- Last time out we picked up an issue with the catalytic converters on my Porsche 996, so once again I’ve called the mechanic out. As ever I’m keeping the costs down so I’ve picked up some second-hand parts online, and I’ve got my fingers crossed we can get through this without finding yet another problem!

You should have gone to Carwow.... you could have saved thousands on a new Porsche :)
good joke but actually there are no Porsche dealers on Carwow lol, so matt couldnt actually get a good deal on a new Porsche.
Sounds great without the silencer 😳
Reflection Car Care Detailing ikr
Is the silencer same as a muffler?
I had my 997 4S mufflers completely deleted. The drone inside the cabin between 2000-4000rpm was just insane, ear bleeding. 10x worse then lets say similar modded Scooby WRX STI. The glove compartment lid vibrated like crazy, the AC controls etc. Never again.

But what does it sound like WITH the silencer?
I love seeing a TH-camr who is as tight as I am
Sgd TV Shouldn't be this tight with a classic 911...just get a new exhaust and cats... Or if used get the newest available... Think the 996 went to 2003.
you bought "cheap" 20 year old german premium sports car, repaired exhaust and refreshed suspension and people say bin it because its always broke? i think its in very good shape and all repairs till now are nothing! good luck matt, never sell it
People are idiots they'd rather pay 10k more for a car just so they can save themselves 3k in repairs.

Top man Matt. Nothing wrong with saving a few pennies mate.
That S14 in the background...
Great innit!
Looks more like ae111 levin
Nah, its the pre facelift Nissan S14 200SX
Keep the silencers off!! sounds godly
The creaking sound might be the “coffin arms”. They are the lower control arms. The ball joint on the bottom dries out. Some people cut a small slit in the ball joint rubber and spray in some silicone lubricant, then seal the rubber back up. However they are fairly inexpensive and easy to replace. I’d do it right and just replace them on both front sides. In the US they run about $70/ea. So that’s $140 if you do it yourself. Only about 1-2 of labor if you hire it out. No need for an alignment if you do it properly. Good luck and keep the Porsche.
Leave the silencer off! It sounds like a beast! Great video Mat!

"Paul has lubricated my bushings" LOOOOOOL
For the creaking noises... Get all your suspension/control arm and such relevant nuts and bolts torqued again. Once fitted they tend to settle and re torquing them can make a world of a difference. The only issue is to find the relevant torque specs
Matt buy exhaust cut out values.. Only costs about £100 get them welded before the silencers then you can stright pipe the car on demand and it costs alot less than a factory "sports exhaust"
Matt what you are spending is quite small compared to the depreciation on a new car, and once you get the worn parts fixed you get a lot of fun for the money. Shame you can’t get a G series for the same money any more. If you could do a G series v a 996 driving comparison it would be really helpful.
Cracking lad Paul, he done the gundo hack on my Porsche 997, probably the best £200 or so I spent on my car.
no silencers! This is obvious!
It sounds great without the silencers on. Absolute beast mode.
But I would keep them on if you are planning on doing a long journey. Droning at motorway speeds can be super exhausting on long trips

