Student teaching is so so so hard and I’m so overwhelmed. I feel like all my lessons suck even though I stay up all night every night planning. Sometimes I feel like the kids hate me and like I’m not doing enough, even though I’m doing all I can. I feel totally overwhelmed and like I can’t keep up, let alone infuse enough creativity and joy into these lessons to benefit to my kids days. I love my kids and my school but I feel totally overwhelmed. I’m only 21 and about to graduate and I teach High School Spanish.

I am sending you good thoughts. Try your best to focus on what went well during the day and not so much on what was terrible. Remember that there is perfection within imperfection. Take care.

Hang in there. It's going to be tough initially, don't be too hard on yourself, you don't have to make every single lesson amazing and creative and fun, that will suck out all of your energy. Focus on getting the concepts across in a clear and concise way and gage what your learners' weaknesses are and then focus on improving those. Just breathe and enjoy yourself, and learn as much as you can from the teachers, it'll help you when you start working. Good luck!

Just assuming from what you wrote: You are most likely doing enough, even more than enough. As long as you show up for your students, you will get past this.
There are some classes who need time to warm up to you. That‘s normal and yet it sucks. I‘ve been there, several times. Having students scream at me that I‘m their favourite teacher made me gain some confidence, but reluctant classes still throw me off.
Also, as a teacher, YOU CANNOT DO IT ALL. That‘s the hardest truth about teaching. Focus on one thing at a time. As long as a class isn’t openly sabotaging your lessons, you can concentrate on improving your lesson plans or keeping your mental health up or optimising your workflow or whatever seems most important to you. Once you have some free mental and emotional resources, try building a closer relationship with the students who seem already fairly warm with you. Build some interactional skills and test how much of your private self you want to show through your teacher self (note: that will also equal how much of their private selves students show, so if you aren‘t ready to know about your student‘s hardships, just be a bit more distant yourself). And then, one Monday, you will go back to school and there will be another vibe with the whole class. Magic.
It‘s a different story if a class is openly sabotaging your lessons. In that case, you should get help from a senior teacher.

Come prepared. Be proactive. If your CT didn't give you a lesson to plan for, bring ideas. Bring worksheets, resources, a short story you thought was cool. Have stuff ready BEFORE your teacher asks for it

    1. "How can I make your life easier?"
    2. Be visible, be available, be real
    3. Try stuff - what's the worst that'll happen?
    4. Your students aren't a throwaway experience (not merely means to an end; they are ends in themselves)
    5. Observe All the classes
    6. Take care of yourself
    7. Dress like a pro
    8. Block your social media accounts (keep a kosher teacher-friendly account if desired)
    9. Be early and stay late
    - ask thoughtful questions; be open to feedback... a former student teacher recommended emailing your cooperating teacher beforehand with a friendly introduction and a debrief/self-assessment of what you think your strengths/skills are, your challenges/weak points, what you'd like to focus on AFA teaching skills, specific questions for CT, etc. (sounds like a lot but should be 2-3 paragraphs max - be concise!) They said this helped them build rapport and provided a focus for their work together. They continued this practice weekly or bi-weekly as needed. + communication skills = key ;)

One thing that I would say is to respect your cooperating teacher (CT) even if you disagree. My CT had some controlling tendencies which often derailed my class momentum, but ultimately I earned her respect in the end. It is the CT's room after all, and they call the shots. Stay humble and ALWAYS seek to understand than be understood. Your CT likely is doing something correctly if they are allowed to have you as a student teacher, even if you don't necessarily run on the same wavelength as them. (Also I student taught LAST semester, but this guide is still helpful to keep in mind as I seek to start teaching soon!!!)

I 100% agree!! I graduated last May and my student teaching experience was a year long. My CT was VERY tough on me and definitely used the sink or swim method and thankfully I was able work though it. Although there was times when I disagreed with her mentoring methods I bit my tongue and maintained professional at all times. It is so important to remember that you are practicing becoming a teacher but also an adult in a profession.

I student-taught last year and now am working a leave replacement position. I love all these tips and they’ve all worked for me! As someone who is only 22 and interested in fashion, I sometimes dress a little “younger” and, though a lot of Teacher Tips discourage this, I have found that it really works for me. My students love when I wear “cool” or “trendy” clothes. It helps them relate to me and feel less intimidated by me. I think it’s meaningful to show your students that you can be smart/focused/accomplished/whatever and also not so buttoned-up. Just a thought!!

I just started this semester student teaching! I teach 3 90 minute blocks of levels 1 & 2 (mostly 10th and 11th grade) every day allll day. My program requires me to become (basically) their full time teacher for 10 weeks straight. It was really intimidating and stressful at first but i’ve seen that 1: prepping way ahead of time and getting as far ahead as possible is a life saver 2: kids literally notice everything (bad and good!) and 3: you HAVE to show students you care, be open with them and give them opportunities to trust you before they will actually trust you and be on your side. The first week and a half were super hard but it does get easier (and just yesterday a student surprised me with a chickfila chicken biscuit just to be nice) Thanks for the tips! If you’re about to do your ST it’s hard but you’ll do great!

