THIS EPISODE:
James Patrick "Jim" Masterson was a lawman of the American West and a younger brother of gunfighters and lawmen Bat Masterson and Ed Masterson. He made several hundred arrests during the next two year time span, mostly of drunken cowboys who came through Dodge City on cattle drives. On September 1, 1893, as a Special Deputy U. S. Marshal, he was involved in the Battle of Ingalls, a gunfight in Ingalls, Oklahoma against the Doolin-Dalton gang, and was responsible for the capture of gang member "Arkansas Tom" Jones.

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

Bill and Grat Dalton were both killed in Coffeyville, KS in 1892. There were three Daltons involved in that shooting. Emmett Dalton got shot 24 times and was thought he would die but did not. He went to prison and then came out and became a successful real estate man, author, Hollywood consultant and actor. Dick Broadwell and Bill Powers were also killed in that shootout and they were part of the gang. Bill Doolin who was part of the gang had a bad feeling about the robbery and supposedly bailed out before. He formed his own notorious gang and another Dalton brother joined named Bob Dalton. That was the only Dalton in the Doolin gang. There were some Dalton's who were law abiding citizens in fact one wad a lawman who was killed in the line of duty. The battle of Ingalls is really one of the west's biggest gun battles and it really gets left out and overshadowed by the O.K. Corral. There were three U.S. Marshals killed in that shootout. Speed and Shadley were killed that day and Hueston died the next day as a result of his wounds. He was the Marshal that started shooting first. One of the Doolin Gang members was killed Oliver Yantis along with a town citizen.
The three guardsmem were Bill Tilghman, Chris Madsen and Heck Thomas.. Bill was famous for catching Bill Doolin in Arkansas.. Doolin had so much respect for Tilghman that he gave up peacefully. Doolin eventually escaped and that is when Heck Thomas shot Bill Doolin. All three were awesome lawmen in their time.
Many people think of Wyatt as a lawman or gambler but few realize he was also an outlaw. In March of 1871 he stole horses Indian Territory. Wyatt spent his life trying to tell his story and making sure he was justified in the shootout in the O.K. It worked out in the end as he lived the longest. His story has been told many times over the years.
thanks Rhetty
Tombstone may not be historically accurate but it is in my top 10 movies of all time. It was pure entertainment and full of eye candy! 🥰 😁
indeed it was 😊
I LOVE Tombstone! I have watched it so many times I can recite every word n every sentence 🤣 no lie & no matter how many times I've watched it I still when Morgan & Doc dies.
@@tksass9091 me too! I have the DVD and I've watched it multiple times!
@@FacesoftheForgotten I do hope you watch Wyatt Earp starring Kevin Costner! This was the most accurate depiction of Earp and Holiday made. Costner researched the history for over 2 years and was applauded for its accuracy.
@@FacesoftheForgotten yes Ron, you are 100% correct. I did a term paper in college. Back in 1993 pre-internet, all my reading materials came straight from Tombstone, AZ when I visited. I watched both movies and quickly realized that Wyatt Earp was much more historically accurate. Although the movie set of Tombstone looked more realistic.
THE OPENING IS EPIC RON , LOVE IT , SO COOL 😎 THE EARPS ,BAT MASTERSON, THE WILD WEST
The Theme of Good the Bad and the Ugly. Perfect intro.
Definitely an iconic music piece!
Wish I could whistle 😪
I want thank you for that beautiful opening music. That song was a favorite of my dad and my three brothers. They would put on their Stetsons as they were going out to the door and one of them would be whistling that theme. My mother and I would just look at each other, roll our eyes, shake our heads, and then giggle when the door shut. Thank you for bringing back a beloved memory
The Minnie on the Masterson tombstone was James and Bat’s sister Emma Anna “Minnie” Masterson, daughter of Tom and Catherine (Katherine) Masterson.
