It is merely common between Vietnamese and Thai football. Always offensively foes and bitter and sweet moods, similar to Brazilians versus Argentinians.

As a Thai I never understood the rivalry between Thailand and Vietnam. How did it start? I don't understand why both countries should feel the need to win over each other. Vietnam is a great country and their economic growth has been way beyond excellent. Vietnamese football developed a lot over the past decade. They have great league quality as well as the national team. I'm still confused when I see online fans from both nations say they "need to win". Like, have we ever been enemies? I personally think of all SEA as friends. In fact, I'm still disappointed that my government didn't do anything when China invaded our neighbors' sea.
Anyway, lots of love and friendship here from Thailand. Again, Vietnam has great quality and I'm proud with the boys that they could get a win. Sad that the ref didn't do a very good job. I would love a clear fair game.
Losing in fairness is better than winning from a ref's mistakes.

VAR must be implemented into the next Suzuki cup. It is a shame how much impact bad refereeing decisions can have on a match. Of course you can NOT say Thailand won because of the referee, they scored 2 goals from the Vietnamese own mistakes. But you CAN say the referee put Vietnam at a big disadvantage. Remember this is not even a single legged knockout, this is two legged knockout. The referee decisions not only made Vietnam lose by 2 goals, but now they will have to head into the second leg needing to score at least 2 goals.
Not only has the referee effected this match, he has probably effected the entire semi final and tournament as a whole. Just imagine if thailand converted the penalty given to them. It would have been 3-0. Vietnam would of headed into the second leg with an even bigger mountain to climb.
AFF, it is 2021. You must implement var if you want the tournament to continue to gain prestige.

Thailand goalkeeper saves people without the ball (no red card), Thailand goalkeeper catches the ball more than 30m outside 16m50 (no red card), Thai player kicks himself in the penalty area (no card, no penalty), Thailand players fouled Vietnamese players in the penalty area (no card, no penalty) ... but the Thai player fouled and ate in the Vietnamese penalty area (penalty awarded) =)) interesting. Perhaps the Southeast Asian football federation can't afford to hire better referees, so it can only hire the lowest level referees =)) it's a shame. I think the highlight synthesis of this channel has a problem, like at the 2:05 minute it's not natural that the captain of vietnam would do that, simply because of the previous bad plays of the thailand team (defender No. 3) There were many tricks but the referee did not give a penalty. You should watch this match again to understand why the captain of Vietnam is so angry.
And the last thing I don't understand is the guy who made this video has a mental problem or not when he ignores the bad play scenes of Thai players and intentionally tarnishes the image of Vietnam.
Regarding the goalkeeper's yellow card and Thai's hand ball.
- While on the defense, there are 2 defenders behind him. Meaning that it would be considered as "pressure play" by the defender. Only if the GK is alone would it be considered a "serious foul" and he would got a red card. That said, yellow card for a Goalkeeper is the most harsh punishment one could receive already.
- Fifa have already implement a new rule regarding hand ball since 2019-2020. Any handball cause by it's own player in the penalty box are no longer consider as handball.

It is not even bias to say that the referee was against Vietnam in this match. Everyone from every other country in asean, the commentators, and Koreans who have tv rights to this tournament on SBS saw this match as very poorly officiated. I am not taking anything away from Thailand, it is not their fault for poor refereeing and they played well. But the refereeing must be better.

The ref didnt dictate the plays well enough that why those Vietnamese defenders just kept bumping right into the bodies’ of Thai players with no ball and were without fouls given.

The referee in this tournament is interesting. Thailand goalkeeper saves people without the ball (no red card), Thailand goalkeeper catches the ball more than 30m outside 16m50 (no red card), Thai player kicks himself in the penalty area (no card, no penalty), Thailand players fouled Vietnamese players in the penalty area (no card, no penalty) ... but the Thai player fouled and ate in the Vietnamese penalty area (penalty awarded) =)) interesting. Perhaps the Southeast Asian football federation can't afford to hire better referees, so it can only hire the lowest level referees =)) it's a shame. As for the Thai players, after 4 years, they won against Vietnam with a cheat match, but they looked as happy as winning the World Cup final. Funny and so cheap!
