IMO, Chris was one of the best vocalists in rock music ever.

Without a doubt. Him and Delores O'Riordan were probably the two most powerful singers of their era.

I'd go so far to say that each one of the "Big Four" grunge bands featured a once-in-a-generation type of voice: Cornell, Cobain, Vedder and Staley. What are the odds?

@@BalbazaktheGreat I agree. All powerful in different ways. Layne and Chris had insane power and soul. Eddie has tons of soul and had an intensity that few could match back then. Kurt was just pure emotion and melodic sense. He could try to play and sing bad and it was somehow still good

Chris Cornell - what an incredible voice. Black Hole Sun is maybe their most iconic song, but not I think their best - check out "Fell on Black Days" and "Burden in My Hand" among others. Also, consider checking out Audioslave, Cornell's project with the guys from RATM - tracks like "Like a Stone" really show off Cornell's astounding vocal capability. While you're at it, you might also want to check out grunge supergroup Temple of the Dog to hear Cornell & Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder working together.

Chris also suffered himself from clinical depression (at least, likely more mental conditions) and so that certainly colored his lyrics and performance. IMHO the greatest voice of the Grunge movement and one of the GOAT rock voices period.

Syed…..watch Rick Beato’s segment on the grunge movement out of Seattle.. I was born and raised in Seattle…..spent first 43 years there except for college. It doesn’t surprise me at all that this particular sound came out if that city. I adore what Seattle was……but no getting around that it’s a cloudy, damp place for months on end……and then you have a bright sunny day where the beauty of its natural setting can make you gasp.

After dark side and wish you were here. A 1977 release. The last one before the wall. Three epic songs and two really short ones. Interesting lyrics and absolutely a concept album. Angry and beautiful at the same time. Hope you choose to do the whole thing like with dark side of the moon. I think it will blow you away.

"Outshined" would be an introductory banger to react to. Chris's voice is also soaring upfront in the mix, like in many of their songs, in contrast to Black Hole Sun, where the screaming sections are very lowkey, as if it were specifically mixed for mainstream consumption.

The visual distortion of the faces is perhaps a reference to the effects of a gravitational field with an extreme gradient (you get stretched) as when close to a black hole. The 80s were so bubble gum happy and poppy, that when grunge or (alternative) started creeping in from Seattle in 1989, it was a breath of rainy air. It was as if the 70s came back again. Guitars meant something again, instead of synths.

    • @mikefetterman6782

It was our final recovery from Disco that started that new wave energy that swept the 80s. This was our anti Bee Gees, Anti techno, Anti pop music bubble that lasted from 1990-1995. The boy bands crept in and ruined music as we know it and then Cher came back with strong auto tune and the music industry about died.

You're right about the depression that laced everything GenX artists created. We were very depressed about the state of the world, the politics and what we had been taught and had modeled for us by our parents. We loved all the bleak music and identified heavily with the alienation and the desire for something different. I still love Soundgarden and believe Chris Cornell was probably the greatest singer of our generation.

the distinct "clean" guitar sound is achieved through a modulation effect pedal, and although I do not know which pedal was used, it sounds to me as if it was an electro-harmonix small clone or polychorus, which was also one of kurt cobain's favorites.

Certainly something forlorn pervaded the sound of Seattle at the time, but perhaps the most notable qualities of the music was its originality and passion, along with spectacular musicianship...wait a minute...a musical ship sailed from the port one day and returned with bands of musicians never seen before. Presented before the public like gods they ruled the charts for many years.

As with a number of other Seattle bands that broke through, the essential DNA of Soundgarden is rooted in classic rock. By contrast, Nirvana was definitely a punk band.
    Some Unsolicited Fun Facts™️:
    Cornell was called "the voice."
A number of Seattle musicians (from Soundgarden to Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam) credit a little-known trio named King's X with the birth of grunge, due to their innovative use of blisteringly heavy drop D tuning (This song is in drop D.) and elaborate harmonies. King's X is worth your time and attention.

I love Soundgarden but I genuinely dislike that they kinda get pitted into that "grunge" genre when they were really so much more than that. Their early work (albums like Ultramega OK & Louder Than Love) is much more hard rock/punk sounding than anything else. Badmotorfinger is almost more of a heavy metal album than grunge.
I honestly wouldn't even say Alice in Chains or Pearl Jam are strictly grunge bands. They both have had grunge songs of course but overall I think they're much more than that. The only band of the "big 4" of grunge I'd classify as grunge is...welll....Nirvana. I think all of them blowing up at the same time and coming from Seattle is what pitted them into that genre.

@@smolove4005 their major label debut was 2 years before Nirvana. Woulda been 3 but they wanted to say that they'd been on SST, Black Flag's label. So they put out Ultramega OK on SST in '88 then immediately went to work on Louder Than Love for A&M

Nirvana?? Nope. You need to listen to lots more grunge. Nirvanas only saving grace was David Grohl. Soundgarden - Jesus Christ Pose is incredible.

Soundgarden was a phenomenal band, and Chris Cornell is one of the best singers ever. Another rabbit hole to investigate.