Your rocking that T Shirt Ron 🙋♀️🤗🎼🎶🙌
Most definitely! Can't beat Pink Floyd, they're one of the greatest older rock bands, for sure.😀👍
Loved the drone footage & the music at the beginning of the video!!!!!!
The good, the bad, the ugly, Yeah!!! Loved your intro! Great show Ron! BRAVO!!❤
Unusual to have three brothers from Canada(especially Quebec)become lawmen south of the border. Had a chuckle when you described how these brothers would try to talk outlaws out of situations in a low key, polite way. Very Canadian! You always find an interesting story out there. Cheers from British Columbia.
Wow ron, that cut me deep, I loved tombstone and still watch it when I can to this day, I'm a huge kurt russell fan and I thought it was just a great western, I wasn't reaching for truth , just entertainment, I loved 1985 Silverado western with Kevin cline, that's my second favorite, anyway I still love your channel, I'm not crazy about Dennis quaid, never have been
Awesome Video Ron. Thank you so much for taking us along with you and your all the great history you researched and told to us. Regards, Cathy R.
Virgil Earp, was the 1st Marshal in Colton, CA. When the town was 1st started from 1883 until 1889 when he resigned. Buried in Portland, Oregon, Wyatt is buried in San Mateo, CA. and James is buried in San Bernardino, CA. James body was shipped from Arizona to Colton, CA accompanied by Virgil.
Do you happen to know where Bat is buried?
Woodlawn Cemetery Bronx, New York.
@@dongrenier3951 thank you
That's a shame the brothers are buried in different places.
That was off the charts cool! I love those history lessons along with the graves! Great job. Thanks Ron
One of my most favorite so far. Your research on history of this era is incredible. Growing up seeing Hollywood history, it is very refreshing to find the facts. Fact outweighs fiction.
My family is from Coffeyville and I can remember going through the Defenders museum and visiting the sites in town where the gun battle took place and then going out to the cemetery to visit the grave site countless times as a kid and growing up and taking my own family there. My grandmother told us some of our family members were involved in the defense of the town and had a lot of pictures.
Wyatt Earp is my ancestor.....many in my family were in law enforcement including my dad.. Dont forget to visit Maple Grove cemetery interesting stuff there too!
GREAT STORY!!! Love Western History. My Dad was a BIG fan of it,I guess it wore off on me. My family is Lima,Ohio and all over Eastern part of Kansas.
Thanks for sharing.
Clint Eastwood & Pink Floyd !!! Brings back memories !! Still watch & listen to them both till this day !! Ron ty for always taking us w/ you & sharing history & memories.. Be & stay safe out there my friend & all !! Xo from NJ 🙏🏽🥰
My father loved this tune brought back great memories thank you. This is perfect.
You sir are insane tombstone is one of the all time best Western and its my favorite.
Great intro music “The good, the bad and the ugly”. Ya gotta love history!
wow very interesting and very well done. There is a lot of information that I never knew thank you so much
Another good one Ron!
I would like to say that the movie Tombstone was for entertainment. It was not made as a documentary. Therefore, it does not have to be historically accurate. I love the movie Tombstone. It also got some people into watching the western genre that would not have initially been interested.
Every time I watch one of these, they always turn out better and more interesting than I had anticipated. Love these videos. Great job to you, from Kenova, W.V.
Have you ever watched Mysterious WV, he does great videos about WV
@@moonshinegrrl393 No. I didn't know. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
Did you ever hear of the Reno gang? They were among the first of the train robbers. They are buried in Seymour Indiana. That was quite a story complete with them being lynched. They grew up on a nice little farm but became outlaws like so many others. I grew up in Oklahoma, hearing about the Daltons and the Doolings and Belle Starr.
Iam reading a book about Josie Marcus Earp,Wyatt's common law wife, these people really had alot of adventures thru their adult lives. I am always facinated with stories of the Old West.
Love Sadie, that’s what Wyatt called her. My one dog is called Wyatt (Golden retriever) and my other is called Sadie (One of my two black labs)
Love the music and the cemetery . Excited to hear another story . Hi Ron .
