- What does an elementary art teacher do all day? Lots of things! Every day is different and that's why it's so great. Of course there's teaching, then there's preparing for teaching, then there's recess, then displaying artwork, and sometimes cookies!

I have homeschooled my children for 18 years and am done now! Back in the late 90s, I was halfway through getting my bachelor of fine arts degree, then got married and raised four incredible children! I am now considering going back to school to become an elementary art teacher. I was very excited but began to have huge doubts, due to all the teachers’ videos saying how bad the kids are, how hard it is to work with parents, and how stressful a job it is. I couldn’t find anyone showing that it is good and worth it. Thank you for your video! Very uplifting! Do you recommend being an elementary art teacher, after having been in the trade? I really want to become an elementary school art teacher in USA/Canada but man I have no idea where to even start. I don’t know what I would go to school for or what the path is on how to start. I have the best memories in art class as a little kid
I am in TX and the route I chose is to get a Bachelors of Fine Arts with a teaching certification. My program is primarily art classes, art education classes, and classes to prepare for state certification exams.
Your best bet would be to look online at the degrees at your local 4 year universities and then speak to an advisor to see if they can list out the steps before even applying to the college just to give you an idea. Also look for art education requirements for your state because some may vary what kind of Bachelors degree you need with the teaching certification, it really does vary. When I first started researching I searched “how to become an art teacher in Texas” and that helped a lot as a starting point.

There are specific art education degrees at many colleges. Or even any general education degrees and then take art classes to gain knowledge to be certified in teaching and art. There's quite a few alternate ways to get into it too, but my knowledge is in obtaining an art ed degree, especially if you want to get hired and paid as a certified teacher. I get paid substantially more than art teachers who don't have their full credentials. Follow some facebook groups for art teachers. Do some more research and you'll find the options are out there.

you're welcome! I feel like every art teacher's day is different depending on school and student and I'm always looking for examples, so I figured I'd make one myself to be helpful.
In my art room, I give each student a piece of burlap to work on so that the clay doesn't stick to the table. If the clay was perviously used by students, the fibers may be from the burlap they used to work the clay on. 🤷♀
I found it from my clay store that it's sheep dog fiber clay, which it very good for sculpture. Not great for slipping, scoring, and smoothing as we found out. But it stays really durable even if it's not fired, but when fired the fibers burn out and it's like regular ceramics.

A little bit of everywhere. Sometimes I find lessons online, sometimes I modify things I find, and sometimes I make it up myself. I do make up the curriculum myself though and then slot lessons in.

That is a question I might not be qualified to answer. I know the US needs more teachers and I believe some programs that bring in people from other countries, but I'm unsure of the details.
Where are you teaching at? Did you find out the fibers are okay or not
yeah! I went to my local clay store and found out it's sheepdog fiber clay. It's great for just airdrying and is very sturdy when bone dry. Fibers burn out in the kiln, but it's good just dried too. It's a little harder to work with and blend though.
At my school they don’t have art class
I didn't have art when I was in elementary. We had a pretty solid music program though. My teachers were really great about including art, especially my 5th grade teacher. Mrs. Askew... she was so creative.
The fibers look like you have paperclay; it will burn off.
yup! I asked my local clay store. Great for sculpture. Terrible for trying to score, slip, and smooth.
