Had a great and interesting time staying in Ipanema for a week, it was scary at times but nothing like you filmed. Like others have said the nurse with a halo was hot for you. I’m not sure where you're from, but in Brazil, wealth and poverty are always together, for better or worse! It might be a bit of a culture shock, depending on your roots. Now, when it comes to Rio, I’ve got a few favorite neighborhoods: Barra da Tijuca (it’s got the beach of your dreams), Santa Teresa (it’s so quaint, you’ll think you’ve stepped into a postcard), and Ipanema/Leblon (Nice beach and full of life). These places are safe in my opinion, you can walk about during the day, no problem, and there’s more to do than a cat has lives!
Now, I wouldn’t recommend strolling alone through unknown neighborhoods - it’s not an adventure you want to embark on, you can visit the favelas with a tour guide or even an Uber, It's affordable. Remember, that in Rio, it’s all about keeping a low profile, don't show off and you will be fine.
Brazil is my favourite country for holidays and Rio is my favourite city, even thought on moving to Rio in the past but I am too old for that now, remember, Brazil is massive and diverse, the south is completely different to the north region, this video will give you a good idea about Brazilian diversity:
