How to disassemble and reassemble the Ruger Mk II 22LR pistol. This is very similar to a Mk III pistol.
I have not fired my Mark II in a couple of decades. I took it apart to inspect it, and the last trick you showed for turning the gun upside down and aligning the strut did the trick. I was not able to pull the hammer back before that. So many years later and this video still in demand!
Easiest, fastest instruction video ever! Made a dreaded job a breeze! Thanks
Dude thank you so much for this! I was having so much trouble putting it back together, watched like 3 different videos and they all said "just put the pin in and fold it over" nobody explained the hammer strut having to be in a certain position. I couldn't cock the hammer back at all until I watched your video. You're a life saver!
Thank you, excellent video. Thanks for showing the tricky part.
100%!
I have a MKII just like that. In 30 years I have never once taken it apart and don't ever plan to unless it stops working. Fantastic gun, put thousands of rounds through it.
+John .Dlugos I've had mine for 35 years now and prior to today, I had only ever taken it apart for cleaning once. I had such a difficult go of it back then, that I hadn't cleaned it again before today. Mine finally started to have cycling issues after several thousand rounds. As long as you closely follow this video, I doubt you'll have any problems when you take it apart. I was shocked that the gun functioned at all; it was so horrible inside I went through dang near half a bottle of Hoppes #9 and half a can of Gun Scrubber to get it clean.
Wow, I just spent over an hour trying to reassemble my Ruger Mark II pistol. I looked at several video's with no success. Your step by step instructions made it possible for me to complete. My problem was I failed to squeeze the trigger towards the end, until you mentioned it. This is a very difficult gun to field strip, but with your help, it was possible. Thank you very much, you are a life saver.
Same
I've owed my MKII for 20+ years. I cleaned it once and struggled to put it back together. I shot it the other day and dreaded cleaning it. Thank YOU for this video. I am no longer apprehensive about breaking it down. 🙏
You make this look sooo easy... Bought mine back in the 80's and I still have nightmares of cleaning it... I recently started shooting it again and I'm afraid to take it apart :) after watching this , well there is a small chance I might do it :)
I’ve had a slab side for probably 20 years. Takedown and reassembly isn’t really so terrible once you get used to it and it’s certainly not impossible. After you do it a dozen or so times, it’s just another gun cleaning routine. Kind of fun actually, knowing that you can do this without thinking twice while so many others are intimidated.
My grandfather left me a mk 2 after he passed. I have very fond memories of plinking around when I was a child, however I’ve never seen it cleaned. Your video is exactly what I was looking for, and will allow me to keep this memory we shared alive for decades to come.
Wow I had mine for 10 yrs before I sold it and the whole reason I did was taking apart to clean it. Had to go to a gunsmith twice for re-assembly to bad this video wasn't around in 2007. Great video and a big help to Ruger community
Yours is the best on the Ruger MK II field stripping. Especially the trick at the end. Now I am going back out to the garage and try to get mine put back together, now that I understand what to do. THANKS A LOT. You have done the MK II community a really good service.
This is THE BEST video when it comes to explaining how to reassemble the gun. Good job!
Good job; thanks so much for helping with this complicated little beast. Once you broke it down it all made sense. Many thanks.
This process can be a nightmare if you mess up the strut. I've watched a few videos on this, and this is by far the best and simplest. Thank you.
I have this pistol and a Taurus 92 stainless which also works brilliantly. I can take the 92 apart in 4 seconds without tools. One safety switch mechanism pushed and turned by finger and the barrel, spring and everything else comes apart.. Works of art...
I have a Beretta 9, which is probably the same as your Taurus. Yes, makes you appreciate modern handguns.
Great video. Helped me disassemble and clean my mother in law’s old Ruger. She passed couple years ago and my sons love shooting it because it was hers. We had been having feed issues. Good cleaning resolved it. Thank you again.
THANK YOU for this excellent video! About 25 years ago I inherited my dad's Mark 2 Target pistol, but had it has been stored away and not working properly. With help from your video I was able to (finally!) take it apart and give it a MUCH-needed cleaning and oiling, got it back together, and now everything seems to work smoothly and perfectly. I can't wait to take it to the range and shoot it... it's been far too long since I have shot it! (since my dad passed away 25 years ago.) I think he'd be very happy to see me shooting it again. Thanks so much for your very clear and easy to follow instructions. Best video I found for this gun.
MsJM Sounds like a special gun to go shooting with.
+bgallaher77 It is an awesome gun to shoot, and yes, I'm really happy to have it. I now know why my dad liked this gun so much - it is just dead-on accurate and really fun to shoot. I can consistently hit bulls-eyes and keep 1 to 2-inch groups with this gun. I only wish I was as accurate with higher caliber guns! But I'll get there eventually. Whenever I go to the range, I now always start and finish with this gun, because then I start and end with great results (even if the middle isn't yet where I want it to be!). Thanks again for the great video... just watched it again for another cleaning. Please don't ever take this video down! :)
MsJM cool thing that it doesnt kick back that much too eh?
Yeah, my too. I broke mine out of storage for my kid to shoot.
I know this has been online forever. I’ve been on a shooting hiatus but today I decided to shoot my 30 year old MarkII. Of course I’ve never gotten it back together easily until today after 5 minutes watching your video. Time very well spent. Thank you
I purchased my mark II in the 90’s - today it still looks and fires like new
Great target pistol
Excellent video
Explained how to disassemble and reassemble very well
Easy to follow your instructions
Thank you
Best most accurate gun I own, can't tell you how many rounds have been run threw it !!
Great video. I've had my mark ii for years and never field stripped it because I didn't want to take it to a gunsmith. I was able to do it on the first try after watching this. Piece of cake.
Fantastic job on the instructions, easy to see, easy to under stand, easy to hear. I like that you didn't add a lot of talk. Great job.
Watched 3 videos, yours is by far the best. No one else explains how to line up that pin in the middle slot.
just wanted to say THANKS! you are the ONLY person that mentions the need to have the hammer strut is aligned in the middle position. only until i found your video was i able to reassemble mine. AWESOME attn to detail!!!!
Thanks so much for a great video bgallaher77!!! I belong to a pistol league and shoot my MKII every January - March. Then the gun sits for 9 months. Too much time for my old mind to remember all the little tricks to reassembling it. The manual is helpful but your video makes the job so much easier. A word of caution for MKII owners. Always make sure the firing pin retaining pin is in the bolt prior to sliding the bolt into place. If the pin fall out and you don't notice, the first time you pull the trigger you will damage the pistol. Unfortunately I know this from experience. Had to take it to a gunsmith for some machining to get it operational again. Other than the headache of breaking these pistols down and reassembling them, they are a great pistol. Extremely reliable and accurate. Once again, thanks for a great video. I've used it 3 years in a row. Wish I could buy you a beer!
Have had my mark II for several years and shot it sparingly because was always told how difficult it is to reassemble after watching your video I have confidence in putting it back together
Wished I saw this year’s ago, I guarantee it’s going to get more use now lol, thanks , I was even thinking about trading for a IV ,but not
Now , may go ahead and have barrel threads added!! Pew pew
Thank you. That the first time someone mention the hammer strut need to be in the middle position. I'll been fighting to put this together for an hour.
Just got my dads mark II and had no idea how to break down. this video saved my hours of pain and suffering. I was able to reassemble in just a few minutes. Thank you sir!
I've got a Mark I and Mark III. This is by far the beat video for disassembly/assembly out there! Very well done.
Bro it took me like over an hour fighting this gun reassembly until I saw your video. Thanks! I didn't want that walk of shame to a gunsmith lol
Excellent and very helpful video. Wish I could have seen it 15 years ago when I bought my MK II .
These Mark II's are awesomely reliable. I compete in Steel Challenge matches in a variety of classes, including rimfire class. I use a (basically "stock") Mark II Slabside, while all these folks are sinking dollar after dollar in 22/45's and much more expensive pistols. When you look at the scores, me and my Mark II are in the upper echelon of competitors. I wish I could say we were a #1 team, but while the Ruger Mark II does its job, the shooter often leaves a much to be desired. Though I like the release lever on the Gen 4's, which is L O N G overdue, I think I'll stick with my old faithful Mark II. Good instructional video.