Project cars are so much fun!
Weld a bypass with valves before the silencers
Great vlog Matt! Please make more of those. Maybe a full review of your 996... And what about an E60 M5 as you mentioned it when you tested one? That would provide great material for many vlogs, repair, driving, repair, driving, repair, repair...
DeltaDubai03 it will be always parked instead of been driven
I luv the you say we. That poor chap is doing everything. Lol. Great video again. Jon...
Yes, run it without silencers.
I used to work in Research and Development in 2 of the leading performance exhaust manufacturers and with normally aspirated engines if you run the vehicle without a full length exhaust or increased the diameter of the bore by to much you actually loose some bhp. ( Turbocharged or supercharged engines not included in that statement) so you because of the management systems in the vehicle you’re better off fitting an aftermarket exhaust which will give you the same if not better acoustics and an increase of 5-15bhp on a normally aspirated Car ( realistic figures) plus keeps your vehicle street legal 😉especially in MK where you can get a defect form from the old bill for wearing a loud coloured shirt 👔. Scorpion do a fantastic exhaust for that motor ( I know I helped develop it) 😁
use dry powder type silicon sprays they help in extending the life of bushes. oil type ones generally reduce the life as they attract dirt, which ultimately cuts into the rubber bushes. better yet get silicon bushes ,they r the best.
run without a silencer for sure! and we are looking forward to seeing a video about getting complains from neighborhoods!
Bought 1000€ Mk2 mondeo 4 years ago. After 4 years and 49.000Km, all over europe, I can say, that other than oil and filter every 10K, I have only been required to change a lightbulb!
I'm more interested in the s14 in the background!
huge fan of the show
Without silencers!! 100%. Sounds so so so much better - like quite a beast actually
Good vid .... tough mixing porsche and being cheap is dangerous game ...
The sound is gorgeous
Keep it roaring
Awesome sound without the cats but prefer the more refined burble. Hope you get the other issues sorted 😉
Love the videos 👍🏻
Great videos man. You need some Aero. A lip, side skirts, and a gt3 style spoiler
Sod all that for a game of soldiers, I couldn't be done with all your problems Matt, good luck for the future mate.
Most entertaining car presenter! :) keep no silencers!
Without!! Blog is hilarious btw
Sounds better with no silencer, more vlogs on your Porsche!!!
Paul is real funny .. include him in CARWOW
Paul has lubricated my bushings :)
No silencers! Ever! That sounds really good.
I'm not sure if Matt is actually just your typical penny pincher, or if CarWow are just not paying him enough.
I see some Yokohama AD08R tires. Oh boy, are they good!
Sounds amazing without mufflers
As long as Mat doesn't run out of money, this series could go on forever... xD
Sounds epic without silencers
Mmmmm, that S14 Silvia. Don't see many of them around.
Yes
I like the idea of "Mechanics with Matt" , you should make it a real thing!
"Paul has lubricated my bushings". K den, Mat. Weird way to end a vlog :D
Sounds bloody fantastic without the silencers!!!! Would probably drone like a bear on the motorway tho.
Love your fix
big up for the cheapness, love it!!!
Great upload this...one of your finest - hilarious. Keep more coming like this, it’s a double act. 🤣
Love these videos
It does sound pretty good without the silencers, but you should pay attention to the vibrations caused by that. It will sound good but you're gonna say goodbye to the porsche confort.
Might be worth putting on the dyno again as those duff cats would kill power
You being able to run the car/drive it with a disconnected MAF sensor is a bad thing, usually means the sensor is dead. As far as i know, if you disconnect the maf sensor while the car is running, the engine will stop.
Good plan Matt
Run without, sounds like a beast
Time it went up the road Matt, and you got a three year old one, there are quite a lot coming on the market from lease deals.
Mechanics with mat !!
I think your exhaust needs some alignment. The left tip is hanging quite low compared to the right. Great show by the way. Makes me wanna buy a 996 too. :-)
Nice s14 in the back
Big fan Matt - When will we be seeing you on Extra Gear?
Hilarious Vid! Many THANKS!!! And 25 quid is no money :)))! Well worth spent on a 996. More vids please
Sounds epic without the silencer! But I still think it isn't a wise decision to actually do it. Just keep it in stock condition.
You got a Nice Porsche
'Mechanics with Mat.'
Yes! get on it, Car Wow 😂
NO SILENCER ALL THE WAY
Paul has lubricated my bushings...
OHLIN coilovers! Hell Yeah!
This is like hoovies garage 😂 broken again
Jeremy's voice: "not turning out to be very reliable this" :')
I bet Paul's neighbours love him - repairing cars on his drive every day.
Phil D it's his drive so what?
Prob not so bad for most of it but revving the nuts off a Porsche with no silencers is verging on childishness...
Personally I do not give a single f about my neighbours, simply because they don't give a single f about me. Mind your own business. You will feel healthier.
0:48 nice S14
yes
Straight pipes!
Next video, pefromance exhaust 😎
Can we get a review of the car in current form? I want to knowhow the Ohlins is treating you and stuff. Try lubing up your door jams a bit and see if the sound goes away.
Stop being so tight, always replace clamps if you have the chance, the stress of removal and then tightening again will mean they'll fail.
It's a Porsche. One apparently cost 25 pounds ($35).
That mechanic really needs to clear that litter up on the corner of his parking bay...
Bush problem ! Undo coffin arms , hit with silicone grease , lower car then tighten bolts .