I'm so obsessed with Westerns. Thank you!! As I think I've mentioned before, Doc Holliday and I share the same hometown. Also, great drone work!!!! ♥️
Just starting to watch . Thanks Ron have an awesome day 🤘😘
Ron, again excellent work! Did you get to see Maple Grove cemetery across the street? Little girl Hattie Waller’s tombstone with her life size statue right in front of the mausoleum. My granddaughter also attends KU! Wish I could have met you while here! Please come again to Wichita! (🐮town)
I love stories of the old west Ron, great video.
The last few videos Ron have been exceptional. Your drone work is amazing😄. Love and prayers from NYC
Fascinating story. I really enjoyed this video. There was a family rumor that my mom's family were related to Billy the Kid. My mom's branch of the family's last name was Bonney. It didn't take much research to debunk that theory. Oh well, I learned a lot of history along the way.
Thanks for visiting my home town and talking about the western heroes from there.
I just love the drone overview Ron and that cowboy music just really drew u in a lot more great work as always 🎉🎉👍
Fantastic video!! The cemetery right across the street from this one is Maple Grove, it has a lot of interesting graves (including my Great-Great Grandmother's). --Also, while you are in Lawrence, you should go to the cemetery near downtown, it has both Phog Allen (Father of Basketball Coaching) and James Naismith, Inventor of Basketball. Plus the Original Handwritten Rules of Basketball are on display in Allen Fieldhouse!! ROCK CHALK!
EXCELLENT video, Ron!! What a FASCINATING story!! Life in the Wild West sure was dangerous, but interesting too!! I don't know whether I would have liked to have been alive then!!
Take care, and stay safe everyone!! XXXX
"Two brothers lying dead in Coffeeville:" (Eagles). Yes, the movie Wyatt Earp was, historically speaking, much more accurate. Tombstone, however, was much more entertaining. My last observation; "The Dark side of the moon" is one of the best albums ever. I say that not from the perspective of a Millennial, but from a gray haired old guy who remembers when the album came out. Thoroughly enjoyed the video!
Ooooh, you are sporting a Pink Floyd shirt today!
Hey I went to KU also in Lawrence, KS in the early 90's. I lived in a small town called Desoto, KS where I went to high school just 30 minutes away from Lawrence.
Love the intro...I blasted it in my headphones!!! Love Western stories. So well told!!
One of my favorite songs. I purposely did it knowing that I wouldn’t get a penny for this episode, but it’s worth it for me and you viewers. Don’t care about the money!!!
Hey Canadian and Live in Quebec.. I was so happy to hear you pronounced it right.. you'd be surprised how many people don't. Lol
Really injoyed your show Ron . Thanks for sharing. God Bless you and keep you well and safe.
Love the intro Ron! Awesome.. Also, love love love the T shirt! Looks good on you! Rest in Peace to the Masterson Family. Enjoy your visit with your son!
The shooter was so close to Ed Masterson the black powder cartridge set Ed's shirt on fire. My grandmother was Alice Jean Dalton a 3rd cousin to the Daltons. She was born in 1892 in Franklin KY and died in 1969.
I have cousins who live right outside Wichita so we were down there at least once or twice a year and visited the cowtowns too so this is really a great video for me ---- never was taken to the cemeteries - thank you.
Thank you so much for all the history, very interesting. I hope you had a lovely time with your son. 💕🇦🇺
Love that shirt, Ron. One of my top3 favorite rock bands! Great story about Tombstone as well
Chris Madsen was the name of the Third Guardsman!!
Wow great story, great music!!!!!!!
Hope you had a good time with your son
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That was a great video Ron, and have a nice time with your son.
You hit the nail right on the head about the movie tombstone. If you know the history about Wyatt and Doc Holiday then you know just how bad they screwed up the facts and for a movie that was supposed to be close to be very close to accurate??Most of it was not and your right again about Val Kilmer..no one could have ever done Holiday as accurate as he did.
