Xanadu is a look at the future and a loving remembrance of the way things were in the heyday of Hollywood. The musical score includes the hit songs "Magic," "I'm Alive," "All Over the World," "Suddenly," and the title song "Xanadu." Olivia Newton-John will dazzle your senses with her luminous beauty and fabulous voice. She and Gene Kelly star in this mesmerizing musical fantasy. The '40s meets the '80s in Xanadu, a very special love story and the first lavish, old-fashioned musical to utilize today's music.

It doesn't matter what people say about this movie, for me it is awesome
Critics didn't like the movie. I loved it; thought it was great. Pure fantasy!
This is the only movie in the world were we can enjoy disco music, ELO’s art rock, breakdancing, Olivia Newton John in her prime, Gene Kelly’s tap dancing and skating, pop art, body painting, neon visual effects, new wave stuff.
Actually there is no disco music in the movie (which incidentally did NOT die in the summer of 1979) but the clothing store here was Fiorucci, associated with both disco and new wave - and also they had a version of Preppy which was on trend at the time.
When one considers Gene Kelly's age when he did this movie, his dancing skills never left him at all!!!
65 años en 1980
Bro still has the bones of a 20 year old
Je made this movie work. I'm sure he had a lot of input in the choreography. Such an amazing dancer.
Gene Kelly is dressed better, dances better and is just way cooler than every other person there 😂
Gene Kelly might be the coolest guy ever.
Gene Kelly jumping around and dancing in rollerblades at 68yo! What a LEGEND!
And OMG Olivia and ELO🤩😍🤩
Don't try to figure this movie out- just enjoy the fantasy, dancing, and the music. Love this movie!
How an earth could critics hate such a sweet and innocent movie?
I agree. Beautiful movie
Honestly, Sonny's character destroys this movie. I'm sure the actor is a better person, but Sonny comes off as a total asshat - sullen, angry, entitled. I've never understood why Kira likes him or wants to be his "muse."
Well HELL!!! Movie critics don’t like ANY movies!!!
A 70's style movie made for an 80's audience....it was far too late for its times. However as dorky and daggy this movie is, it will always have a special place in my heart, seeing it as a kid and not knowing style/popular culture, etc. And being an urban explorer....the urban decay places I visit I always think of this music as it's glory days.
@@Jenzel_Ria It also had stiff competition in the box office that year: Empire Strikes Back; The Blues Brothers; Caddyshack; Airplane!; & Blue Lagoon, just to name a few.
Gene Kelly, Olivia Newton John and Jeff Lynne pure Magic
Yeah; I heard Jeff called that soundtrack "from that damn movie". But I think he was wrong. So much good classic ELO stuff.
This is what the 80's was all about. everybody outside and having fun in a way that wasn't too serious! They weren't too worried about offending anybody, like how it is today, they just wanted to dance and have fun.
I love this movie. It's pure entertainment.
RIP Gene and Olivia
I agree 100% and this movie and soundtrack are favorites of mine-been favorites since age 8 for me. Saw this in the theater in 1980.
@@tjmurray6549- It's only snobs who cannot sit back and admit they were smiling throughout the entire movie and laughing at the jokes. Me? I don't care what people think. I loved it!
It was never trying to be anything but, which is why it got slammed so hard.
Yes, I loved this movie as a 10yr old girl and still love it too. Though as I got older, I definitely appreciated Gene Kelly and his serious skills and talents much more too. I enjoyed the diverse cast of dancers too. Was always picking out favorites. I know now the whole of them were awesome as the choreography was amazing for so many especially for back then. ❤
true
Such enjoyable music from Electric Light Orchestra.
ELO is magic.
I love this stupidly silly movie so much. Each song is so quotable and sticks in your mind for decades.
used to be ages myfavorit, and geuss by now seen it a miljon times, even now finding the movie online
to put it on again hahah
But so MUCH FUN 🎉🎉🎉🎉😅
It's only stupid to to unintelligent people. 😂
Me too
This film was and always will be in my top five, ELO Olivia and Gene Kelly, it doesn’t get no better than that. In the eighties it was phenomenal, now I’m 57 and it’s still phenomenal and apart from all my ELO Collection the dvd of xanadu is all I have of The beautiful and immensely talented Olivia. May she rest in peace.
