Still waiting for a diagnosis at 54. Already had an ADHD test but controlled meds just anxiety through the roof so back to square one. Genetic, my late Mum thought so but was also an extremely difficult birth she admitted aka pressure on the brain. Maybe one day will puzzle it out, not a nice existence though in cloud 9

"not a nice existence though cloud 9"?
      What do you mean?
I got a diagnosis 3 months ago, at age 74.

I despise this idea that Autism deprives us of what most makes a human being human. I see people without Autism as severely lacking in qualities that I vale, but I don;t say they are less human. I find that extremely offensive. I love my Autism. It;s the environment and society I have a hard time with. ADHD is much harder. It's got it's qualities too, but it is disruptive.
These so called commodities are not Autism. They can accompany it. My theory is that its the age we live in with processed foods, pollution, sound pollution and so forth. Don;t blame the victims. Again Autism is not a comorbidity. Every one of which can exist without the individual being Autistic. That, is extremely important. I suspect, some people feel threatened by Autistic intelligence.

2020. Rather shocking isn't it? Especially given that I have listened to far more enlightened research presented five to ten years prior. I hate that he is including commodities as types of Autism. Ridiculous.

Did he say if the seizures go away the autism goes away?

he said in some cases and very rare cases , he just wanted to say that in some cases autism may be a result of another disease and by treating that disease the autism goes away.

Perfect demonstration of Foucault's 'medicalisation of difference' and the dangerous othering of groups of humans who don't fit a narrow and bigoted concept of 'normal'. Sher asserts that at the time he became 'involved in autism' that he really didn't know that much about it. In common with many of his peers in the medical and research establishment, he has built much of his career and reputation on the assumption that autistic people are sick, a burden on carers and the state, and ultimately not quite human thus clearly demonstrating that it was very much in his interests to remain in that place of ignorance. I would strongly suggest that Sher make some attempt to free himself from his closed and narrow minded academic bubble and begin to engage with actually autistic people. This may be very helpful in setting his research in context and lead people like him to use the correct label for this type of high tech quackery, eugenics.
There is no such thing as 'autism' there are only autistic people and people are much, much more than the bundle of genes blinkered individuals like Sher would have us believe.
I am autistic, my children also. We have worth and we have a place in the human family. Educate yourself, have the humility to listen to different perceptions and perspectives and then ask yourself where you are taking humanity.

      Agreed.
The only comment here that isn't full of quackery, Nigerian prince cures autism scam, and hey have you thought of this one weird trick?
It's like saying "construction noise causes poor eyesight" and saying that corrective eyewear cured their child's poor eyesight. Even Lasik surgery won't change the genetic profile of the person and they will pass those genes on.
People deserve to be treated as humans. Autistic people / people with autism (however one prefers) deserve the same dignity and respect as anyone else. We wouldn't be using this technology to watch this video about research in fields that are likely full of neurodiverse individuals. It's normally not the people living ordinary lives, going out for beer and wings to watch the big game, innovating and changing the world. Likewise, even those who aren't Type 1 or Aspergers and need great deals of support can benefit their world immensely by just existing.

Alright alright. When did Steven say or even imply that we don’t deserve to be treated as people?
Their discussion was very matter of factly and could have benefited from extra discussion on how this benefits the welfare of autistic people.
However I don’t have a problem with the material of the conversation. If it came out that either one of them desired this knowledge in order to cure autism, then I would have a huge problem with this.