Thank you so much! I love the history lessons as much as seeing the gravestones.
Love the movie "Tombstone" with Kurt Russell. What was amazing is I watch the video on his first Wife you did. A picture that popped up of either Wyatt or his Father when he was young, has the same look in the face of Kurt Russell. Hope you will visit and do a video on the original grave yard in Tombstone. Amazing! Love your show signed " I'm ALL in".
number 1, as you saw and heard, tombstone the movie was pure fictional entertainment, if thats what you like; a cartoon, then awesome! 👍
secondly, I have been to the tourist trap town of tombstone many times, the only thing worth seeing is the birdcage theatre. they didn't ruin that too because it had been closed down for many decades and remained a time capsule.
and as far as the foothill graveyard, many of those grave markers are fake, another cartoon, as a graveyard, I will not be going there to do a video ever...
thanks for watching.
Thank-you for this awesome history lesson! I never heard of these men, I learned something new, thank-you!
Have you considered going to the Dils Cemetery in Pikeville Ky? There they have some of the Hatfields and some of the McCoys buried in the same cemetery. I was watching other TH-cam videos and learned that as well. There are some Hatfields that are buried in West Virginia and some McCoys in Kentucky. But to have some from each family buried in the same cemetery and so,e close to each other is so intriguing to me. The fact that the feud went on for years, is it still going on? Maybe not as bad, but I’m not sure. I have ancestors buried in Barbourville Ky, my Great Great Grandfather is buried in Barbourville, in a mausoleum, he was the 39th Governor of Kentucky, founded Union college (education was important to him) and opened a law practice called Black, Black, and Owens. What’s really cool is I’ve been working in education for 30 years, so I guess I inherited the need to educate ( well assist in educating) kids from my Grandfather Black 😊
I,really enjoy your videos, thank you for your time and energy that you put into these so we all can enjoy them. Stay safe
Thank you Ron! Another excellent video. Well done! 🎰🎲🔫🤠
I think your followers might like Mystery Scoop..i find it mesmerizing..
I love Mystery Scoop! It's like history coming back to life.
@@allenpost3616since i was a kid..ive always wondered what those bust and portraits looked like..i love it..lol
Yes ! Me too.
Ron love your stories all them legends live on i know my dad loved old westerns. Movies may my dad r.i.p aswell and hope u had a great eveing with your son
Very good video. Hope you had a good time with your son
I love the history lesson you give everywhere you take us.
Thank you for the video , it's a great way to end a busy work day .
My father was a Bat Masterson fan. He watched his series for years.
John Ford’s version had Wyatt Earp helping during the filming. Ford stated his version if the battle at the ok corral was most accurate. He said Wyatt told him they waited for the stage coach to come into town and he used the dust from it to surprise them.
Love the drone area shot and Wild West music in the beginning of this video, it was awesome!😀 I love the drone area shots in all your video's, they are so good very professional. I'm glad you did this video on James Masterson, Bat & Wyatt Earp, it's so interesting to learn about the things that happened back in the Wild West. I grew up watching westerns and Wild West movies with my dad and I still love watching them now. I enjoyed watching this video, great job Ron. Stay safe out there.💟
Fantastic story, great piece of history never forgotten. Thank you for telling it.
I love the intro music. Very interesting history on the Masterson's. When I was a kid I like to watch Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp on TV. Those were the days when they had good TV shows.
The theme song of “A Fistful of Dollars” brings back memories. When my daughter was small she would pretend she was a cowboy. She had a holster with 2 little cap pistols. She would come up behind her grandma and start doing the theme song (although not perfect, you could tell what she was humming). Of course, she would pretend to shoot and he would pretend to be dead. She got the biggest kick out of her game...😂🤣
Good the bad and the ugly,
Great stories and a lot of memorable people from that era.
Great story sir 👏
Thank you !
Bat Masterson is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, so I’ve been told. I lived across the street from it.
