Here’s a simplified breakdown of where the build costs went:
•500w solar system (panels, battery, DCDC charger, monitor, invertor ect) $1,650
•Water and gas system (tanks, pumps, gas box ect) $2,030
•Custom DIY kitchen unit including stove/oven and 65L fridge $2,300
•Ventilation (all windows and fans) $1,300
•Plywood (16 sheets!!) $600
•Timber $1,400
•DIY aluminium roof top deck and ladder $720
•Consumables (glues, paints, sandpaper, paint brushes ect) $1,000
•Legal conversion (the costs involved to convert it to a legal camper van, including gas fitter, compliance certificate, fire extinguisher, smoke alarm ect) $1,900
The only thing we outsourced due to legal requirements was our gas pipe fitting which evidently cost $900! (Maybe we should have become plumbers 😂)
Everything else we built ourselves from scratch and in doing so saved a bomb! We’re talking several thousands of dollars building our own kitchen and aluminium rooftop deck!
We also saved a lot of money in places like stripping large cheap 2’x4’ timbers into small and expensive 2’x1’ strips which formed the base of our framing.

Only thing is you could put $30k down on a nice house and have a reasonable monthly payment. That van life will get old within a couple of years. $10k van while saving every penny for a home? Sure.
Ive done all this for $5k on a $13k e-250 2009. Dont bite on those luxury vans guys. Do it yourself

From what I’ve seen it’s definitely doable, it’s just really hard to save that amount of money on such a big project.

Some are selling these vans with conversion at over $120,000 + they’re pre-owned vans and don’t look anywhere as nice as yours.

Some conversion companies in Canada are selling JUST the conversion for $135,000….. you bring them your *new* sprinter van as they only convert new Mercedes’ vans. Which are likely $60,000+.

2020 Transits are 50k plus in the States
Mate! If that was mine and all the proof of the build at hand as you have done, I wouldn’t be selling it for under double the cost. I’d start with $100k. Best van ever. Regards, Mario.

43k AUD including a 26k van. You would pay over 100k for a factory one minimum

How do the solar panels work? Like if I wanted an Xbox and a TV, could I power them?
Yes but you need to tailor your w every equipments into solar size, invertor side and battery capacity. These three are needed in a specific combination to fit your needs

I like how much you saved on the roof rack. I was quoted nearly $2000 for the ones I'm looking at.

The walls are tongue and groove 12mm pine panelling

At least in Oz the transit won't rust as quick as they do in the UK.
Why does everything that quicker in the UK? We also have so much salt and moisture
Well firstly it rains a LOT here and no matter where we go we'll never get any further than about 100km from a salt water environment (coast) whereas in Oz rain is comparatively infrequent and you could potentially be 1200km from the nearest coastal environment.
Forgot to mention the cost of a hotel room for the night!

Thats an absolute bargain. My stepdad bought a class b promaster campervan 2 years ago and that thing set them back 165K usd.

Seems weird to spend this on something that eventually will be done and non functional but I guess the memories along the way are worth it.
Why would dit be non functional? If you look after it, the van and fit out can live for 30 years.