Thanks! Just did a complete cleaning of my Mark II for the first time. Wouldn't have attempted this without this detailed video.
Thank you for the east to understand instructions. The print manual is lacking. You answered a number of questions and pointed out pitfalls. I appreciate this video.
After an hour of struggling with the strut, I finally decided to look it up. THANKS!
I watched other videos on assembly ad this is the first one that was concise, to the point and exact. I put the Mark II together with ease after other instructions failed me. Bookmarking this vid now. Thank you!
Amazing how vague the manual is for reassembly. You would have thought they'd emphasize where the hammer lever needed to be positioned.
Great video. I inherited my Granddad's target model a few years ago (he passed in 1995, and my Grandma gave it to me later on) and have been needing to break it down to clean and strip it of old, gunky oil. Getting it apart and going through it was a fun learning experience and it made me feel close to my Granddad. Thank you for making this video
Excellent video my friend. I saw a guy shooting one of these at a pistol range a few weeks ago and it reminded me that I had one tucked away in my Marine Corps memorabilia from 50 years ago. I got it out today and disassembled it for its regular 50 year cleaning prior to taking it to the range this week. It has been in pieces on my kitchen table for the past 10 hours because I cannot get it back together! After watching your video tonight I will start fresh again tomorrow.
My piece is the Standard Ruger manufactured in 1964 (the Mark 1 was the target version).. As I recall, I paid $39.00 for it new in the box from a gun shop. As you discussed, my issue is with the trigger assembly now I think I know what I have to do. Thanks for your clear, concise and encouraging comments!.
Great video plain, simple and easy to follow. It helped me finally fully clean my favorite piece.
Outstanding video. Thanks for pointing out all those "issues" that can be a problem with these great guns.
Awesome vid!!! Owned mine for over 20 years and it was a pain to figure out assembly and disassembly of this great gun...even with the book. This vid will help a lot of people. Thanks again!!!
Thank you for publishing this. I am going to clean mine tonight for the first time since I bought it new in the year 1989. IT still shoots fine with no hangups. I just felt like it needs a good cleaning
I'm glad you did this. I have 2 that were my fathers. That haven't been touched in 20 years. I was scared to force things and the hard part with the final was truly the confusing. The whole lever in the handle coming out and going in was hard. Had to tap it both ways. Thank you sir.
Glad I waited for the MK4
Thanks for the video! My dad was taking his gun apart and that clip you mentioned had fallen and it was jamming. Made me look cool when I just grabbed the gun and turned it upside down and the hammer strut got free lol.
i am glad you gave that tip on the hammer strut getting stuck, because that's exactly why came looking for a video.
Thank you for the video. I have my brothers Mk II and have taken it apart and reassembled it. I found bread crumbs in the handle. Cleaned it and tomorrow, I will try it out. Steve
Here in 2024, thanks soooo much for this! Never would have figured out the hammer strut issue without this video. Literally might be the worst designed handgun ever, but love to shoot it
Thank you for detailed, good lighting up close filming. So many times guys film to far away. Most of us watch on tiny iPhone/ipad screen so up close is great!!!!!
I took apart a mark 2 about 10 years ago and found it almost impossible to put it back together. Luckily for me youtube had videos on them. I've took apart plenty of guns before but this one gave me the most trouble.
Best video I've seen yet on disassembly and assembly of the Ruger Mark II. Thanks!
Awesome video. Was really struggling with it until I kept rewatching and like you said, I had to have the hammer strut just perfectly aligned. So I used a bent out paper clip to put it exactly in the right spot and hold the gun at an angle and it actually draws all the way back to slingshot now. And now I can dissasemble and reassemble very easily.
Thank you for the great video!
Fantastic video, huge thanks! I feel a bit consoled now that I've read the other comments on this video... I'm not the only one that has had a rough go of getting this thing back together. Your video solved the issue I was having. The last step of re-assembly just wasn't working out very well. Even though my gun is circa 1981 or so, it was similar enough that following your instructions finally got it back together. I remembered that the gun was difficult to take apart for cleaning, so mine hadn't been cleaned since the early '90's. I imagine I've shot around 2k-3k rounds through it since then, and I just started to have problems with it not cycling correctly. So I bit the bullet (insert rim shot here) and finally cleaned it. Can't wait to take my son to the range tomorrow! Again.. many thanks!