Rob Johns yea thats wat i meant

junnutube yesss thankss
Straight pipes FTW
Cheaping our on parts costs far more long term, when you have to spend the labour again replacing the buggered bits you’ve fitted much, much sooner. Buy new bits Mat. Where the exhaust is concerned a new stainless system is absolutely worth the investment, unless you’re really just hoping to flip the car for the infamous Porsche anti depreciation factor. (Which isn’t really justified by their engineering, but it’s a thing.)
Ohhh that s14 thats across the street!! :3
This was so funny 😂😂😂 make more videos like this.
i had a loud creaking , not in a Porsche but all the same , turned out to be my lower ball joints were dry , being as the dont have grease nipples the only option was to replace them , all quiet now ...
Get some straight through pipes made up.save silencers for MOT that will save you money ! ;)
Why not just get new aftermarket exhaust?
but yeah definitely run without the silencers
Sure
Straight pipe!!
Keep the silencers on, without them the car is too loud and farty
So glad I don't have an old Porsche. Also sad I don't have any type of Porsche.
Yes please run it without the silencers. Do you still enjoy the car?
That thing sounds sickkkk
'' lubricated my bushes.... ''
haha I know what you meant Mat lol
I disagree with everyone saying for you to buy a new car.
People completely miss the point of car ownership. Yeah, a reliable car is good, but damn they're boring.
A car that needs your attention develops a personality and character. It becomes part of you and is an obsession. It'll make you incredibly happy whilst at the same time making you incredibly angry lol.
You guys obviously aren't car guys at all. New cars - all of them - are shit. There's not a single new car I'd buy, even if I had unlimited money.
I have 2 S14s, a Evo 6 and a Vauxhall Corsa with a 2.0 Turbo. And I have an old ford fiesta for my daily. Each of these cars have names
Philip, Joseph, Kevan, and Hailie.
They're beyond epic and I have fun with all of them. I've built my two Nissan's from ground up and my Corsa was built in 2003! I'll never part with them and I'll never buy a new car.
I admire your passion Matt, maybe others on here could learn about cars and what makes them great. Instead of buying cars they've been pushed into buying :)
Jamie's TH-cam Videos So if someone likes new cars they aren't a car enthusiast? What a terribly ignorant thing to say...
I think its just his audience since this is a buyers guide for new cars type of channel. Im mainly here to see the tech on new cars while liking older cars myself(since i like working on them)
...Point being most of the audience prolly buys new cars and dont deal with "old car" problems or do maintanence themselves(which is fine by me)
Scott Sherman
That's not what I said at all lol.
My point is that 'these types' of people who say get a new car, or old cars just cost money, no point, or say "just buy a new car"
As if all they think is new cars are best.
Calm down matey 😃 it's only an opinion lol
unjuseabble
Yeah that's fine by me too, its just frustrating when all I see if people buying new cars based entirely on other people's opinions.
"Aw, he said it's good, so it must be."
Haha!!
I too like new technology, I've actually integrated a lot of it into my builds.
It's great to see these extra videos showing you what hours into owning a older car.
And in my - not so humble opinion - I think everyone should own an older car. A mechanical car. One that requires your dedication and attention.
It'll make for some very memorable days.
Just don't be a sheep basically.
Jamie's TH-cam Videos I get where youre coming from definately tho im gona have to disagree on the note that everyone should own old cars, i.e my mom :D
And yeah old or new you never should rely on a single persons oppinion
Accurate representation of petrol head car ownership experience
Oh nice S body... 14? Not seen one in that colour before...
