I recently took your Domestika class and it demystified some huge stumbling blocks I’ve struggled with for years. The cognitive leaps I have had since taking your course are incredibly encouraging and energizing. It’s a pleasure to see more of your instruction available.
This class gives us a sense of drawing as very interpretative rather than imitative. Your awareness of perspective on the portrait is also very insightful. To crown it all, you articulate your thoughts and processes with mindful precision. Thanks a lot sir .👏👏
Thank you for your exquisitely chosen words of praise; it means a great deal to me. I'll be posting a new video on TH-cam in the coming days, which I hope you'll find as helpful. My very best to you, Dan
I love your explanation. Thank you for sharing your skill. Through the years of learning to draw (using various literature and vids), I reached a point of "kind of" using the technique you are explaining but by no means feeling as confident, hence why I am still seeking ways to be better. I think I need to have a mentor to critique my work and point out where I can do better. My goal is to paint but I desire to be able to observe better and be able to add a unique appeal to my subjects (if that makes sense). Thank you again
My pleasure. I am available for mentorship meetings via Patreon (patreon.com/DanThompsonArt) which has worked well for my U.S. as well as international students, as well as emerging artists I advise. Patreon has quietly become the place for inexpensive, quality learning (from instructors far & wide). I have been teaching MFA-level Anatomical Drawing, Figure Painting and History of Drawing Techniques for nearly a quarter century; the online infrastructure of Patreon is enabling me to share concepts and disciplines that don't obliterate an artist's financial future, due to the cost of the education itself. Cheers.
I went from Florida to NY C to take the “Facial Expresión” workshop in 2019. I’m looking forward to dedicate more time to study anatomy with Dan. I would never imagine to have such a dedicated, passionate about genius drawing mastery instructor. Thank you for this class Dan!
Thank you, Ana! Prior to 2020 I worked with the unforgettable life model Christophe - who helped make my Facial Expression workshop a hugely entertaining experience. The online version of that workshop is available through danthompsonart.com/workshops
I have taken your Domestika course like 4 times, it is so great. I am trying to understand and complement with this as well. I hope you can create more content in Domestika.
Thanks, Ricardo! I'm posting new content for all Patreons at the (minimal) Tutorial Level, as an online curriculum of study. I hope you can join me there.
Any kind of enlivening metaphor is welcome! I myself reserve the word 'scaffolding' for more constructive-related (often anatomical) principles, which arise later. I prefer 'armature' because of the wire-under-the-clay feel of the formative lines in a drawing. Cheers
@@danthompsonfineartI see. I’m following along with your demos and I working from my own subjects and I think where I believe to lose the result I intend for is in the early stages. I get “too human too soon” and I’m learning to discipline myself to hold off on a likeness right away so I’m thinking of metaphors to help me understand the stages/principles better. Thanks Dan. Love all your work and teaching.
@@darkmikerises I really appreciate it! Metaphors are so rich and motivating - keep them in the forefront of your creative thinking! If you ever want to sample more vids, all o' my Patreon content is accessible there at the minimal membership lvl. Take care
My online students always request a reference pic, so that they can draw along with me while I demonstrate...Makes our overall dialog more visually provocative.
@@danthompsonfineart I think he means why does the angle of the reference photo keeps changing back and forth to an angle that doesn`t correspond to the one you are drawing . I think that is a bit confusing at least to me.
I appreciate your visit - and question. I'm using a paper that isn't too exotic for my students to acquire: Strathmore 400 (brown cover) medium textured, 18x24" paper. I've posted content about an array of contemporary artist materials that I recommend on my Patreon, fyi, in case you want to delve more into the details. Regardless, best of luck with your drawing!

I love your use of vocabulary, like it makes everything you say as you explain and teach more way more memorable. Thank you for making this video!
Thank you very much for that. It means a great deal to me.

@ !4:00 It looks like Dali. Good work on guidance thanks Dan
Thanks very much, Jason!
Would you call the early stages of the drawing kind of a “scaffolding”?

What's the purpose of mirroring the reference photo horizontally throughout the video?
