  • Sup guys. Shoutout to ISAAC JMusic for the comment on the previous video about sight reading recommendations. This video is partly a response to that and my usual meander around the topic. Includes tips on the reality of where to start, book recommendations, places to look and steps to take to move towards that kind of work. Any comments or questions stick em down below

Hi Dan, loved the bit of psychology on No Doubt! Have you got any more tips like this, specially for advanced sight-reading or quick study? I'm auditioning for cruise ship band pianist, and can already read music, so anything non guitar specific that would help me stay cool in the face of tricky stuff would be super welcome.

Thanks Bethany. The whole ‘removing doubt’ thing is quite a universal trope to hold onto I think.
If you think about what the point of being able to read music is… is being able to turn what’s on the page into music as quickly as possibly. One other thing to consider is being well listened in various styles so that when you are reading it doesn’t sound like music that’s being read. If that makes sense? A lot of the time there is room for a little bit of interpretation within stylistic considerations I would say. So listening to a lot of styles and understanding what they are going for when confronted with the page would be a good shout.

I’m trying to learn how to sight read music for guitar so I can try and get on a cruise ship. I’m not expecting an overnight success, I’m going to give myself about a year and a half of dedicated study

@@TheJoesteele it’s going pretty well to be honest, my knowledge of the fretboard has grown EXPONENTIALLY! I practice about an hour or so everyday on reading music and playing songs I’ve never played or even heard. Still got some practice to go before I give it a shot
