Explosion cannot happen without small amount of explosives or BATTERY BLAST - so many blasts happened in pagers means these were having explosive material like RDX in small amount - which can be triggered by accepting ring / message etc - to get circuit completely activated and explosive to create blast -
As you suggested that these were NEW PAGERS - these had a small amount of RDX type explosive and trigger circuit
