He don't need no sleeping mat!
The hammock is a very versatile item.
With a tarp, you can use the hammock (preferably with mosquito mesh) the same way as a tent. You can use various tarp configurations, secure the hammock on the end with tent pegs, and use cord to to lift the mesh using the tarp line.
Throw some leaves or a trash bag full of leaves as bed and enjoy!

Yup, I have a very lightweight tent, also a bivvy. Used the bivvy on a 1000km audax recently... was perfect... I like my sleeping mat as well... Klymit Static V. Very comfy, packs down small. I use a sleeping bag liner as well giving some bug protection.
I swear by my hooped bivi on my bike packing trips. As a ground dweller i feel it ticks all the right boxes. Great advice kid 👍
Great video. I like to carry a bag, mattress and hammock with a tarp. This gives options to use a mat inside the hammock, though no replacement for a hammock under blanket. I just like a hammock under a tarp, it’s the best way to wake up as you often have a nice view of the rising sun, and it’s super cosy in the rain and wind. Worse case I’ll sleep on the ground, but I’m not a fan of bivvies!
Try the Snugpak cocoon if you want to hammock camp comfortably. Because it doesn’t compress between you and the hammock, you won’t get cold. That and a 2 season bag will see you through winter. My summer setup is a cheap rip stop hammock, 2x karabiners, 2x 10m haulage webbing, the cocoon and a cotton liner.

I sleep cold so definitely need a mat. I have a hooped bivvy but I'm too scared to use it 😆 - I always get it out before a trip but then wuss out and opt for a 1 person tent ⛺. Wish I was like you and could go mat-less but I am most definitely a fair-weather camper 😆
Seriously, I don’t know how you do it without a sleeping mat/pad!.. I’d be so uncomfy (and probably hyperthermic) without my Thermarest Neoair Xtherm, with an ‘R’ value of 6.9…
I have the Alpkit Solist XL as well, although I’m now selling it as I’ve just brought a new micro (more stealthy) shelter in the form of a Wild Country Coshee Micro V2 tent, which is somewhere in between a hooped bivvy and a tent, not sure how exactly I’ll feel about not being able to sit up in it, but will see how I get on! It’s as close as I’m prepared to get to a bivvy bag, as feel claustrophobic just looking at those hooped bivvys lol. And I’m certainly not up for having bugs crawling over my face while I sleep, with the likes of the Hunker Bivvy either. 😬
Which I also have, just to use it as an extra layer of warmth over the winter and to keep my down sleeping bag dry, in my various other 1 & 2-man tents that I have..
Great informative video …Just picked up a light one man vango f10 , sleeping bag, mat .. nearly there with kit, now I just need to bite the bullet and do my first wild camp (bike packing / fast packing)… being slightly chicken about where to camp! The NDW isn’t far so it kind of on my list

I'm so glad I bought the Alpkit soloist and to be honest, I don't see me using a Bivy in anything I might do but it's great to hear comparisons
Hi Alison - I've just done my first camp out with my soloist. One question - what do you use to hammer the pegs in?
@@DavidMackenzie I was lucky enough to be on soft ground so the pegs went in ok. A wondered if a rock might be useful but it could also damage the pegs.

I’d like to think most folk won’t mind.
Camping on a budget, Lanshan 1 pro with carbon pole is significantly lighter than the soloist and easier to get into.
does anyone do a tent like the lanshan but will make use of a bike instead of a walking pole for bikepackers like this guy?

How could your sleep not improve just from conductive heat lost mitigation with the use of any sleeping pad? I am ferling compelled to donate a pad to you.
That's kind but i wouldn't use it, i sleep fine without one and im not cold
