Hey Mate. I'm from the States, and we have a device that takes that whole process out of the equation. I would really recommend giving them a checkout, as it's super easy if you're not looking to kill that specific fish. The company is called seaqualizer, and is a descending device that allows the fish to return back to the depth that you caught it at, allowing all of the gases from the pressure change to resume as normal. We use this all the time when we're wreck fishing and it's essential for us in the U.S., while trying to manage our fisheries to ensure fish for the future. Thanks, Luke.
@@lukegavigan5212 depending on the depth it might work in some cases (shallow waters or reeled in slowly). Most probably the majority of fish will die anyways, but at least you made your warden happy and complied to the laws
@@dante7228 Where are you from? The U.S. is one of the largest fish exporters worldwide but can maintain its population due to like-minded people caring about the environment. Also, buddy, it's just an observation. I'm talking about a product that ensures fish for the future, and as I can clearly see, you don't give a fuck. So have fun depleting the oceans around wherever you live because letting these fish go is one of the best parts about sustainable fishing. I know for a fact that Bro has not caught anything bigger than 100 pounds. 🤣, lol, we actually catch giant tuna in NY, so have fun seeing your 60-pound GTs; that's nothing compared to a 900-pound giant tuna.
@@lukegavigan5212 don't accuse me of not giving a shit, you don't know me at all. But releasing fish although they will most probably die anyways is pure nonsense for the sake of pleasing the lawmaker. Also I'm from Italy and unfortunately here the laws make even less sense than in the US. That said, I release a lot of small fish caught in the shallows where barotrauma isn't an issue. I also catch only what I need. But I wouldn't release a fish with a death sentence pending because someone is expecting me to.
Hey Matt, great video as always mate!! Loving the tips and filleting segments too. In terms of the barotrauma thing, I'll attach a video link at the end of this comment which is a real eye opener... From what I gather, the fish that blow up and pop their eyes/stomach out are fish where the swim bladder has expanded but doesn't actually rupture. The fish that come up looking seemingly okay can still suffer from barotrauma but their swim bladder actually ruptures and releases all the air on the way up. This means that even if they don't look blown-up, they could still die when released. Greg Lamprecht (Greg's Wicked Fishing) filmed this video showing a Nanny that looked perfectly fine, swimming back down to the bottom. He followed it with an underwater drone and it ended up making it to the bottom but then died anyway, very eye opening. It is a good lesson to anglers that maybe if you've got enough fish for a feed or bagged out, you should just leave the fish alone and that 'catch and release' in deeper water is most likely still going to kill the fish. It would be the exact same for Snapper and stuff down here in SEQ. Venting fish may also be less helpful than everyone thinks, who knows! Check out the first 10 mins of Greg's video to see what I'm talking about: th-cam.com/video/ejtPZzkWYNY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9bZu5-v4mOTFX-w6
Hey Matt the difference between the baro effected looking fish is that the ones which look normal have ruptured their swim bladder on the way up, rendering them basically guaranteed to die, even when they still look healthy they just drift to the bottom, can't equalise and end up dying from the injuries. The ones with popped eyes and lifted scales haven't ruptured yet but will not return to the bottom because they're still full of air. Venting them doesn't help as the damage has already been done unfortunately 👍👍
As I always say, no C&R unless it's to small and caught in the shallows. Fishing is fun but only for the fisherman, for the fish it's just pain and like at least 30% will die anyways according to some studies
@chrishopkinson8442 so does that mean the ones that get released with the weights on a rope to get them back down the bottom won't survive also? It was my understanding the ones that are blown up with be ok once they're put back in that same pressure down deep.
@@adammurphy7185they have a better chance of survival then just throwing them back but barotrauma can still cause permanent damage and death even if you return them to the original deapth
Check out Greg’s wicked fishing, he put an underwater drone in and followed a nani that he thought was ok down to the bottom, it kicked down fine but it still died. Won’t tell you much about barotrauma but it’s a really interesting watch.
@@PelagicPursuit89 yeah i was going to recommend this exact video as it shows how a seemingly healthy fish will still pass due to barotrauma related injuries. what i took away from it is not continue catching fish after your esky is full for the fun of it and releasing them as even the healthiest looking ones will still perish if your fishing 20+ meters of water. love the vids as always been watching you since the early days i think you had 1 or 2k subs when i found ya channel :) keep it up matty

Hey Matt, grab fish butchery book by Josh Nilan. It is a really good book to learn dry age fish and use all parts of the fish! And thank you for your content as always!
Any advice is good man. It doesn’t matter if you already know how to do something it’s always good seeing how someone else does it. Instead of the clamp try filleting on top of a tea towel, especially good with them slimy beautiful eating blueys. Keep the different techniques and information coming.
Cook the frame & head in a Pressure cooker for a couple of hours and you can feed it to your cat or dog. The y will love you for it. It turns the bone soft scales as well.
Creamy lemon and tomato fish with rice Cut cherry tomatoes in half put in pan with butter, garlic and cubed onion to go soft add one tub of cream Add the juice of two squished lemons Add salt, pepper and thyme to taste Half cooked fish under grill with garlic and butter, once fish is half cooked add to sauce to finish cooking Boil rice and add to bowl then put Fish and sauce on top
If you season (blend cilantro, garlic, lil ginger, hot sauce, salt and pepper) the snapper wings , then do a egg-wash and panko . Fry , then toss them in a sweet thai chili sauce .. 👌Tits!!!
