We had a basement remodeled recently and they did basically this same thing. Also added returns to keep the system balanced. I was a little concerned it would be too much for the furnace and AC to handle since it was basically doubling the square footage they had to handle, but its been fine. Basement is about 5 degrees cooler than the upstairs in the winter.
@@srd2725 yeah, we have are thermostat set to 67 and the basement had been 64 degrees ever since we did this. It use to be any where from 55 to 60 degrees in the winter!

make sure you have a return back to the air handler i.e. no air in if no air out.