May she rest in peace and sing with the angels. Lord knows, she had the voice of an angel, now she is one.
Gene Kelly sure is a class act!
This movie is a lot more fun than it gets credit for. The only problem is everyone looks stiff dancing with Gene Kelly. Because he's.... well, Gene Kelly.
This was the first movie I’ve seen with him
@@manuelorozco7760 Try "Singin' in the Rain", it's really good-- a smart musical comedy and romance about when Hollywood changed over from silent movies to sound. Gene, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor are super. And if you dig that, go for "An American in Paris" next.
@@eduardo_corrochio I have watched them both before. As well as Me And My Gal, Summer Stock, The Pirate, Anchors Aweigh
@@eduardo_corrochio And On the Town and Take Me Out to the Ballgame
@@eduardo_corrochio And Brigadoon and Always Fair Weather
Can you imagine the actors and extras, having this once in a lifetime opportunity to work with legendary Gene Kelly?
I feel like Xanadu is maybe meant to be a dreamlike experience
It was great to see Gene Kelly after his prime in movies like "Les demoiselles de Rochefort" and "Xanadu." Imádom!
Perhaps my alltime favorite sequence from any film ever. It probably has to do with where I was in my life, but I love this scene and this song so much!
This movie is magic to me, Xanadu put together the talents of Olivia Newton-John, Gene Kelly and the Electric Light Orchestra, that combination alone makes this movie an absolute classic, i just love it.
RIP Olivia - I've just returned back to the UK after 10 years in prison. I did two and a half years solitary confinement in that time. Whilst I was in solitary, I "replayed" the video segment with the roller skaters in my mind to cheer me up. Thanks for that Olivia x
bravo 👏🏻
10 years? What did you do, sing Xanadu in public? :D
@ Danny
Thank you !

@@sma7530 hey welcome back to society fella. Try stick around this time. :)
Gene what a true legend still could move
This is one of the best songs to ever be written, just learned it on my guitar and holy hell jeff lynnes use of chords is something else
🤟
He’s not from hell, he’s from #ShardEnd. Which is mentioned in the song..
Unbelievable that this movie and music is over 40 years old and its 2023.
2022 today ..RIP 😭 Olivia Newton John.So sad😭😭lost another iconic movie star/ singer 💔I loved this movie n all the colors and the Great Actors n Actress This song n ELO omg I still listen to them !!!
The music of the eighties was so cool and nice to listen . Gene Kelly and Olivia Newton - John left a priceless legacy that is : Mesmerize the audience with their performances in the big screen ….
Jeff Lynne is a genius.
A scandal it took til 2017 for him to be inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame.
👍
And he was only 1 of the Traveling Wilburys!
Gene Kelly is a legend! 's wunderful 💞
A great song in a great movie. Olivia we will miss you. You were amazing.
I just love ELO
He's the best dancer ever. I loved Xanadu.
What a gorgeous fun movie. Brings back happy memories and lots of smiles. Fabulous soundtrack also!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🥰🥰🥰
This movie is absolutely nuts... and I LOVE it!!!
One of the greatest musicals of the 80s. It ranks right up there with Can't Stop the Music, The Apple, Grease 2 and The Pirate Movie.
Mitico film grandi E.L.O ❤
Love this movie. RIP Oilivia.
The music is spectacular in this movie.
Absolutely love this and the Xanadu roller skating video. Gene Kelly was 67 nearly 68 when he made the movie and did all the roller skating ....no trickery.
Gene Kelly was trying his best to fit in and be accepted by the younger generation of dancers... but then, Gene was a seasoned professional in the midst of the cast's admiration for his inspiration!
Gene was perfect for the juxtaposition.