Yes, you are correct, he is buried in Woodlawn cemetery. My old neighborhood as well.
Awesome visit and storytelling. You have a great memory for names.
Ron, great story and I always enjoy your videos, too. Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend, and God bless.
Love your music,,, I grew up loving Clint and all the old cowboy movies,,,,yeeeeehaw!
LOVE the movie Tombstone..I must have watched it at least a dozen times and never get tired of it! It is the only western I like. On the other had my husband loves all westerns, especially Clint Eastwood (my son is named Clint after him) and almost all John Wayne movies.
Interest to hear something new to learn. I love the wild west. Great show Sir.❤🇺🇸
Tombstone is not a biopic, The film is loosely based on events in Tombstone, Arizona, including the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and the Earp Vendetta Ride, during the 1880s. It depicts a number of Western outlaws and lawmen, such as Wyatt Earp, William Brocius, Johnny Ringo, and Doc Holliday.
Even though the Tombstone movie is very good and even funny at times, the Wyatt Earp movie was my favorite of the two. I believe Kevin Costner tried to stay as close to the actual events as he could (with a little Hollywood license thrown in, lol). Also, I thought Dennis Quaid knocked it out of the park with his Doc Holliday portrayal. It certainly helped that he even lost 30 lbs. to make Doc Holliday more believable. I was surprised at that time that the movie didn't do better at the box office but Tombstone probably did better 'cause they were leaning more toward entertainment and not so much on accuracy like Costner did. Anyway, outstanding video! Like Quaid, you're knockin' it out of the park too! Keep up the good work!
Yep you are spot on Karen. That is my exact take on at all. I thought Dennis Quaid did a pretty damn good job!!
Love that into, Ron! Great story.
I always look forward to watching your video's!! Awesome!
What a awesome intro....you out did yourself there Ron....bravo 👏👏👏. I always loved watching my westerns as a kid but unfortunately was never much on history 😓. Do you know where Bat is buried?. Thanks for dredging thru the weather for us....stay safe and hydrated 💗🕊️
Wow that was really interesting on to the next! Wish it was that warm here in Ireland 🇮🇪 😁
Thank you for taking the time to add the photos.
There is a song by the Eagles called Doolin Dalton I used to sing, now I understand the story.
Good to see you on my side of the woods! I live 30 mins away from Wichita! 😁😁
Love the intro; the music and the beautiful drone shots. Awesome!! Thankyou for the inter string history lesson. Enjoy the tour. Stay cool. Take care, stay safe, God bless you.
Greetings from the West of Ireland 💞
That theme is from The Good The Bad And The Ugly a great spaghetti 🍝 western. 😎
Loved the scenery. We have a beautiful world. 🌍
Love me some Pink Floyd!!! As much as it can be a drag getting old, I can still reminisce about seeing the best bands ever live, in their heyday. Floyd, Zeppelin, Petty, Prine, the Dead, and so many more.
I got some more of those comin…
Love the shirt. I actually got to see the real PINK FLOYD many years ago. Love your channel and all the info you give.
Yes, Tombstone movie was purely for entertainment….Val was a great Doc. And Doc Holiday did indeed die in Glenwood Springs Colorado.
This was one of my favorites you've done! I love the old Western days and the history! I agree with you on the movie. It was a great movie but not a lot of facts there.
You and my 11-yr old granddaughter are rocking the Pink Floyd tee!
Thank you for a wonderful history lesson!
Dang! Super good video. Thanks.
Definitely my favourite tour.
Ron, Sam Elliott is one of my favorite actors. I loved him in Tombstone. Tombstone is one of my favorite movies ❤
right on.
Oh good...Another Pink Floyd fan. Loved the into music and drone.
Love the music choice for this. Appropriate. Lol and your T-Shirt!
Never tire of the visits to these old west lawbreakers and lawmen.
Great story telling thanks you 🙏🏼🙏🏼
love the intro right into the story
