The takeaway from this that I found is the mobile phone sponsorship on the. boots of the Walkenshaw Commodores. In 1988 that's leading edge...

38:46 a sight for Holden fans! A thumping VL Walkinshaw flying past an embarrassed Ford Sierra chucking up in the shade!

Within two years the walkinshaw VLs were eating up the Sierras 👍

As a life-long Adelaide resident.....I wish they would use the full length Grand Prix circuit for the Clipsal.

    Thanks for this :-)
I believe this was Perkins' first ever win in Group A racing and his first win in Australia since Bathurst 1984.

+Dave Aston Drums I am confident that it was the first race win for the HSV rather than the HDT VL Commodore SS Group A.

THIS ONE IS A DOOZY for HOLDEN FANS!...
Longhurst blows a PopOff Valve on his overcooked Steam Engine!
At the 11.30 mark, Johnson Sierras are full steam ahead & exFormula One World Champion A.J. advises us to watch the Holdens as they'll begin to slide around more & more.
Noisy commentary fails to drown out sweet sounding booming Larry Perkins' V8 Holden punching out big numbers and pushing the imported Whizz BANG shitcans beyond their breaking point with shear grunt & absolute durability on tap.
The Whizz BANG imports ALL ultimately go BANG, grind to a halt or just fizzle & die.
And... The Holdens do actually start to slide kind of like Allan Jones said they would, except they slide straight into FIRST & SECOND PLACE IN TIME TO GREET THE CHECQUERED FLAG!
    A CLASSIC RACE!
The much adored & genuinely durable local product gets up & flogs up the more powerful force fed whizz BANG imported toy cars only available to precious wealthy snowflakes & racing teams.
Many Thanks to LARRY PERKINS, DENNY HULME & TOM WALKINSHAW for all the blood, sweat & tears they invested to put on such a brilliant show of strength which showcased our locally built family cars & the staggering quality & durability that went into them.
Congratulations to all who still own great Holden cars. We may never see any more new ones. That doesn't really bother us, because the old ones we have were built to last. So long as the gods permit it, our Holdens will just keep on going.

Brock's last win in a Holden prior to the 1992 season (ATCC R1 Heat 1) was Bathurst 1987 after being awarded the Bathurst win as a result of the disqualification of the Texaco Ford Sierras being upheld

How good does that E30 M3 sound!!!

    • @johnbrooks9523
      @johnbrooks9523 ปีที่แล้ว

It sorta sounds better than a fart in a jar?
Not sure it sounds better than a billy goat pissing in a tin?
Kind of makes a V12 Jag sound like a 50 foot hacksaw blade through a half crushed beer can.
Erm..... I think Larry's booming little Holden V8 actually sounds about 60 GAZZILLION TIMES BETTER!
Maybe even A.J.s commentary sounds better too?