WRONG - he always criticized too much editing... look it up
Sadly,this would be Gene's last movie 😢
He wasn't trying to fit in. It's a "movie". He turned it down originally until he realized Olivia was the star of the movie and then he accepted.
2024 here. And still respect to this day. Fill your souls with joy and spurn hatred.
Watching this, you realize that the world was so, so ready for a channel with nothing but music videos. That happened the following summer.
And we thank MTV for those 17 years of music videos.
@@jovalleau Exactly ;-D
Love Mr. Gene Kelly, ELI, Olivia NewtonJohn, and Andy Gibb. May all three of them RIP❤❤❤
Andy Gibb? Sure he died RIP. And granted they both look somewhat similar.
But he was not in this movie. That is Michael Beck. Best known from the movie. The Warriors.
Oh. And still very much alive and well.
Magnificent!!! W*O*W !!
Thank god for the music but it saves the movie and its because of the music that the movie is remembered.
ELO did a great job on this tune.
gene kelly is just sublime.!
☺️😊😃
🤘🏻🇦🇺🌏✌🏻
One of my favorite scenes from the movie! Xanadu was one of my high school guilty pleasures. And made me want to seek out more 80’s pop culture
I loved this movie and my dad did too... He was a hard man to please in terms of movies but Pete's Dragon and Xanadu were ones he loved... I think it was because he grew up with musicals... Me I am a rock and Roll girl and love magic... As someone with a disability you really need music and magic... Miss my mom and dad and this brings them back to me...
Gene did a good job here. He still had the moves.
Gene Kelly is a great dancer! ELO a great band. Fun stuff.
I love this movie so much it’s become a guilty pleasure for me.
Truly GREAT song!
When i watched Xanadu in the movie theater in 1980 i was 16 years old. Was it silly and campy? Yes. Did I still love it? Yes. I recently watched a music theater rendition of Xanadu and while the songs were well sung, there was no way they lived up to the task The original just slayed them. Who, after all, could ever outdo Gene Kelly and Olivia Newton-John? No one. Period. Love them and if Gene could see this today, he would be amazed by the love the music and the film still gets even today. Love it!
Yes, it's all great, but no one under 20 years old could identify with Gene Kelly or Broadway musicals. That's why it flopped. My favorite part was in the beginning when the Muses came out from the wall mural...very cool. And my roller skating team back in 1981 used to have a routine we did to "All Over the World". Now I have to walk with a cane because of injuries back then.
@@themagus5906Excellent analysis. Alot of Movies flopped that were cult classics. This Movie, & The Blues Brothers. Also alot of Rock Stars were trying to be Actors and their Movies flopped. Neil Diamond (The Jazz Singer), Paul Simon (One Trick Pony), Meatloaf & Debbie Harry (Roadie). Then Janet Jackson pays homage in her own way with Alright. Then Olivia opens her own Boutique and it flops. She was so beautiful in this Movie. Also without realizing it, she and Richard Gere showed the burgeoning impact of Coffee Houses (Pre Starbucks), and Richard Gere did in in American Gigolo and Pretty Woman. At last report Michael Beck did Audiobooks but he was brilliant in The Miniseries Celebrity where he played Thomas Jefferson Luther aka "TJ".
The man was a genius until the very end !
This was the first movie I’ve seen with him
This looks very cheese and messy nowadays, but, unfortunately, it did look cheesy even back then as well, so it was a flop. But the music is so good it deserves being watched... and Gene and Olivia deserve it too!
Wonderful music two great stars
At least it’s better than the Broadway version
It's very far from being a flop and much better than most movies being released now plus safe for kids to watch.
@@heidivert830 Three great stars:Gene Kelly, Michael Beck and Olivia Newton John.
I don't care! I loved this movie then and I love it more now! ❤️
Everybody dancing in this movie all those dances and none of them touch Gene Kelly Talent he had was astonishing
Mid 80s fashion and looks in a 1980 film.Someone had a foretelling of what was to come.
Por Dios, me fascina esta cancion, no me canso de escucharla ❤
It's impossible not to smile like crazy when watching this. ❤
I recall the flick. you know, I think its time to watch it again. just for the fun of it.
