In Diane Keaton's book, "Then Again," the actress revealed how she'd first met Al Pacino at 'O Neals' bar near the Lincoln Center. The meeting was to allow the two stars to get to know each other better before auditioning for
"The Godfather."
Keaton was nervous, and the first thing she noticed about Pacino was his nose. She also picked up that he was nervous too, and she didn't recall discussing the script.
They were both in other relationships at the time.
Keaton somehow managed to get closer to Pacino by offering to teach him how to drive.
Keaton revealed she had a crush on Al Pacino when they worked together on "The Godfather" in 1971 and became mad for him once they became a couple.
Keaton said: "I was really very taken with Al from the very beginning."
She described him as a charming, hilarious, nonstop talker and added: "There was an aspect of him that was like a lost orphan, like this kind of crazy idiot savant. And Oh gorgeous".
They had an on-again off again relationship.
For a long time, Keaton dated Warren Beatty as well as Woody Allen.
But in the late 1980s, she was back with Al Pacino.
Pacino and Keaton ended their romantic relationship sometime after The Godfather Part III. When he wouldn't commit to marriage, Keaton recalled, she gave him an ultimatum, and their relationship was over.
Neither Keaton nor Pacino married later in life.
In the summer of 2017, on the occasion of Diane's awarding with the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award, the important prize that the American Film Institute (AFI) delivers to a cinema personality, Al Pacino uttered a wonderful and very powerful "I'll love you forever».