After I assemble it (took days to figure it out), why won't the slide pull back all the way? What am I doing wrong? Anybody want to but an almost new stainless Mark II competition piece?
Thank you for the great video. I've bought one of these pistols from a friend who needed to sell it for $200 many, many years ago. It's also my wife's favorite pistol. It's been inside a pistol rug, hasn't been used for around 7 years and it has never been cleaned. That is, till now. Didn't have to use a mallet to remove or reattach the top. Maybe I was lucky. The entire process went very smooth. Bought a low-end pistol cleaning rod from Academy. Used some old Hopps bore cleaner I still had laying around. Sprayed Rem Oil in every nook and cranny then applied some Tetra-Gun gun grease. Life is good!!
Great video with exceptional information. Agree that Ruger's Mark series pistols are great shooters and require occasional cleaning.. You made it look easy.. Thanks
Holy cow! It worked. I took this gun out plinking and was trying to clean it but couldn’t get that hammer strut right. I thought my dad was going to kill me😂😂😂. Thankyou!
LOL! 300 rds before cleaning? I've got THOUSANDS of rounds thru my MKII Govt model without even a drop of CLP. Not a single malfunction of any kind.100% reliability and 100% enjoyment to shoot. When I finally do get around to a complete take down and cleaning, I'm sure I'll have to call a hazmat team since I'd imagine there's a pound of lead in the lands and grooves. This may be my actual favorite gun to shoot. Pure pleasure. Incredibly accurate. But it is a major PIA to take down. Thanks for the vid. I may just get it out of the safe and finally clean it. I'm pretty sure the last time it was cleaned was back in the early 90's.
Thank you, it has been quite sometime since I have brought out my MK ll's and this video was so helpful to re-jog my memory on how to disassemble and put it back together. Forgot about that tricky maneuver with getting it back in place! You saved the day and much frustration.
THEE BEST Ruger Mk 2 Disassembly video on TH-cam! I greatly appreciate it!
Great pistol. I bought mine new in 1986. Still looks and functions like it did way back then.
So much easier to see what is going on with the stainless steel model. Great use of the light source and camera. Excellent presentation, thank you.
Thank! I want to get a hand on the new Mark IV, which is supposed to make all of this mess go away... That being said, it doesn't look as good as the Mark II, and I'll never want to sell the gun that was used to make the video.
The simply design of Ruger Mark 2 is so elegant and beautiful
Best treatment and photos of the HS I've seen! Stainless steel makes it visible.
Yours is the best video. That Hammer Strut gave me fits. I have never fired this gun, but want to know how it works first and clean it. I am not brave enough to tear apart the bolt- not yet. Thanks for the video though, it saved me! Others call the Hammer Strut a "thing" a "tang" and the dark videos do not show enough detail.
I am glad your mainspring housing comes out so easy. It takes rubber padded pliers to get mine out.
I use a paper clip and needle nose pairs to grab the paper clips
I have owned 3 of these pistols plus one I have now. One was suppressed being an NFA weapon. It was effective and accurate. All of these guns are reliable but getting the assembly / disassembly is tricky at first but become easy after you do it a few times.
Got my mkII new in early 90's , was able to follow instructions in the manual , no problem breaking it down n reassemble it
Never had a problem taking mine apart or putting it back together .
The pulling the trigger while it was upside down did the trick for me!!
I bought one from a guy that was pissed off at the pistol. I bought it in pieces ( cheep) I took it home and put it back together and I still own it. He's happy and I'm happy end of story.
6:46 hold the gun so that gravity is pointed down LOL. Good video. I owned one of these about 30 years ago and I never took it apart or cleaned it but back then I didn’t know really anything about guns. Now I own several firearms and I am meticulous about keeping them clean and lubricated
Excellent video. Clear, straight forward, easy to follow. Thanks for posting.