I loved everything about this movie
Visually is still stunning, is like a collision between Pop Art painting, early video games design and a lot analogue video effects heavely reconstructed nowadays. No doubts about the great soundtrack but visually is a great feast of Pop.
Fiorucci (the L A store here, I went to the one in N Y) was the coolest in the world at the time, here 70s disco fashion was morphing into 80s new wave - everything was cotton, not polyester, and the yellows, oranges, and acid greens were typical of the style of the day. Quite a different visual from Saturday Night Fever of only a few years before.
Doesn’t anybody realize that this is a 1980s version of “Down to Earth”, produced in 1947, starring Rita Hayworth, in which Rita played Terpsichore, the Greek goddess of dancing and chorus? Rita’s version has its own catchy songs and beautiful dances; well this was the 80s version of the similar movie. Check it out if you get a chance, it’s really quite beautiful.
Rita Hayworth was a Godess!
Yes we do and that was a movie version of a musical chorus stage play Heaven Can Wait.
However this movie was choppy, clumsy and really a stitched together set of 3 minute MTV style music videos in the infancy of that outlet.
The chop rotoscope and psychedelic color lines became a staple of record industry music videos and brit rock films by 1965.
She had great success in Grease, which was a proper musical with numerous career actors to hold a plot. She had also had a great ratings ABC TV concert with Andy Gibb and Abba a few years earlier.
Her producers are trying to recapture this here, with a substitute Teen Beat discount Andy Gibb.
This film suffered as a film as Sgt Pepper did a couple years earlier...for the same reasons.
Absolutely love this movie its mental ❤❤
Maravillosa...!
Gene Kelly como siempre, espectacular...!
I've heard this soundtrack throughout my life but have never actually watched the film. The cartoon sound effects are killing me haha
There is so much cheese you may become lactose intolerant. But it is also a lot of fun to watch.
I liked it better than grease
@@donnalombardo1135 Disagree but still good
I was thinking of video game sounds. Either way I wish they could cut it out. lol
It’s pure cheese and I love every second of it.
Happy time! Happy music! Happy I was part of it,,,!
Do you think they were blasting All Over the World on set and Gene was dancing to it?
I hope so because his dancing fits perfectly to the song.
Especially at 1.06- Cool looking Move.
Disco had reached its zenith, Xanadu could have sealed that fantastic era... If it would had a more efficient marketing, then Disco would had departed with a golden touch!👍👍👍👍👍👍
Olivia Newton John. Rest in peace.
Gene Kelly was still at the top of his A-game 😊😊
Brilliant album to film brilliant actors miss Olivia Newton John I loved her music
There was a time. I love it!
Gene Kelly - feet as fast as ever!
Una de las canciones icónicas de ELO 👏👏👏👌
Look it's Swan From The Warriors and He Came Out To Play-i-ayyy! 👀😁
I love this movie 🥰
Respect to ONJ and Gene Kelly. Funny how many of the outfits Gene tried on actually work nowadays
Interesting too how they were likely all cotton. By 1979-80 polyester was well on its way out and the 70s look was changing into the new wave style (along with preppy), though only fashion people seemed aware of it - trends spread slowly with communication being so basic compared to today. One notable change: flared pants were finally gone.
Que nostalgia. ❤
¡¡QUE HERMOSA PELICULA XANADU!!
RIP,Gene Kelley and Olivia Newton John.😞:-(
He was a genius ❤️
I am mesmerised watching Kelly dance
While misused and abused, Gene Kelly was the best thing about that hopelessly 80s stinker. That and this ELO song.
I liked it a lot better than Grease
@@user-lt5be9jl4qSo much better than Grease !

As an old metalhead owning the soundtrack, is this a "guilty pleasure"?
Not so many likes for this incredible and wonderful moment of the film The song is the very best of ELO Jeff Lynne so wonderful about enjoying life to the fullest for everyone on this planet. the film Xanadu I feel the same about the musical Grease they compliment each other.
My favourite movie
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