Seeing all the classes is so valuable. I’m going through my alternate route right now to get my permanent license and one of the things I’ve really valued (which I’ve done of my own volition) is observing other classes. I got to see master teachers, new teachers, teachers outside my discipline, teachers who hate their job, teachers who love their job and I took away bits and pieces that I could incorporate into my own style as I went through it all. Sometimes I would find things that I absolutely hated, for example one of our newer English teachers seems to have decent classroom management, but her students hate her. She isn't harsh or confrontational, but she just doesn’t let the kids express themselves at all - even the good kids who I had previously who are quite smart and capable and well behaved hate her class. She definitely has a vibe that made even me falter. On the other hand, I saw a master teacher doing what she did best and making it look effortless in the process. It wasn’t even a rigorous lesson, but I felt like I was back in school and wanted to raise my hand to participate!
I learned a lot and am still learning a lot about how to be a good teacher. I see myself observing classes well into my career to learn as much as I can.

In student teaching right now! TIP: Ask the instructional coach (if you have one) to watch you teach (even the principal/assistant principal) and give you feedback. Not only is it nice to get another critical eye to help you grow, but those relationships may get you reference letters or even a job offer later. They know you're going to suck as a beginning teacher already, but showing a willingness to grow and accept criticism goes far. Especially when they see you taking their advice!

I'm a third year teacher and this video really helped me! I think another thing to add is try not to put yourself in a situation where you don't have a back up plan. My tip is: Have a WHY. Know why you're teaching, why you feel education is important. Have an internal philosophy to guide your approach to teaching, to motivate you & to keep you on track when times get tough.

I was kicked out of the program (aka "removed from the program) in March 2023 when I was in my second semester of student teaching. From the Coordinator and Mentor's perspective, teaching is not for me. I didn't show a "professional teaching style," and students lose engaged in the lesson because of my accent :(. From my perspective, I didn't get sufficient support from my Mentor. She was very, very busy with a lot of meetings. We need more time to talk about feedback after every lesson. Coordinator and Mentor agreed that after 2 months of being a full-time student teacher (teaching all 4 classes daily). My Coordinator (not the Coach) asked to observe my classes. That night, she informed me of the removal over Zoom. My point is, would it be different if I got a more supportive Mentor who could give me feedback at the beginning?
I went through stages of grief because of the removal for a month!
Thank you very much for your very helpful video ❤

Don’t take it personally! If students act out or sulk through the whole class, don’t take it personally! It is not about you. I spent so much time during my early teaching years being UPSET because my kids weren’t behaving or performing the way I wanted them to. This sounds harsh, but get over yourself so that you can dig into what you need to do to reach as many kids as you can and not let the few that YOU are not meant to reach kill your enthusiasm.

I’m also older, just turned 30. From my experience being in classes the students don’t really care. They were never rude or anything about my age, they always listened when I had any input, and they paid attention when I was teaching a lesson. I’m sure there are those students who would be rude, but after having observed/taught for 4 different schools and grade levels, most of them seem to be pretty good.

I'm going to be student teaching next semester and I can't deflect on the fact that I'm regretting my choice in teaching (in fine arts)... Lately, I've been really apathetic about things and I've never wanted to talk to people other than a small few. I was the person that just went to class stayed out of trouble and was never very passionate about anything so "being the real me" is boring and impassionate I highly doubt anyone would want to listen to me. It scares me knowing that I am going to be an influence of younger people and the fact that I am short and I look younger than most middle schoolers. I feel like a fraud in this degree but I'm so close to graduating it's horrifying.

How do you make sure you are not just disturbing the kids in their work because you get bored when they are working without you?
I am asking because I have been wondering myself the last year.
When I do my job well and nobody needs my help I tend to walk around and start talking to students - not always about their work and I am now the reason they are not working.
If I go sit behind my computer and work I feel like I am disconnecting and making myself less available for help.
But it’s counterproductive if I am the one keeping my students from doing their work. I had a class last year that had the best work ethic and they called me out on it - nobody’s done that before.
I see you sprinkling glitter and disturbing the students while they are taking a test and thinking: Is he making it more magical for them or just keeping himself from being bored to death? (Cause I might have done the same thing)

In my particular case I work at a private school with kids that are pretty well off, they are just really hard to motivate ( they in 7th and 8th grade which is like 8th and 9th in the US). There is also the issue of negative attitudes towards doing any work and I try to make it fun and dynamos but there are a lot of attitudes and situations that don't help to the proper development of the class. What would you recommend?
