Yes, that's her husband, Ricky Ricardo. Ethel is her neighbor and best friend. The man playing Ricky Ricardo, Desi Arnaz was Lucille Ball's husband in real life.

Lucy almost drowned in real life in this scene because the Italian woman actress didn't know English and she kept Lucy down in the grapes. Lucy said she had grapes coming out of her nose and she almost suffocated for real. There was another Lucy episode in 1963 where Lucy and Viv are repairing a shower and they accidentally lock themselves in and the water is rising. Lucy had to go to the bottom of the shower to remove the drain so the water could drain out, but she almost drowned here too in real life. These were done in front of a live studio audience and the audience thought it was just part of the script. Because Lucy wasn't able to say her lines, Viv rephrased her own dialogue to help Lucy.

Will & Grace recreated both of these scenes! They even did a whole episode recreating iconic I Love Lucy scenes.

I have seen Lucille interviewed about this & she did not say that she almost drowned!🙄
She said that the Italian wouldn't let her up & over reacted but she did not say that she almost drowned in this stomping grapes skit!!!
Pretty sure that you're over embellishing to the point of untrue.🙄

The grand dame queen of sitcom comedy...period. I Love Lucy practically invented sitcoms. Only Carol Burnett comes in a close second, but cheers to Lucille Ball. This show runs everywhere across the globe to this day, in every language possible and has never had a day off the air in re-runs.

Great clean comedy. Notice funny as heck, and no bad language. That is why actors of that time. True comedians. some did swear, but you very seldom seen it.

I’m glad you’re discovering some of these old shows. As commenters have mentioned with your other recent posts, the sitcoms and variety shows of the sixties and seventies were meant for the whole family to enjoy. They couldn’t rely on cheap sexual innuendos to make people laugh. (Okay, maybe now and then they slipped in something but it was usually subtle enough that younger kids wouldn’t catch on.) The writers and actors had to have real talent, and as you’ve seen they produced some great comedy that now and then had us laughing so hard our sides hurt. When a comedy skit is remembered fifty years later and can make a new generation laugh out loud, you know it’s good.
I love watching your genuine, pure enjoyment as you watch these videos. Your laughter is contagious and makes the stroll down memory lane even more fun.

Lucy was also a great physical comedian - between the way she throws her body into it AND her hilarious facial expressions just adds to the way she delivered her lines spot on. A true American icon.

Lucille Ball, the actress and comedian once said in interview, she'd do anything to get the laugh. This shows that to a T. The man was Dezi Arnez, which played Ricky Ricardo in the also playing her husband on the TV series and wad her husband in real life until the final season of the series when they were divorced. The did however create Desilu studios where her later series were performed from and then he finally left that and his partnership in that in the early 70s. His final tv appearance was on the TV series Alice which starred Lina Lavin (sic) which also appeared on CBS. A week after that appearance he passed away.

Try watching the skit where she and Ethel were working assembly line at Candy Factory. Hysterically funny! Her shows were hysterical every week. She always got in trouble. Her husband on show was her true husband in real life. Desi Arnaz. He was from Cuba. So when he breaks into spitting Spanish real fast on show, you KNOW Lucy has done something to get into trouble. Love your reactions! Your joy and smile make us viewers so happy to watch you having fun! Thank you! ❤❤🎉🎉😊😊

Lucy said in an interview years and years later that this was her favourite episode and she really was struggling for breath because the other woman who was hired to play the part was a local villager who really didn't understand English. When the play fighting began, she took it seriously and started really getting into Lucy. Lucy also commented that the stomping of the grapes was not how it would happen in the 1950s or later, and that they stopped doing that 100 years prior because of machinery.

    • @bquietsouhear

There is another commenter here, who recapped this by saying that Lucille Ball said that she almost drowned. 🙄

Some folks just love to embellish until the truth is no longer authentic & becomes their own new lie.😢

Lucy did what she wanted to do. Soak up the local color. I hope you will be able to see all the episodes of I Love Lucy. It is hilarious and still can make you laugh even though the humor was from the late 1950's. Probably your grandparents' time. I came shortly after in the 60's, but I have watched all the episodes over and over again, and still continue to laugh. Fortunately, I Love Lucy has always been in reruns for all the generations that came after.