Just looked at the mark 4 the other day at a local gun shop. What a smart re design they have come up with!!! Just push a button and boom!! It comes apart!!
Dude! That little hammer strut getting into the middle was the little trick that frustrated me! Thanks for the video!
Thank you! That was the easiest and best Ruger mark 2 disassemble and reassemble video ever. Got it the first time.
The wood grips make it look beautiful.
Great video. Here's a good cleaning tip: Once apart, stuff a paper towel up where the magazine goes in the receiver and spray WD-40 into the top of the receiver and use a toothbrush to scrub it. Soray WD-40 again to rinse and then use compressed air to blow out any chunks that remain, then pull out the paper towel that soaked up all the debris. Easy peasy.
I took my Mark II apart once years ago, but just the first part not the receiver off, hard to do, never did again. Now I see how to properly. Thanks.
thank you your video was the easiest video to understand to me on TH-cam. after watching several others i watched yours and finally got my pistol back together correctly.
Thank you for this video I recently took mine apart but after reassembling it the boat would not talk all the way back and I could not figure out why but after watching this video I finally got it back to working order thank you so much
thank you very much the first time I tried to disassemble this firearm it took me a whole day didn't know you had to turn it upside down thank God for TH-cam and you keep up the good work☆
Finally a good explanation of how to lineup that final pin in the last reassembly step. Thanks!
Great video. I'd have something to add. I just picked up a MK2 from a show and it was filthy inside. So much so that I couldn't get the takedown lever to come out even with a cloth and plyers. I found that from within the mag well you can see the back of the lever. So I slipped a small flathead through the opening making contact with the lever and then tapped the back of the screwdriver lightly freeing the assembly. After a clean and lube it works fine now.
After mine being stored for more than ten years, this was a great vid to remind me of the tips, to give me the confidence to break her down.....
the hammer struts the hardest part everything else is as smooth as butter
Great video!! I have a MK 1 and assembly and disassembly is the same. I don't shoot the gun that much...so I forget how to get the main spring back in! I watched 4 videos...and got nothing out of them. 1 time watching yours....done!! Assembled and working perfectly. Good job showing details! You saved me some frustration!
One of the best looking pistols ever made
I’ve got that Mk ll with the tapered barrel and those same grips. I bought it back in the late 90s and it’s still one of my favorite guns, even though it’s a pain in the ass to disassemble.
Lol the new one has a little button. One click and it's all neat and clean open way better than the older ones heck, even better than the glocks
Thank you for sharing this, just got a new Mark II for target and this makes cleaning it a lot easier than I have been told....thanks again!
By far the best video on this subject I’ve watched.
Thank you, thank you, thank you !! Battled my pistol all day yesterday~~ the hammer strut was killing me. Went together first time after watching this. Fluke, perhaps but I am one happy camper :)
Awesome, simple to follow video! Before the video I would get the disassembly but with the assembly I'd get stuck; unable to get the 'bolt stop pin' seated beyond the spring :-\ Eventually I had to have an armorer friend seat it. Today, I did the disassembly and assembly, step by step with the video. Success! Thank you!
After I assemble it (took days to figure it out), why won't the slide pull back all the way? What am I doing wrong? Anybody want to but an almost new stainless Mark II competition piece?
Good video. I have been frustrated putting my 22 back together. After watching your great video I took the gun apart five or six times just for the practice. Thanks.
I enjoyed your demonstration on disassembly of the gun. Great job.
I also inherited this gun from my father. I don’t believe it’s been disassembled and cleaned in many years. Your video on disassembly is one of the best I’ve seen. Thank you so much for providing those instructions. Great job!
Excellent video thank you for showing the tricky part on reassembling
Great video, it helped me a lot.
I bought this gun used with no manual, and though I was shown how to put it together I do not think I would have been able to without your video.
+thewhistler You can download the manual from Ruger. Do so, it will help you take care of your superb weapon.
awesome video. I I have never cleaned my markl ll because I couldn't figure out how to tear it down. I followed the video, never been easier.
Got a special case I'm working on, disassembly is fun. Guy spilled varnish into the gun.
Absolutely the best tutorial for this task. Thanks
